They have to sue teh previous owner each step of the way clear back to the pawn shop that took bought it for $100....it's worth $12,000. Paul McCartney has one and so does Chris Squire.

The police dont give a SHIT about your stolen goods, for the most part they exist to bring in money for the government.

I read a nice article about a pawn shop, in Philly, some couple pawned 100 laptops that were stolen from the Philadelphia School District. The woman was a heroin addict, and the store never questioned her about the lap tops. She was a teacher. The place is still open.

every item the Pawn Stars sells must go pass the Las Vegas Crime Lab (CSI) and the DHS before it is sold if something is stolen it will show up on the computer and all rick has to do is grab the phone and CSI and the DHS comes running. Rick accepts stolen items but doesn't report them. I had a friend who would sell 50 thousand dollar stolen watches to rick afte rhours for around 5 grand, no questions asked.
I can understand if the police list shows an item, say a flat screen tv with serial number, on Monday. And they buy it on Tuesday. That would be buying stolen property. But, if they are not provided with a list of stolen property, then how can anyone take what they have purchased clean as an innocent third party with out compensation? I'm hoping that a company will fight this in court and get the laws changed.

If they don't do any market research for their items before selling it to a pawnshop, they deserve being "ripped off". The point of a pawnshop is to get rid of your goods because you don't want to go to the trouble of finding customers and doing your own market research. They are providing a service. If they really wanted to, I'd bet they could bring that number down to something like once or twice, A YEAR. It's only a matter of asking the sellers to show a reciept or other proof of purchase. But they choose not to and then it's hard not interpret it as they implicitly accepts to buy stolen goods.

I can understand if the police list shows an item, say a flat screen tv with serial number, on Monday. And they buy it on Tuesday. That would be buying stolen property. But, if they are not provided with a list of stolen property, then how can anyone take what they have purchased clean as an innocent third party with out compensation? I'm hoping that a company will fight this in court and get the laws changed.

If they don't do any market research for their items before selling it to a pawnshop, they deserve being "ripped off". The point of a pawnshop is to get rid of your goods because you don't want to go to the trouble of finding customers and doing your own market research. They are providing a service. They didn't run into your homes and just snatch up what they wanted. You brought your stuff to them. To call them "thieves" is just silly and childish.

if they buy it thinking ...hmmm this may be stolen .... they just somehow fail to log it into their computer and sell it later to someone else.
pawn brokers are legal thieves as they are.... they hope that your life turns to crap and you have to sell your stuff to them for 10 percent of it's actual value.
they make their living on the misery of others.

it's the same as kicking someone when they are down. pawnbrokers kick them in their teeth and take them for all they have.

The only real difference is that a pawn shop lends smaller amounts of money for collateral that you give ahead of time.

Why do you think the police check at places like this? Because it's rather easy to sell to a pawn shop if the items are not locally stolen and a place like Vegas....well there's lots of items from all over America showing up.
These 'upstanding' business owners have made untold dollars off of stolen goods and they only do the least amount of efforts required by law.

@breakneck14 Excactly. In the segment Rick says that once or twice a month, something they bought turns out to be stolen. If they really wanted to, I'd bet they could bring that number down to something like once or twice, A YEAR. It's only a matter of asking the sellers to show a reciept or other proof of purchase. But they choose not to and then it's hard not interpret it as they implicitly accepts to buy stolen goods.
