  • i like this version a lot more then rostropovich's

  • How could you "dislike" this?

  • he plays great but his elbow comes too far up when he does some of those passages...however--great players never stay within confines of rules..and "properness"

  • It is great; but I prefer Rostropovich's version better.

  • ready to play this piece tomorrow for an audition!

  • how is it that there are dislikes in this video?? jealousy???? -___-

  • wow

  • "just" divine !

  • its a bit harder on the marimba i think

  • @robdrummcc Ya think? Lol I would think it is.

  • @numynut really...? this song is really easy, i sightread it for an exam and got A+...

  • @Gmail8589934591 Well, easy is relative. I'm working towards a Trinity College diploma on my cello at the moment and this is one of my pieces. There has to be a certain degree of difficulty for them to decide to put it on the syllabus at that level.

  • @numynut So how did it turn out?

  • @numynut dude im in 8th grade too and i have to play this for a scholarship. its not really that hard

  • @numynut Good. Music isn't about the difficulty level. It's never easy or you are doing it wrong. It's about what you put into it. A solo with one note has the potential to sound more appealing than one with one thousand notes. It's all about the emotion you convey with it and simpler pieces typically require more emotion.

  • @numynut stop lying

  • so fast O.o

  • Simply, the *best* Cellist---ever; *great sound and video* uploads; *Thank You* for posting with such respect between dances.

  • Awesome. He's all robot-like.

  • If I simply listened to this, I wouldn't have thought much of it, but watching this man perform it has enthralled me to the point of watching this over and over again.

  • @numynut its relt not all that hard, its just tha techniqu . im in 8th grade and masterd this

  • @faithrohde2 Post a video.....I agree there is a technique, one that takes years of practice to master. To say this is "not hard" is pretty arrogant, there are only a few people who can play this perfectly on a Cello.

  • @Stuntinplaya2 a friend of me had to play it today in school for a practise. and he was better than that guy :D

  • Mischa plays this so naturally and gorgeously, he's a real inspiration for us cellists. BRAVO!

  • @numynut same here, my teachers hate me cuz i have a "bad attitude" towards the class cuz the music is too easy

  • Bravo!!!!!!!!

  • @numynut how did it go? :P

  • I love the bit at the end.

  • I would just like to mention that everytime I see "X people are Jealous of Blablabla" or "X People are Justin Beiber fans" I thumbs down a video.

Quit doing it already. It's so fucking annoying.

    Also this piece is amazing.

  • @numynut dude, calm down, its easy. i sight-read this at a dinner gig when i was 13 -___-

  • @iliketoplaythecello That comment is over a year old. Way to fail at acting cool.

  • @RobtheElf LOL acting cool? well i wasnt acting, which means you think my cello skill is cool. well thankyou :)

  • @numynut wow, that is awesome (sarcasm)

  • The cello playing is phenomenal. The hair...sensational. But 5 dislikes...um who are those retards ?

  • @ashleingh 5 people are just jealous of his hair.

  • reminds me of little bear

  • I didn't know Bret from Flight of the Conchords played cello...

  • The most exciting thing (other then the music) in this video is watching his afro.

  • 1:41 AWESOME!

  • if jesus played cello, this is what he would look like

  • I really love the part between 0:01 and 3:09!!

  • @RODSKG lame...

  • @sir1920 HATER....!!

  • @therealist8364096 LOL!!! JK

  • Just remember, this guy sucked at cello when he started playing just like everybody else.

  • @NorrisChuckling In an interview he had, he is fairly comical and says he started playing cello late by Soviet standards (He was born in Latvia). He explains that he started playing the year he quit smoking... which was age 8 lol

Read the interview, you'll get a kick out of it. Google: "ICS Conversation with Mischa Maisky"

  • @numynut how did that all work out for you - I'm curious

  • plantilla

  • @TheSideflip play it really really slow. And then get faster and faster till you get to full speed. Do this for like 30 minutes every day you'll totally own your dick of a teacher.

  • Is he trying to look like Bach or sumthin? Anyway BRAVO!!

  • Excelente ejecucion y tecnica, amazing!!!

  • <3 his hair

  • Both his beard and his playing are top notch!

  • Never complain about music. :-) and ever ever to a teacher. lesson learn. how you did btw?

  • @numynut, practice for 8 hours a day and wow them dude

  • @mburch1974 practicing 8 hours a day doesn't guarantee success. doesn't hurt either though.

  • numynut how did the concert go?

  • have faith dude

  • this guy looks like the bob dylan/ brent hinds of cello. Awesome.

  • @numynut

That's funny, good luck man!!! I'm in 11th and i started this year, and Im moving my way up, I can play some of the suites, but not this one...

