  • Jerry at 2:13 too at the end of the clip.

  • 1:12 Jerry Garcia in the audience with a J in his mouth. This is downright surreal to watch.

  • YEP, ROCK & ROLL will always be... :-)

  • Yes, Lady Sunshine, this is the one song of ours in "Festival Express." Alas, we were not on the train, but intersected with it just for the Calgary gig.

No, Captain ShinyJunk--as if! We were not on coke, just good old natural adrenalin.

Thanks for the good words here--glad y'all enjoyed it, extreme tempo and all.

  • @drbrunoclarke How many songs did Sha Na Na play on that beautiful Calgary day? What plane did you have to catch?

  • Is that from the Festival Express???

  • Great superfast version! Sha Na Na is here to stay!

  • One good reason why back then they played these songs at such fast speed? They were all coked up. I love it.

  • Too fast.

  • And Bruce Clarke on bass! Also interesting is that Scott Powell left the group to go to medical school and is a highly-respected orthopedic surgeon in the Los Angeles area. Denny Green became an attorney. One of the greatest sax players ever, in my opinion, Lenny Baker, has been retired for some time, now.

What I will NEVER understand is WHY they had to do THIS song (and "At The Hop" at supersonic speeds like in this video and at Woodstock?

  • @kb6kgx They were inventing punk rock lol

  • I've been looking for "Canadian Money" for years for my Dad....can anyone email me an mp3?

  • @PolakInAKilt you can also rip it from youtube!

  • If you are gonna do rock n roll then this is how to do it. The greates bass singer and the greatest tenor singer were to join them later. Hats off to Sha na na. Didnt take themselves too seriously but man they were the bomb.

  • Jerry Garcia is smoking a cigarette? Scandalous.

  • Is this from "Festival Express"?

  • @ kissmusiclover. There is only one Sha Na Na. I remember watching their T.V.show in the 70s too.

  • Was this same Sha Na Na from the tv show?

  • @kissmusiclover A few of them carried over to the show, but most of the originals were gone by that point.

  • i saw the entire video of this cross country canada concert. the people of canada were saying that they should have been able to see these concerts for free, even the mayor demanding that the canadians be allowed in for free, but the tour manager wasn't haven't it and punch the mayor of calgary in the face. lol

  • Nice sleevless black sweater pal. They sell men's clothes where you bought that?

  • Merseymicheal have you ever meet any of the original guys they are so cool

  • Theres got to be more footage of this outdoor show someplace...imagine Woodstock in Calgary!

  • They dug up more footage of Sha Na Na's Woodstock performance. There's got to be more from this concert somewhere as well. Wjhere is it?

  • This was done in 1970...It is now 2011. Rock n' Roll is still here and WILL CONTINUE TO BE HERE!

  • @ultimentman2 BS, Rock is dead.

  • @robfergusonjr then gtho what are you doing watching this?

  • @Listener0934 LOL, some ppl can't handle the truth, eh listener0934?

  • a bigger group of silly fucks have never been invented

  • Legend!

  • That hippy at :30 is peaking and loving life, he can't believe what he is seeing and hearing lol!

  • @treetoptop That hippy is Robert Hunter Grateful Dead lyricist sitting with Gerry Garcia. Saw Sha Na Na in Lincoln, England in 1972. They could've been from outer space to us Brits. unforgettable . Jayne

  • @jellitot1 Thank you for the info. The look of total joy on that guy's face really gets me every time!

  • @jellitot1 Hey Jayne-I was also at the Lincoln festival.I felt so sorry for Joe Cocker

coming on staright after Sha na na.Halfway through Cockers set everyone around

me was still talking about the Shas amazing performance.I saw them in Liverpool

the year before and since about 10 times here in the uk and the states.

  • @merseymichael wow....what else do you remember from lincoln'72 ? I was only 16 and my mum came and picked me up at 1.am every morning ,parents didnt think i was old enough to stay over-night. It was bloody cold and windy but great line up eh..... Was my first festival and Ive never spoken to anyone about it in 30 yrs. Tell me all you know.....x jayne

  • @HeadLiceDurkalMonkee

"but the rainbow has a beard"

  • Who is the singer? Dosen't look like anyone from the bands Woodstock lineup.

