  • I usually like the way hair salons do my hair, im easily please lol, me and my mom just don't like the price, my mom wants to try this i will have to try it on her

  • I totally agree. At salons they never really come out the way I want them too.

  • Hi! Saw your videos and tried the foils - worked very well! I used to use the cap that came with the hair hi-lighting kits but that was a disaster, since my hair is very super thick. Thanks very much for your help!

  • Hi tips for you- I tried this and it worked pretty good, excpet the highlights came out a little too yellowish as opposed to whitish blond--- what do you suggest?

  • Hi, you may need to leave the product on a bit longer next time. You can redo the yellowish ones if you want, but you'll only need to leave it on for a very short time to bring it up a bit more. Be sure you check every five minutes as it will come up quickly once your hair has already been highlighted.

  • cant u jsut use a pencil XD?

  • I LOVE it! you have the same hair color as me!

  • Thank you! I have been "painting" my highlights for years, sometimes good, sometimes not so good results.

I also have been using Natura hair color because it is not tested on animals. But I want to try foils, and now I know how!

  • Camera guy was going crazy at

  • Camera giu w

  • I was wondering if you only highlight the amount of hair shown in all these videos. Do you normally highlight more strands and did you do less for the video? Do you normally do a very long strand or simply the roots? Thanks!!

  • Hi, I highlight small chunks around my face and a few towards the back. I only do the surface hair; I really don't go into my underneath hair. I only do the roots if the rest of the strand is already highlighted prior. If I'm selecting a strand that was never highlighted, then I will do the entire strand.

  • The developers come in 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50! Also, buying the foils are such a waste of money!! You can use regular foil and cut them the right size! Cheaper and thats what salons use!

  • Hello, i am dying my friends hair this weekend , i think i am going to use what you said in this video , she had thick mouse/ash blonde hair but were looking to highlighter for more blonde color , i was wondering if you could tell me can this be damaging to her hair she had never had an dye/bleach on here hair before , thankyou :)

  • Hi, highlighting your hair can be damaging to the hair in that it breaks down the hair's cuticle leaving it porous and vulnerable to dryness which can cause breakage. I recommend following the directions carefully as well as conditioning your hair after every shampoo to help replace lost moisture and prevent damage. Many people highlight their hair and I have for years. You can still have healthy-looking hair if you take proper care of it. Be sure not to overprocess it.

  • hey! great job on the video! can you tell me what bleach you use?

  • I'm using Clairol Kaleidocolors in Blue or Azul.

  • @YouTips4U how long will its take to take out the foil???

  • Hi, if this is your first time, you'll want to check the foil every 15 minutes or so. Everyone's hair lifts differently, so until you know how long it takes your hair to lift, you have to check it periodically.

  • Actually I would do the salon highlighting because the store bought doesnt have the conditioner toat the salons do so it dries out your hair

  • Hi, the products that I am featuring are salon products. They are the exact same products that my hairdresser used to use on me. She was kind enough to tell me what she used so that I could duplicate it at home. If you would like to highlight your hair at home, but have been going to the salon, you should definitely ask your colorist what she is using on your hair. It's always good to know what she is using even if you don't do your own hair, just in case you switch salons :o)

  • Do I have to use the same type of product as you use in order to foil, or can I use the boxed color you buy in the grocery store?

  • Hi, you don't have to use the same product as I did, but you do have to purchase a highlighting product, not a hair color.

  • is it "blue azul"?

  • Yes

  • @TheMilkshakePoem no azul means blue in spanish lol :D ,she messed up LOL

  • PLEASE ANSWER!

I have brown hair with blonde highlights and I want to dye my hair back to a dark brown, how should I dye my hair? Does it really matter? If I were to dye it all over would my blonde streaks appear darker then when I apply it to my brown hair?

  • Hi, I'm always reluctant to recommend coloring hair that has been highlighted as with some people the results are not as desired. You want to make sure your hair is healthy enough for more processing as well as highlighting can often cause hair to be dry and porous and more prone to breakage. Before you attempt this, be sure to read the box of hair color thoroughly and call the 800 number for any advice you may need.

