This is a song about the Mexican farm workers brought into this country by the government due to a labor shortage. They were being deported, or being sent home as another way of putting it. Actually Woody Guthrie wrote this more as the way the media treated the accident victims more then anything else. They never listed the names of the Mexicans that were killed, only the Americans. Worse yet, some were never identified. Dolly Parton does this song justice!
I'm a HUGE Dolly Parton fan; I'm also Mexican. When I first heard this song i wondered: i guess she likes mexicans and all cultures. That's why I love Dolly. She is my favorite singer of all time.
Johnny Rodrigues (solo) also does a great version of this song.