  • @Rusfi16 Its Scott Simon,he joined spring 1970 just after a few of the woodstock lineup had left.

  • It seems to be from the Greatful Dead Canadian train tour. Lots of problems with gatecrashers at those shows. My understanding is that they (the ticketless gatecrashers) got out of hand several times. Can't always blame the cops. Peace.

  • We just got one thing to say to you f***in hippies LOL :D

  • What is the name of the guy at the start on the mic, in the red plaid shirt? Thanks

  • @treetoptop its screamin scott simon

  • @merseymichael Thanks man, he was intense lol, loved this

  • these guys were on some hella speed

  • Classic footage! I was in first grade when this was filmed. Love the crowd shots!! I think I saw a couple of my 'hippie' grade-school teachers in there ;) lol

  • Before the days of Jonny Contardo..,GREASE FOR PEACE!!!!

  • CHECK OUT THESE OUT FITS TOTALLY 70S AND BEST ERROR

  • @redshats1 you mean 'era'. 'Error' means a mistake.

  • @redshats1 totally 70s? 7 months into the 1970s and you call it totally 70s, wtf ... looks like 60s attire in the crowd and 50s attire on stage to me.

  • I was upset when their TV show was cancelled

  • i'm impressed with the clarity in this vid

  • Love this band , bloody brilliant, i'm with you tinybop22, rock and roll is here to stay, did it ever go away, hey i'm a poet, could be another robert zimmerman in the frame.

  • hahaha id smack a cop if he touched my camera

  • @Pledian yeah and you would get thrown in the dirt so fast

  • @rwk1983 doubt it, i run quick, prolly knock you over sprinting out though

  • rock on,,,,,

  • damn forgot GREASE FOR PEACE

  • I only wish there was more focus on the band and less on the cops

  • Lol Gerry Garcia is in the crowd listening to them lol he's does psychedlic music with the dead and sha na na do rock n roll music lol I like both types of music and I'm 17 and listened to rock n roll and psychedlic since I was 15 lol I'll allways listen to it

  • grimgrim it is Jerry Garcia the Dead also did bluegrass country & western & blues and rock & roll *** my first show was 1973 last show was 1995 I have been to a total of 81 shows go on you tube and check them out also not being a asshole and also that is not Jerry in this video Jerry only has 9 fingers

  • @yesdedhed trust me i no Jerry is in this video he is one of the crowd at 1:11 the Grateful Dead played at this concert they were before Sha Na Na or after it and ur so lucky to see the Grateful Dead u must be a dead head lol and what are talking about wen u say he has 9 fingers i dout that

  • grimgrim Jerry lost a finger in a accident cuttng wood right hand I will take your word what show was this as I said not being a asshole memory not like it use to be

  • @yesdedhed oh its totally ok i have a bad memory and im 17 :) lol but this was at the McMahon Stadium at Calgary in Canada on the July 4th, 1970 their some videos on youtube of the grateful dead at this concert doing hard to handle, dont ease me in and new speed way boggie you should check them out

  • If they were good enough for Woodstock, they're good enough for me. I saw them in Kansas City...pretty good show.

  • Sha Na Na ROCKS!!! It's a shame that they only have 1 song on the Festival Express DVD. Thanks for posting this!

  • this was great.

  • This is most Frantic Sha Na Na Preformance ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I give this preformance 10000 stars They are the best Revival group of all time.

  • i couldn't agree with these guys more, rock and roll is here to stay...

  • this is back when music was music

  • WOOOOO

  • Love these guys!

  • destroyed America? say something with substance if you're going to voice your opinion in public.

  • ROCK AND ROLL IS HERE TO STAY!!

  • @tinybop22 no, R.I.P. Rock and Roll, 1955-1998.

  • You could actually mosh to this song,eh!

  • i mosh to this song all the time, right here in front of my computer with no one else around! haha

  • OMG, this is too cool. I didn't know that Sha na na went this far back. I was a little girl when I watched the TV Show.