  • @99Mandalore Well I think this s dance I love cello and violin are you posting up songs this is very complicated but it sounds fun.

  • i so dig the fro!

  • his facial hair is as clean as his playing

  • @numynut Have fun....

  • @numynut when you cant do it in month you should give up cello at all;)

  • I would not be suprised to see Mr. Stallone in the audience, but he is decidedly Italian in appearance, and this genius and virtuoso, who now comes to approach Starker as he takes us through the breathing and heart rates of Bach and his astonishing movement after movement on these strings and excercises over the parallels, must be a Russian champion!

  • I notice this video only after performing it! Surprisingly I share one similar treatment of the notes. On the other hand, I feel exhausted in my right arm during practice and worry so much that I could not perform it.

  • this guy is a freaking mad man, he is the reason i want to want to learn cello

  • ok muy bueno

  • He looks like Mendeleev--Dimitriiiiiii and what not---

  • Arrrghh his dynamics are incredible.

  • i only can play the 1st and 2nd suits :(....

  • @bdbdbdbdbdbdbdbd8 i can only play the first suite XD don't feel bad :3 xD i play this on euphonium :3

  • This guy is awesome. I have to point something out though. He looks like Sylvester Stallone. Seriously, imaging him getting up from playing and then out comes the rocky voice!! Sorry, I had to say it. Bach is great and so is this guy :)

  • @miamidiver856 No he looks like The Zohan

  • Lol! Touche

  • The commenters here seem to be playing it as an exercise isn't the point of these pieces expression?

  • @MahSchoolworkMusic This is a fucking exercise. I played this and the bouree for state last year and i was fucking sweating!!!. BACH ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Yes, indeed, it was written as an exercise, but it is a lovely piece in its own right.

Hooray for Bach! I'm doing a different gigue right now (Suite 2). I love them.

  • i forgot to mention that i dont play cello i play clarinet so my lungs felt like they were going to explode every time i played those songs.

  • It's a workout on every instrument ^-^" whew, its exhausting on viola too. I'm doing it for State this year.

But I can't even imagine how difficult or painful this would be on clarinet though o.o

  • @Zapalta You're right about the workout on any instrument, I tried to play this on the triangle but gave up when i finally realised there were not enough sides and forget the vibrato it just didn't go :)

Maisky is absolutely brilliant on his chosen instrument though!!

  • playing this for nyssma.

    can't wait.

  • *Amazed* :)

  • I saw this and I no longer think my difficulties are great on the cello.

  • This is killer!!!

  • you're dumb.

  • jacob cole mitchell is dumb.

  • jacobcolemitchell is exactly right. Why so many thumbs down?

  • i think youre really lying jacob. why dont you post a video of youre playing? i would like to hear. considering it took me 3 years to master the 1st suite.

  • He creates 2 prominent figures and makes them speak between(among) if with the instrument,

    Wonderful

  • Eric Siblin said he could hear what he described as a metal guitar solo in this piece.

Now I can see exactly what he's talking about.

  • It's Boland!

  • AWSOME HAAAIIIIIRRRR!!!!!!!!! <3

  • Bravo!

  • His skill is incredible. His playing is amazing. But the most important thing is the passion it takes to do the things he does.

  • @Manny1222 dude,i got the passion it takes, trust me.Can you lend me his talent and skill?:D

  • @Punisheryo More practice. xD

  • @Punisheryo

Talent is oversestimated. From my experience, it's something like:

    talent 30%

    practice 70%

Point being, somebody with talent who doesn't practice many hours every day is gonna be worse than a no-talent guy who has the patience to practice correctly.

  • @The13reeze Thats common sense to me also mate,i was just being sarcastic.Practice is always the way to go.. :)

  • @The13reeze for me it's like practice 10% luck 30% talent 60% and im a cellist im not dissagreeing your right but im bad at remembering to practice XD

  • @Manny1222 Not to mention that hair... oh, what glorious hair

  • @MelodolicMusic don't you love how he shakes them following the tempo? Hahaha! Every single hair of this man is pure music!

  • dayum!!!!!!!

  • he's got penggg hair

  • 2:46

    Omfg.

  • lol i thought i did it pretty well... im looking into styles of how to play it and now im wondering if i should wait till im older... ha

at about 1:50 i die when u push the double stops into opposite string crossings its so WIERDDDD

  • love his cello

  • Definitely a great performance and piece. If I tried playing it, though, you would probably want to scrape your nails on a chackboard to cover it with a more soothing sound. This guy, though, makes it look so easy. And you have to admit, he does kind of look like a dwarf.