  • You may want to consider consulting with a hairdresser first to make sure. You can probably use a semi-permanent hair color like Clairol Natural Instinct successfully. Please stop back and let me know who it came out :o)

  • You have beautiful hair highlights! I'd like some advice please. I color my hair, It's short. I have been coloring all of it but it's getting really dark now. I want to color only the roots, but I am not sure how I would get the back oof my head?

    Any advice?

  • Hi, I'm assuming you are speaking about all over permanent color rather than applying highlights. If I'm wrong, please write me back. The best way to do the back of your head is to enlist a friend, mom, husband, etc. If none is available then you have to have to use a hand-held mirror and turn around and reflect it off another mirror to see the back of your head.

  • Tnx so much for this!! You have no idea how much this helped me!!! :D

  • youre adorable x

  • thank you for your informative video. i've been using med blonde (nice 'n easy) on my brown-going-grey-hair. my hair colour now, is more or less the colour it was before the hairdresser put copper on most of the head, plus a blond streak at the front. what i would like to know is: can i use the same method you demonstrated with the bleach on thin strands of the med.blonde coloured hair without the hair turning orange? i use 40vol creme bleach (i live in the uk). thank you.

  • Hi, usually you can highlight hair that has been coloured with a one process treatment. Be sure to read the box of the nice n' easy just to make sure. Often these companies have an 800 number you can call for advice and they are very helpful. Remember, you cannot highlight hair that is grey as it cannot be lifted to blond. So when you choose your pieces to highlight, be sure you are gathering in some hair that still has pigment.

  • should think about donating to locks of love for cancer patients.....i hair cut to the shoulder length would look so cute on you

  • OMG u look like somebody i saw on tv wait r u on tv lol

  • enjoyed ur vid. luv ur cross. i hav one in white gold

  • Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaattt did u seriously do it all ur self! it looks professional

  • Hi, I have very dark brown hair and want to highlight my hair blonde, just like yours. So my question is, should i use THE same products that you are using? Because i want light blonde.

    Thank You

  • Hi, you can use the same products I used. Be sure to check your foils periodically until you reach the level of lightening you desire. Remember, if you do not use heat, you can leave the foils on your head for up to 90 minutes of lightening. If you decide to use the heat method as described on the package, you will need a hairdryer with cap that goes over your head and no more than 10 minutes of heat.

  • I don't use the heat method because I think you have better control over the color you achieve and it's much less damaging for your hair. When you have long hair like me, you have to do the most you can to protect it. I love blond highlights and you will too. Remember to use a shampoo and conditioner for color treated hair to protect and preserve them. Good luck :o)

  • Hii.. i am of a indian decent (wheatish skin tone) ... and i have natural dark dark brown hair.. almost black.... i dont want to dye my hair as i dont want to take extra care of them afterwards... however i want to highlight my hair.. and i am not sure which color(s) to pick to do so... it will be my first time.. and at salon it's really expensive.. so i want to do it at home.. but wud it be advisable to go to a salon my first time or no? plz help mee!!

  • Hi, I think highlights would be lovely. They look terrific on everyone as long as the color is suitable. You have very dark hair, so you don't want to go too light. I think a warm light brown would look very pretty. I would suggest you do just a few to frame your face. You don't need a lot to brighten your look and give depth to your hair. Do a test spot somewhere toward the back of your head to see if you like the color you chose before you do the rest of your hair. Good luck.

  • Thanks soooo Much! I watched so many youtube videos and just cant find the right one, but your is perfect!! Your the best!

  • Hi, I was wondering if the longer you leave in the foil with the product, the lighter your hair strand gets? I love your videos by the way.

  • Hi, yes that is correct. So you'll definitely want to check your foil periodically while it is developing to make sure you control the amount of lightening you want.

  • i want to bleach out my brunette hair, with the products in your video but i have trouble finding it on the Sally Beauty website could you post a link where you found your products?