  • I see Denny. I think I see Donny...Is Santini there? Who's there??

  • line up that day was-elliot cahn, rich joffe,

    bruce clarke,scott powell,denny greene,

    rob leonard,larry packer,donny york,

lennie baker ,john bauman, jocko marcellino and sreamin scott simon

  • I couldn't see Bowser at all in that footage.

  • Hes there on piano at the back sitting down.

  • I had taken a closer look the second time around and noticed him.He must not have been featured as a frontman then but keep in mind that this was at least 7 years before Sha Na Na's variety show.I've seen many of the Calgary Stampeder games in McMahon Stadium where this took place.

  • He wasn't in the band at that time. He joined shortly after this appearance.

  • Bowzer was playing the piano in the background,I've been told.

  • At 2.04 look at the piano player standing up hair hanging loose-thats Bowzer-he joined 3 months before this show.

  • hippies have destroyed our culture and countrie(s) Canada and the United States

  • lmao

  • why are you even watching this video if you think like that? if anything, the hippies ARE an important part of Canada and America's culture and history....and how exactly have they destroyed our countries? They merely went against the government because they didn't approve of the war.....

  • they destroyed the moral foundation of our culture

  • the criminal war against the people in vietnam destroyed the moral foundation

  • but you have to admit that it was an extremely important movement in the history of our country, and this country is in the pits now, but you cant blame it on people who wanted more freedom....

  • wheres bowzer?

  • He's playing the piano!

  • many leftwing liberal hippies didnt like sha na na because sha na na refused to bash America and bash our brave vietnam veterans.Way to go guys.

  • still reliving Vietnam eh?

  • Thats true. I used to watch there TV show every night. I missed that show. By the way The remainning members who are still alive still support our troops.

  • Wasn't it a LITTLE EARLY to be nostalgic for the 50s then?

  • Looks like Jack Nicholson at :30.

Not enough grease on the lads to keep the hair back.

  • He's the one playing the electric piano! :)

  • That's what I thought after a moment of consideration. Thanks. Dude what is up with Santini in this video?! I think someone took a little something backstage before this performance! I was waiting for him to come up to the mic and say, "HEEERE'SSS JOHNNY!" This video get funnier every time I watch it, it's the combination of Sha Na Na and Canadian police beating on people!

  • It's Gino(Elliott Cahn). Scott Powell didn't take on the Santini persona until '73-74ish.

I believe he was Captain Outrageous in the earlier days.

  • Yeah Santini MUST HAVE been known as Captain Outrageous during the early period, because that dancing is OUTRAGEOUS! LOL.

  • He is now one of the top orthopaedic surgeons in the US.

  • Comment removed

  • freddy mercury copied his style from sha na na!!!! Cool

  • Wow. This is early Shanana Santini looks like he's on crack here--just waaay too animated and his hair is wack!

  • Have to say.. Santini kinda looks like Timothy Carey in The Worlds Greatest Sinner sometimes.

  • Comment removed

  • Is that Jerry Garcia in the crowd?

  • Sure is.

  • im singing this song in chours! this song is awesome

  • Man,this is way cool! Sha na na pre the great Bowzer.

  • With Sreamin Scott singing, Bowzer would be playing the piano.

  • I love 70s!

    They ROcK!!

  • lol 0:50 ....omg! my class is doing this for our spring concert!

  • Is doing what?

  • when i said were doing this for our spring concert i meant were doing the song for our concert. well be singing it. get it? oh, BTW, i changed my name. it use to be kookookkkayla.

  • early punk

  • rock n roll is here to stay

  • LOL I LOVE THIS! :D

  • We just got one ting to say to yous... and that is rock and roll is here to stay.

  • wow, thanks for this I was at their Toronto performance that year at the Varsity Arena,I believe Melanie was on the bill

  • was that Jerry Garcia at 1:12?!? sure looked liked him...

  • Yea it was, I'm sure of it.

  • sha na na sure love doing hippie gigs they where also in woodstock and the hippies alweays seem to love them because they never got booed cool to see jerry garcia in the crowd sha na na rocks

  • I love Scott Powell !

