Recovery, including physical therapy depends on how much work is done. He had several surgeries between August 2005 and November 2006. Recovery time is around 12 to 16 weeks. The scars are from pin sites but lightens up with cocoa butter.
Yes, it is to increase the length of a limb (or both, if you are a dwarf), but it is not recommended (nor covered by insurance) for cosmetic reasons (i.e., just because you want to be an inch or two taller). It's very painful and sites must be kept infection free or you will encounter complications. I had to disinfect and wrap every site where the metals rods (18 of them) penetrated through the skin into the bone. Nevertheless, my husband is one happy camper
Most people who go through this surgery have leg length discrepancies or deformities that need to be corrected to be able to have semi-normal mobility. Only a very small portion actually get this procedure done for cosmetic purposes.
