hey scotty ,i have a 2003 chevy suburban 1500 5.3 i love this truck runs great i have a mysterious belt squeak/chirp have tried everything changed..tensioner pulleys, belts, crankshaft pulley, removed ac pulley to single out the chirp noise... was not the ac belt or the tensioner pulley i've come to the conclusion that it may be my power steering pump or pulley the reason i came to this conclusion was ..2 years ago the power steering pump went out i had it replaced all of a sudden this chirp came
Hello Scotty, My mothers 2006 Nissan X-Trail is making some sort of squealing noise near the alternator. I am not sure if the belt needs lubrication or the alternator bearing is worn out. You're advice would me much appreciated. Thank-You.
Nice sounds off the bike, i think yestarday we did even better with mitsubishi canter diesel engine running with engine oil. :D We changed the whole engine but left original cooler full of oil. Well, it sounded prity amazing. Probably 10 000 rpm.
My moms SUV makes a really loud squealing noise when you start it up and it goes away after about a minute or 2. Do you have any idea what could be causing the noise and how to make it stop?
Hello Scotty, I just replaced the drive belt in my 2002 Toyota Camry about 2 months ago, and today I noticed my car making a brief belt chirp noise when turning the wheel. I was wondering why it would make the noise? The car was cold and I just had the oil change today, will these things cause noisy belts? Thanks.
@PeterGriffin4200 cold can do that, but so can a weak automatic tensioner. Yours is probably a little weak, but they are expensive to replace if it only makes it first thing many guys live with it.
this must be a common fault because i came across this exact same problem on a BMW the same as this about a month ago and that's how i fixed the problem because of the price of a compressor your talkin 400 bucks

@scottykilmer It is worth mentioning that in interference engines you don't want to run the engine with the timing belt off or you'll mash up your valves. Other belts are fine to run the engine without.
@scottykilmer Hello, Scotty thank you for your informative videos that help the average person take care of one of their greatest investments, their car. I had a question, I am having an electrical issue with my car, its over 5 1/2 yrs old and the other day it would not start, heard a machine gun noise from starter, took battery to autozone, recharged it, (read 631 amps) got back home, car started fine, next morning, machine gun sound, is their any way to rule out problems before buying parts?
@SSSDiaz7 first, go back to auto zone and have them check the battery on their machine, and the alternator too, they do that free. Replace any that are bad. But if they are good, you have a short. so watch my video "fixing electrical shorts on your car" and do that.
@SSSDiaz7 might be the alternator or like in my case the connection between my alternator and battery was loose u can check for that, also u can get a free test for your starter battery and alternator at autozone, i hope it helps
@rebirthatthefountain actually I went through a trial and test to rule out the 4 main issues being the starter, battery, electrical short, or alternator. On 2 occasions I brought the battery to autozone, they tested it, it was weak, so they recharged it, gave it back, car started right after, but failed to start the next morning on a cold start. So the second time around we disconnected the charged battery thiking it might be a short that was robbing all the juice of the battery cont...
@rebirthatthefountain and it wasn't as we connected the battery on the 3rd morning and it failed again. Took the battery in to advanced auto parts and on the 3rd test they determined it was a faulty cell, well finaly something definitive. Well $92 later for a new battery and everything is great.
Sorry for going off topic here. Hey Scotty, I believe I m in need of a replacement connector that leads to my AIT sensor. I ve Googled it to find a seller of this without luck. Any suggestions of any specialty retailer sites which might carry it ? It's for a '97 Infiniti I30 base model.
I did a video response, not sure where it is. Scotty my 97 Cadillac Catera makes a loud whining noise when I first start it up. The sound comes from the front of the engine, in the pulley area.
The car still seems to run good, just a God awful noise. It does quiet down after the car warms up. Thanks.
@scottykilmer oh... a little background info. The first morning the car wouldn't start the lights in the dash were ok and the headlights too. It just wouldn't crank, so I got a jump and it started fine. I left the car on for 5 minutes so the alternator can charge a bit and turned off car. A few minutes later turned car on without assist fine. Next morning machine gun noise from starter again. When I did bring back battery from autozone charged up it stared up fine, but 8 hours later, same noise.
@scottykilmer hey man liking your vids.. My car makes a weird noise.. it's coming from the valve cover. I have a video of it in my channel. It would be much appreciated to hear from you :)
Great, this video shows how important it really is to self-diagnose stuff before getting to work.
Mechanics always tell their customers to rush in as soon as they notice anything, just so they can charge them for an additional "diagnose fee" or whatever. Usually, with noises, they aren't as bad as they sound from my experience. I've been in a car where it sounded like the whole rear axle was gonna fall off when it was just the exhaust rubbing against the gastank plate!

