Thanks for posting. Was sorry to hear that the zoom on theTamron 28-75 2.8 was a bit stiff. Was hoping to do some smooth zooms during filming. Not sure if I'm going to buy now.
I have this lens and I was wondering if it was alright to turn the focus ring while it was in AF mode. I was wondering because I'm able to turn it but it gives resistance and I was wondering if it will damage the motor if I do this.
I'm planning to upgrade from a 1000D and the kit lenses to a 60D and stay there a while. Is this the lens I should get? Please note that I'm on a budget and I'd like a long-lasting all-around lens with good quality.
Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 is slow on Canon mount, but not slow for Sony or Nikon. I think you have the Di series. Anyways, I think they have another which is faster than this one.
I have this lens and I'm happy with it . One advice is that, be wary of inconsistent quality control. Test the hell out of it if you decide to buy one. My copy is soft at 2.8. I also notice a little bit of front focusing. If you can get a good copy, this lens is absolutely fantastic for the price. If not then I'd save refund it to get some nice primes instead.
Continued: What I wonder is why so many even compare lens that run in the range of 1500. to 6K with those such as this one that run under 400 much of the time. Does anyone really think you're going to find a better lens at 1/2 or less the price of a Nikon or Canon, Mamiya or Hasselback. Come on guys, that would be great, but it isn't going to happen, not now not ever! So shot with what you can afford and upgrade when you can afford it. Remember what your shooting with and make it work for you!
Well done review. Like that you mention another review you differ with. We don't hear this enough. It is why we watch these videos, either for input while we consider a new lens or input what we may be missing in a lens we already have or haven't used in a way it may be better suited for. That said, I'm sick of unboxing and reviews that make me read typed crap that is for the most part meaningless. So thanks, for taking the time to give us your opinion. Continued:
I have a friend (professional photographer) who is selling a Tamron 28-75mm 2.8f for $65. Is this a good price for a gently used lens? Could I get any good use from this?
I was wondering, any experience with the Elisa award winner Tamron 17-50mm SP F/2.8 XR Di II with no VC. The pics I have seen on the internet, the Tamron 28-75 had sharper images? Thanks.
someone offered me this lens for $300 but I did not know much about it and I passed on it. However I am looking for inexpensive lens for low light portraits at events etc, and I am between this 28-75 2.8 and Nikkor 85mm 1.8 AFD. What concerns me about this 28-75 is the slow autofocus in case people are dancing or moving. I have Nikkor 50mm AFD 1.8 but it is too short for portraits on full-frame (my wife mentions that people's faces are still distorted).
Hey I see u are familiar with Dom Bower's reviews too - check his one on this lens out again 'coz his lens seems to autofocus way faster than the one you have. Weird !?
@kiwibiwi there are two versions of this lens...one with the screw drive autofocus and one with the lens motor....i have the lens motor version, but the screw drive is supposed to be much quicker....i think he might have that version...could be wrong though....i hope not! lol
@BustedShutter Dom Bower was outside in the sun for his review on this lens. My tamron will autofocus extremely fast in good lighting, but for indoor and low light shots it will search around a long time.

@kiwibiwi I noticed that too, im not sure whether theres two versions of this lens but mine is much faster at focusing on my Canon 50D. not as fast as the canon USM but pretty close.

Quick question for you. I just picked up this lens and the image quality seems amazing thus far. One thing I noticed though is that when i change the aperture it makes a rather audible clicking noise that is a fair bit louder and sort of metallic sounding compared to my prior kit lens. I was simply curious if this was normal or if I needed to look into it. Thanks!

This review was very helpful. Question - I got asked to do a friends wedding with my Canon XTi, and all I have the basic lens that came with it. I"m looking for a new one that isn't going to hurt my pocket book to bad and that is on the more user friendly side. Any suggestions?
i would say that it depends on your sensor size...if you're shooting a DX camera like the D90 or D300, then I would go with the 17-50..it will give you a nice wide angle as well as short telephoto..it would make a great all around lens...if you have a full frame camera, then go with with the 28-75 for the same reasons
Nice review. :) The only thing I personally really don't like about this lens is the AF. However, have you heared about the new Tamron 70-300 with VC and USD? USD is the same as Nikon's VR, so there is a chance they will come with a 28-75 f/2.8 VC USD in the nearby future!
@krilynck i did see that actually...looks interesting! Tamron has a version of the 28-75 without an internal motor that relies on the screwdrive autofocus of the camera body....ive been told that this lens is better than the one i have, but they can be tough to find since they dont make them anymore i dont think..
@BustedShutter Nope... All Nikon versions are with a built in motor now. You can check it though, because different model numbers are used:
"These (with built in motor) Tamron lenses in Nikon mount can be identified by the model number, which includes the Roman numeral two after the "N" (e.g., B003NII-700)."
But I actually wonder where that model number can be seen. It's not on the lens itself, is it?
hey, great review, best video review i've seen. also great pictures i checked out your web site real nice stuff. can you send me the link to your 28-75 photos you took? couldnt find them thanks
Unfortunately I don't have a specific gallery with sample shots, but if you check my website, a couple of my recent posts are all taken with this lens. The D700 ISO post and the most recent portrait session. All were taken with this lens except the first pic in the portrait post. Hope this helps.
Is it sharp enough for landscapes at 28mm?

2:56 Dom said its a very good alternative than Nikon/Canon for portrait photography.

if,like what u just said, u used the lens 80% of the time, then, the focal lenght is by any means not awkward at all.