  • my hair is dyed dark brown its about level 5 and i want to highlight my hair a dirty blonde but i think i have to bleach it first how would i approach doing that, like how long would i have to keep the bleach in and do i wash it out before i put toner in or do i just wipe the bleach out with a towel??? please respond thank you (:

  • You can apply highlights to your dyed hair. How long you would need to leave the product on is kind of a trial and error when you do it for the first time because you don't know how quickly your hair will come up. If you use Kaleidocolor by Clairol, you won't need a toner. They actually have several other tonal powder to choose from. You may want to check it out on their website to see which one will yield you the color you are trying to achieve.

  • You look like Linda Hamiliton

  • Since I have dark brown roots what developer should i use 20 30 or 40.... or should I color it first and then do highlights?

  • Hi, you should be fine with 30 or 40. Be sure to check you foil periodically to see how it's lifting.

  • Thank you for a great easy to understand video. I just finished doing my own lights and they came out great!! I have medium brown hair and wanted blonde lights. So, I used Salon Care 40 max lift and Loreal quick blue powder. Highlights took exactly 50 minutes. Your method is so much better than the "cap" method for sure. Thank you for sharing this and showing us that anyone can highlight at home for pennies!

  • Hi, thanks so much for sharing. I'm so glad you found my video helpful :o)

  • thx for all the usefull infos

  • thx the infos are very usefull

  • Do you NEED a highlight brush?

  • Hi, yes you do. Thanks :o)

  • @MusikFreakx101 you can get them really cheap at your supermarket!

  • Can you use normal kitchin foil?

  • Hi, you can, but it is harder to work with.

  • Hello i just wanted to ask you how Do you highlight your bangs area? because I really like your bangs.

  • Hi, I highlight my bangs the same way I do the rest of my hair. I just take scattered slightly chunky pieces and highlight them leaving some of my bangs their natural color to add depth.

  • can u reuse the foil if necessary

  • Hi, once they have been used and your done with your session, you'll definitely want to throw them away. They are usually pretty messy with product. While you are in the middle of your highlighting session you can certainly add more product to your hair that is in a particular foil if you think it needs an extra dose. Always start your highlighting session with clean foils.

  • Ive dyed my hair a whole bunch of times, and i want to go back to blonde, so can i highlight my hair using highlights?

  • Hi, generally you can highlight hair that has been dyed, however, since you have dyed your hair many times I'm not sure of the condition of your hair. I don't want you to suffer breakage, so if your hair is not in good condition (i.e. dry or damaged) it may not be in healthy enough condition to withstand highlights. You may want to consult with a color professional before attempting this for the first time. Be sure you go to someone who is experienced.

  • hi! im chinese n color wont take on my hair so i have to bleach it. i only want to do the tips of my hair though. would i need foils for that?

  • Hi, foils are always helpful because they will prevent the bleach product from getting on the hairs that you don't want bleached.

  • @mfae123 You'll not need foil except to block the bleach from getting onto hair you don't want lightened. If you are only doing the ends, you might want a friend to help you keep the line level, but you shouldn't need to use any foils. Bleach will take a while to lighten to a consistent color, so you may need to reapply. The 40 volume developer (not a volumizer, that's the measurement of lift) will generally lift up to 4 levels in one application.

  • i dont think you need foils hun, just make sure you get the same amount for your tips evenly around your head

  • thanks for your videos! i have been afraid to do my own hair, but have always wanted to! I am fed up with what salons charge!! i am going to try it on my own next time (thanks to your instructions!)!

  • Hello I use semi permanent hair dye every 6 weeks. can i add highlights after i dye hair then wait six weeks and dye hair again then add highlights?thanks

  • Hi, you can highlight your hair after using semi-permanent hair color, however, I would not recommend doing them at the same time. Wait a week or so then add your highlights. When you color your hair again in six weeks, you would only dye the new growth near the scalp. The same goes for highlights. You would highlight the new growth, not the already highlighted hair. Hope that helps.