scotty my ford ranger when i first start it in cold mornings it squeaks for about 30 seconds then it goes away... Does that just mean that the engine is cold or do i have a loose belt?
@scottykilmer hey scotty i one day want to make my air conditioner work in my 91 chevy beretta 3.1 gt and i thank its leaking in the dash the evaperator core do i remove the whole dash how do i change that out for a new one
hey scotty, how much does it cost a brand new Torque wrench there in the states ?! there is one ive gotten here from ACE with a 46 $ , i feel kinda disappointed, it is expensive !! :-( .
Hey Scotty, I took off the serpentine belt of my car to find what seemed like a bad bearing coming from the water pump. I spun al the pulleys and the water pump was different as when I spinned it it would keep spinning for a long time. Is this normal.I have uploaded a video on what I am referring. I would appreciate the help! Thanks for the awesome videos...
@chocolatao214 that car has sensors all over the place, often 4 different ones. They all bolt on the exhaust system and have wires coming out, easy to see once jacked up. Scotty
Scotty, I have a 2004 Impala 3.4 that has that alleged "Piston Slap" when the car is being started in the cold or in the morning and then goes away when it warms up. Since It's a pushrod engine, do you believe that the noise is simply oil going into the pushrods, to the rocker arms, and then the valve train? Correct me if I'm wrong also i performed an oil flush on it no too long ago with a new oil change.
"Every car has a control on the dash that helps fix most engine or chassis noises, its called the stereo volume knob adjust as needed,I find AC/DC covers up rattles good, Van Halens good for brake squeels, and Zepplins good for covering up exhaust noises, Steppenwolf is good for any other noises. If the volume doesnt successfully cover up the noises you may need a louder stereo." Redneck 350 dollar Beater car repair manual
Scotty, my water pump is driven by my timing belt. Should I take my timing belt off and start it to check my water pump? -Signed: Devil's Advocate }:-)
@TheJazzocaster I had the same issue with a whining noise in my car, but it was the same fix as yours, I dumped my ever complaining girl friend and the noise stopped!
@xxlkrustylxx normally you don't need to flush engine oil. But if it's really gunky, use a flush made for it like K&W flush and follow the directions on the can, then change the oil and filter, that's fine. scotty
@Atypoc often worn hydraulic lifters inside the engine. Try flushing the engine oil with flush treatment, then change the oil and filter after that. Scotty
How about a scratching noise on startup scotty? I just got a new starter installed. Any consequences if not addressed? It's been 3 days since it started (both car and noise).
@nightpwner well, depends on the car. If it's an old GM, they have to be shimmed correctly or they will do that. But most cars just bolt the starters on with no shims these days. In that case, get another. Scotty
Hey scotty! If we took a video of your problem, how can we submit it to you for review?
I have this odd noise that i can conclude is definitely coming from somewhere in the belt area. The noise is louder on a cold start and as the engine warms up it's not as loud but it's still there. It's an 01 Volvo S60 with 149K miles, everything works, I'd just like to know what's causing the sound.
My truck is 14 years old, all of the rubber bushings (I think that' what they are called) are squeaking. Does spraying them with dish soap and water really stop the squeaking? Replacing them is not in the budget. Thanks in advance!