  • This is amazing...so beautiful...I've just begun Suite 3 and this guy has just blown me away. Now I doubt that I can do it, lol, I will never be able to match this amazing quality and high standard. Very beautiful. Hats off to you, sir/

  • His bowings are HARD... and he makes them look effortless. This guy was in a labour camp for a year as well.. must give you the drive to succeed more than anything.

  • 'This guy was in a labour camp for a year as well'

    how did that happen?

  • Only years and years of hard practice brought this guy to this. Astoundingly beautiful.

  • algun dia me gustaria tocar como él es genial, todo lleva continuidad :)

    una de mis piezas favoritassss

  • kewl hair xD

  • 55-1.05 Finding that technique so fucking hard to master. probably my favourite piece by Bach :)

  • wow. he makes seem so.. easy. well bach was a genious and he had an outstanding view on music, outsanding or profound seem like under statments though

  • best gigue ever!!!

  • I've been working on this piece for 2 weeks, and after hearing this, mine pales in comparison to this.

  • 0:25 to around 0:30, probably my favorite part of the song. It just jumps out at me and almost screams, VIVA!

  • again, i just LOVE the way misha plays bach...

    ur the best!

  • Weeeeeee! This is fun! I like this song and the way he plays! XD

  • Mischa makes this an incredibly compelling piece. I only wish I could get this suite up to sounding something close to this. There's just something about this interpretation that I like a lot. I have a lot of respect for Mischa Maisky's playing (as well as the 'fro). Great video.

  • ALL ABOUT THE JUFRO xD

  • brilliant. thanks for posting.

  • I'm playing this for a solo in two months!!

This is a beautiful piece but it is a dance, and I think that here he takes too fast.

  • Gigue is the fastest dance in whole suite. It's normal to play it like this.

  • iuno thats the tempo i take it at. the jigs are meant to be fast tho

  • Amazing! Bravo! TY.

  • i learned this a few months ago. i think its amazing!!!! :D

i love it and i love his expression. its amazing. =]

  • Brilliant!

  • Amazing! Bravo!

  • Beautiful!

Maisky is such an amazing cellist!

About what grade would you say this is anyone?

I don't know how my teacher expects me to learn it =0

  • i would say grade 4 to 5 but thats my opinion. im14 and haven't been playing for long, but yea.

  • Excuse me? I'm working on all the Bach suites and I can't even play Suite no. 3 prelude right!!! I play in one of the best 7th grade orchestras in the USA. We play high school music. If I could play this I would be a prodigy. This is Bach. If you say its grade 4 or 5 then post a video of you playing it since your 14. A 6th grader can't even play Suite no. 1 unless they've been working on it for at least a year.

  • i didn't mean it offensively. sure ill post this piece and the prelude very soon. ive only been playing for 2 and a half years

  • Stop, please. ;)

  • wow

    don't even talk

  • this is as good as it gets!!

  • haha... grade 4 or 5??? it's about diploma level :D i hope to get that good!(not as good as maisky... diploma)

  • Who the hell said this was grade 4 or 5!? Still, it's not dimploma level. I'd say the high end of grade 8. Its the piece ive been working on lately and I'm probably just about grade 8 standard.

  • any 4 movements of a bach suite can be played for an Amus recital. then again that's the new sylabus of AMEB and i live in australia :)

  • I would say at least 8th grade if not higher but even then your going to be working on it for a while.

  • You are my hero!!!!!1 i want to learn this so bad but now i think i'll just disgrace but i'll at least try :)

  • Never give up!! =D Go go go!

  • Wow. This is amazing!

  • simply great!

  • q chido

magnifico me encanta como toca este tipo

  • just beautiful

  • goshh..

    i play cello..

    the tone is like stunning..

i want to know how to get it:/

and yes, string crossings ar definately flawless..

he doesnt ever hit any other strings by mistake..

    stunning.x

  • there I was, thinking about how Maisky is too technical a musician for my tastes... Then he had to go and play this!

  • so..apparently there ARE things in this world that are perfect...

  • his string crossings are flawless.. dayum

  • WOW! I'm stunned.Beautiful...

  • fantastic!

  • intense but exquisite.

  • Amazing Bow control!!

  • Does anyone know if he is playing out of a certain edition or if this is his own?

  • The best interpretation of Gigue No. 3 I've heard is by Yo-Yo Ma, you might want to check that out, but Maisky is definitely a better show.

And he has nothing to envy any other cello player.

  • does anyone know what cello does Mischa Maisky plays on?

    Thanks

  • he plays a Montagnana

  • The best interpretation of Gigue No.3

  • As far as youtube videos go, I prefer the one of Starker.

  • Excellent recording :Very good compression

The best i found on Youtube.Thks

  • bach is god