  • Hey My hair is just like yours, same color, thickness, everything just about, I have regular alluminum foil, is that okay to use? I love your vids by the way!! :)

  • Hi, you can use regular aluminum foil, but they can be harder to work with, especially for a beginner. I always recommend using the hair foils. If you want to give regular aluminum foils a try, be sure you cut them into workable rectangular pieces before you begin. That will help you a lot once you are doing your hair. Good luck!

  • Hi :) I have very light brown hair naturally, and i recently had colour ( No bleach ) ... Would my hair be ok to bleach it completely blonde?

  • Hi, you didn't mention whether you used permanent color or semi permanent color initially. Whenever you go over already permanent-colored hair with a bleaching process, you have to give consideration. It's best if you consult a professional colorist for this type of change. If you already colored your hair yourself with a drugstore bought product, you can call the 800 number on the box to ask them. They have color experts to help. It's a good way to get another opinion.

  • Is it possible to dye your hair with a silvery blue sheen yourself?

  • Hi, yes you can. Next time you are in the drugstore take a look at what they have. You may find it with the permanent colors. Good luck!

  • Hello, um.... I have midnight black hair and I want to put some highlights in but I'm not really sure about the color. Are there any dark red that looks like black but in the right angle/sunlight is actually red?

  • Hi, it sounds like you want subtle red highlights. You can definitely have that, but I'm not familiar with what product I can suggest for you because I've always stayed in the blond family. Next time you're in a drugstore, look through their highlighting kits to get an idea of what's out there for you. Be sure to keep your highlights very thin if you want them to blend in with your black hair. Chunkier ones will show up more. Good luck.

  • You can also go to a salon and see a colorist for a consultation to see what he/she may suggest for you.

  • Hii, Im going to be dieing my hair.

My hair is like a Blackish/Brownish Colour, but i want blonde highlights.

    But i want them Thick.

Would the Highlights go a Different colour? and would it look right ?

  • Hi, you can highlight dark hair. When hair lifts it goes through different stages, with the final stage being the lightest blond. You will notice if you peek into the foil that at first you will see an orangy color before it turns to a yellow color. Be sure to leave your highlights cooking for long enough until your color comes up to the desired level you are seeking. Also, even though you want thick chunks, I always recommend separating the chunk into more than one foil.

  • Your highlights will come out better and more uniform that way. Good luck and have fun with it! Just remember to check them periodically until you see your desired color.

  • Beautiful job!

    My hair is dark brown/black.

What would you recommend for hair that is that dark?

  • Hi, how about light brown or warm golden blond highlights.

  • no you would not need foils, i would suggest not using it thou, i would and do use loreal, it works great, and not expensive about 15 dollers for the all over color and the highlights, works really well, try it, you'll love it.

  • I live in a small small town in Georgia with only about 1,000 people in it, we don't have expensive salons here, so the only place to really go would be Kmart or Walmart. We went to Kmart the other week and we decided to splurge and visit the hair supplies section and I noticed some of the dye came with a clear thing that looks similar to a hair straightener. You would use it like a hair straightener only it would be for color. Do you think that if I would have to use foil for that?

  • Hi, I do know some of the highlighting kits come with applicators that allow you to just brush on the color. You can do this, but I must caution you that the hair that gets the highlight mixture applied to it can often touch the other hairs that you don't want highlighted, and because those other hairs don't get a lot of product on them, but only touched by it, the result can be underprocessed hair that appears orange or gets partially highlighted with a stripe.

  • I would always recommend that people using foils to highlight because you can easily separate the hair that has product applied to it from the hair that is to remain natural. If you cannot find foils, you can always buy regular aluminum foil, store brand is better than Reynolds Wrap because it is sometimes thinner, and just cut the foils to size that you can use. Hope that helps. Good Luck :o)

  • Thanks for all of your help. I'm so subscribing! :)

  • where did you buy the dye brush?

  • Hi, I bought all my products at Sally Beauty Supply.