hey scotty my boyfriends got water in his gas tank, we took it in and the mechanic said to use methyl hydrate we have used at least 4 bottles of it and the truck still looses power while driving. Do you have any other ideas on what it might be? we also replaced the spark plugs and fuel pressure is fine thanks scotty you rock!
Regarding the intro/exit volume, you have to offer to be his personal video editor and do the work for him. He gave a similar response when someone complained about his 'outdated looking' web site.
Good info, but should have a disclaimer about not putting your head too close to the moving parts of the engine. Someone with long hair can get it tangled in a belt and get scalped before they can say, "Where did my f 'in hair go?" lol
lol my ac compressor went bad in my car not too long ago. It seized up after 5 minutes when I started it up. I went inside, came back out and there was smoke in my car from the belt going around the compressor that wouldn't move. I was like "AHHHHHHH". Was a sad day. :(
@Vycatocom Yeah, that's a good one. Actually it don't have to be a screwdriver - pretty much anything solid will do. When i first saw that trick, the guy that was doing it used some wooden stick. That was funny, but it works, so i don't care.
@hp11208 you don't need to do that in this vehicle, the comp has it's own belt. BUT, in a system that has only one belt, yes, that's a good idea. Scotty
AC is not completely useless in the winter, there is a stage in the air conditioning cycle that pulls moisture from the air, which is sometimes the only way to get visibility through the windows, this would be more prevalent in areas of high humidity such as where I am.
The owner of this vehicle is a fucking idiot. He's probably going to wait until it's hot out to get his A/C compressor replaced and prices of the service will go up.
You sure deal a lot with cheap people. The owner of this SUV doesn't want to replace the compressor. It can cost $250 but in Texas you still want a/c in the winter. I'll stop now. :-) Great Vids.
@narox Yep. Just won't have power steering, the car will not be able to cool down, you won't have air conditioning, and your alternator won't charge the battery.
why wouldnt it start without a belt on it? its not like the starter is belt driven. its bolted on the back of the motor, and engages via the flywheel.
ha ha ive done that on my 02 f150.......the compressor locked up so i got a shorter belt from the auto parts store and bypassed that bugger....problem solved
@CorsaAGSi Ive asked him before and he's stuck in his ways... the mustang was the big change... but still a change of music or just a nice burn out or engine rev would be nice
@scottykilmer Long time viewer and have asked you for info numbers of times... witch you have always been bang on the money with the information you provide to solve my problems. I enjoy watching every video and plan on doing so as long as you continue to upload them. But you have to understand that watching all those videos you hear the same start and ending witch I usually skip as I've heard 100's of times. Please for the viewers change the music atleast!
@tinderinc hey, buy me the rights to some good music and send it to me. Doubt that will happen though. People like stuff for free and when money is needed, they are nowhere to be found. But if you are serious, I'll definitely listen to any music you send with paperwork saying you have the rights to use it on youtube. I have an open mind. Scotty