  • i have a question: i have my hair probably a long as yours...i just dyed it back to brown & im planning to use a kit for my highlights....but idk if i should apply to half of my head, or my full head...what do u recommend? thanks for the vid btw:) it has been very helpful :D

  • Hi, you're welcome; glad you liked it. I prefer half of the head. It helps keep your hair healthier and it adds depth to your hair color. Start small if you are new to highlighting so you can get used to doing it and make sure you like it, you can always add more.

  • Hi, I don't want to tell you the wrong thing. I only have personal experience with the blue for blond highlights. You may have to ask a colorist. Sorry, I wish I knew for sure.

  • I may be late in replying to this one (yes, I am licensed) and you do need to know what color the lightener will leave you with or reapply until it gets to the level you desire. If you have to apply more than once, moisturize, moisturize, moisturize to prevent excessive damage and drying.

  • Hi, caps are very hard unless you have really short hair and even then it's hard to make sure you're getting close enough to your scalp. I would recommend golden brown to a warm blond. They will definitely brighten up your face and give your hair depth. Start with a small amount of hair to make sure it's what you want.

  • You're so awesome! Thanks for the GREAT tips! I'm highlighting my hair today! (=

  • Excellent! Let me know how it comes out. If you need any help just write me :o)

  • this video was soo helpful!! i have dark brown hair, and i want to do my highlihgts at home. what color should i choose? i was thinking a light brown or a golden brown. what do u think? thanks again!!!! :]]]]]]]]

  • I think that you should use red

  • I'm so glad you liked my video! Since your hair is dark brown, I think you should stay with the warm colors. It depends on how light you want to lift your highlights, but I think a warm golden dark blonde would be nice.

  • i got brown hair and i just got some golden-brownish highlights. they look good ^^ go for it!

  • this is sooooo helpful :D

    thannnks

  • You're very welcome!

  • Hey, i love the video's, really helpful... but just one thing!!! can u tell your camera man (or woman!) to try to keep the camera in one place! Haha!!! Thank youuuu! (^_^)

  • We're working on that every time we film. It's hard but I think we're getting better and better. My cameraman is my son and he is learning as we go along. He has a wonderful interest in videography. I'm really glad you like my videos! Thanks so much for commenting :o)

  • hi,first i want to say i love the video! also, i've never colored my hair before, but i have that kind of blackish/brownish asian kind of hair and i waz thinking of doing a light golden brown color or a dark blonde, and was wondering if you have any suggestions. thanks! :)

  • Thanks so much! I think it would look great. Keep it on the chunkier side and frame your face with them. I think you could go with a a dark blond. Warm tones would be more appropriate for you since your hair is dark. Just try a few at first on either side of your face to start, just to make sure you like them. Good luck!

  • Love this video!!!!!!!

  • I have natural jet black hair/ eyebrows and wanna go lighter. I would looove to have a goldish kind of blonde but I have bronze skin and brown eyes so Im not sure what color would best suit me. I do not want to color my eyebrows so I need a color that blends well. Any suggestions??

  • I would suggest you use warm golden highlights to frame your face and then disburse them a bit toward the back of your head. Keep it subtle, though, because your hair is very dark. If you've never tried to highlight your hair you may want to get it done professionally and then try to keep it up yourself, or if you do it yourself, just try doing a few very thin ones in an inconspicuous area to see how you like it. Good luck!

  • Thanks I'll poke around a few salons and ask a few q's before I go ahead and do it.

  • hi! just wondering: can you use regular foil if you dont have the special kind?? great video by the way its super helpful!!

  • Hi, I'm so glad you liked my video! That's a really good question you asked. I did try once to use regular aluminum foil a long time ago in a pinch and you can use it, but I don't recommend it because it is harder to work with. Also, regular aluminum foil is thicker so the warmth of your scalp which lifts the color is harder to penetrate the foil. It's best if you buy the hi-lite foils. You can buy them in small packs too for just a couple of dollars. Good Luck!

  • I really appreciate this video and the detailed step by step instructions. Thank you! I am looking forward to Part II and Part III.