Scotty, my vehicle has 40,000 miles on it, is a total tune up and transmission drain and new fluid okay to do at 50,000 miles?

Scotty, I have a 2004 Impala 3.4 that has that alleged "Piston Slap" when the car is being started in the cold or in the morning and then goes away when it warms up. Since It's a pushrod engine, do you believe that the noise is simply oil going into the pushrods, to the rocker arms, and then the valve train? Correct me if I'm wrong also i performed an oil flush on it no too long ago with a new oil change.
carntruckfreak4life 3 months ago
"Every car has a control on the dash that helps fix most engine or chassis noises, its called the stereo volume knob adjust as needed,I find AC/DC covers up rattles good, Van Halens good for brake squeels, and Zepplins good for covering up exhaust noises, Steppenwolf is good for any other noises. If the volume doesnt successfully cover up the noises you may need a louder stereo." Redneck 350 dollar Beater car repair manual

Scotty:
Why is there so many negative comments about engine oil flushes not being safe for your engine.?
I have a 2004 Mtisubishi Lancer 2.4L with 23000 miles on it and i'm not sure if i should do it. Please help me.
xxlkrustylxx 3 months ago
@xxlkrustylxx normally you don't need to flush engine oil. But if it's really gunky, use a flush made for it like K&W flush and follow the directions on the can, then change the oil and filter, that's fine. scotty

Hi scotty!
My car's engine is clicking while warming up, once it becomes warm that clicking noise disappears... can you help me solving this problem?
you're the coolest and the best
sorry for my poor english, i'm from russia :)
Atypoc 3 months ago
@Atypoc often worn hydraulic lifters inside the engine. Try flushing the engine oil with flush treatment, then change the oil and filter after that. Scotty

@scottykilmer thanks a lot!!!! i'll do it as soon as i can....

How about a scratching noise on startup scotty? I just got a new starter installed. Any consequences if not addressed? It's been 3 days since it started (both car and noise).
nightpwner 3 months ago
@nightpwner scratching is often the starter being bad scraping on the flywheel. Scotty
scottykilmer 3 months ago
@scottykilmer So should I let it pass of get a new starter?
nightpwner 3 months ago
@nightpwner well, depends on the car. If it's an old GM, they have to be shimmed correctly or they will do that. But most cars just bolt the starters on with no shims these days. In that case, get another. Scotty

@scottykilmer Its a 2000 Mazda 626, are you saying they gave me a bad starter? I wonder if I can get it replaced.

MidlifeCrises 3 months ago
@MidlifeCrises Na, spray them with WD 40, that actually works for a while. Scotty
scottykilmer 3 months ago
@scottykilmer - Oh, what a great idea! Thank you, I'll spray them this weekend. Have a nice Thanksgiving...

hey scotty my boyfriends got water in his gas tank, we took it in and the mechanic said to use methyl hydrate we have used at least 4 bottles of it and the truck still looses power while driving. Do you have any other ideas on what it might be? we also replaced the spark plugs and fuel pressure is fine thanks scotty you rock!
OMGshinyobject 3 months ago
@OMGshinyobject replace the fuel filter and fill the tank up with high test gas, that may help. Scotty

Nice trick with the screwdriver.
Vycatocom 3 months ago
@Vycatocom Yeah, that's a good one. Actually it don't have to be a screwdriver - pretty much anything solid will do. When i first saw that trick, the guy that was doing it used some wooden stick. That was funny, but it works, so i don't care.
ddd9022 3 months ago
Nice man,or you can buy a pulley with the bracket and remove the ac compressor.
hp11208 3 months ago

AC is not completely useless in the winter, there is a stage in the air conditioning cycle that pulls moisture from the air, which is sometimes the only way to get visibility through the windows, this would be more prevalent in areas of high humidity such as where I am.
BlackonWhiteChevy 3 months ago
The owner of this vehicle is a fucking idiot. He's probably going to wait until it's hot out to get his A/C compressor replaced and prices of the service will go up.
7477238 3 months ago
You sure deal a lot with cheap people. The owner of this SUV doesn't want to replace the compressor. It can cost $250 but in Texas you still want a/c in the winter. I'll stop now. :-) Great Vids.
nygiantswinner 3 months ago
@nygiantswinner a LOT more than 250 , a new compressor is over 500 bucks alone for oem. Scotty

narox 3 months ago 10
@narox just don't run it for too long or else your battery will drain..and you'll have no power steering
Intelpentium54321 3 months ago
@narox Yep. Just won't have power steering, the car will not be able to cool down, you won't have air conditioning, and your alternator won't charge the battery.
Whit3Mike 3 months ago
@narox you can start it but you won't have power steering, a/c, battery power for too long, and your engine will quickly overheat
logyscott 3 months ago
@narox
why wouldnt it start without a belt on it? its not like the starter is belt driven. its bolted on the back of the motor, and engages via the flywheel.

@tinderinc hey, buy me the rights to some good music and send it to me. Doubt that will happen though. People like stuff for free and when money is needed, they are nowhere to be found.