  • HELL YEA! ROCK ON!

  • ROFL. i love the dance moves!!!

  • Yeah, but the dancing kicks ass.

    Them's some DOPE-ASS moves...

  • You are obviously not a rocker. This is the roots of rock and roll. This is "dancing music" That is also a name of one of the songs they perform. Music would be a lot better off if it had stuck to its roots.

  • AMEN BROTHER!!!!!

  • You don't know what you are talking about. This is ORIGINAL Rock & Roll!!! Right on Steven8124!!!

  • Great! always a thrill to see SNN before they got their tv show & became cartoon characters.their best years were '69-74.they were untouchable then. Can't some young guys bring back old Rock & Roll now??

  • hey where are all of the original characters of the group most of those dudes look like hoodluma qho cant even sing or dance looks like someone shoved a hot poker up thier trap doors

  • What happen to the video when he says something about hippies before singing this song?

  • Yeah, that was in '73. Before they got on TV & started Playing for families, he used to say "we got one thing to say to you fuckin' hippies" sadly, they mellowed with age.

  • Jesus Christ! Thanks for posting this, i always enjoyed viewing SNN before they got their own show, so many talented people revolved through the line up!

    ALSO

Okay, here's one for you, Johnny Contardo, a girl friend, a nerdy mechanic and the late Vinnie Taylor might have been on a public service commercial stating for viewers to "shop Around" before making purchases, repair, etc. Does this ring a bell with anyone? Is it on YOU TUBE?

  • @crescentmooncomics

First time I've heard of such a public service commercial. Doubting the rumor's accuracy.

  • Sha Na Na, The Ramones of the 60's! lol

I found it strangely and amusingly ironic that violence broke out during the Sha Na Na set of good time, old skool Rock & Roll from more innocent times. It's not like The Stones performing Sympathy For The Devil at Altamont 8 months earlier.

  • There were no innocent times.

  • They represent a time that was definitely more innocent than the 60's, 70's, 80's 90's and especially the 21st Century thus far.

I did say "more innocent", you'd have to admit the decades have gotten progressively more sexualized, permissive and morally relaxed.

  • And Bob Weir at 1:42, lower right hand corner !!!

    Fun

  • Brilliant! So much fun, look at sha na na wake them stoned hippies up.

  • Notice Jerry Garcia in the audience at 1:12.

  • I don't know what festival it was, but I am pretty sure this is the only song they played.

  • AS a canadian and Sha Na Na fan, this is an awesome piece of video. What festival was this and did they play more than one song?

  • They did a 40 min set, this was their encore.

Its from the film Festival Express. This is the

only clip of SNN in the movie-shame.

  • Hey Merseymichael. Thanks again for answering my question. What a fantastic clip. SNN could really put on a show. Was Vinnie Taylor playing guitar at this time? DO you know the origin of the gold suits? Hope you don't mind my questions, but you seem to be an expert.

  • Hi Aldersbrook, its no problem to answer your questions. This was filmed in summer 1970 with

Larry Packer on lead guitar,Vinnie Taylor didnt join until jan/feb 1971.

The gold lame was put on the give a sort of cheer leader effect to front the group, adding

a bit of glam to the act.

  • I know alot about Sha Na Na as well, I even got a pictuer of Vinnie Taylor tattooed to my right arm I have met members & exmembers. Accept no imitations, I am the expert { except on who sleeps with who} tht I could care less about.

  • @aldersbrook11 Donny York of ShaNaNa here. If you're still motivated, you can email me c/o shanana.com and I'll answer other weird questions you can think of!

  • @donnieork .... Donnie ... you are fabulous ... keep rocking!!!

  • @AGibsonJ

Nice of you. Hope it doesn't turn you off, but nowadays I've got a more "controversial" YouTube posting via

    FiredUpFifer dott com

  • @donnieork , just checked it out, it's a riot, served with humor and well done!!!

  • @donnieork Was that the only song performed by Sha Na Na at that concert or was there more? Can't get enough of Sha Na Na.

  • @Rusfi16 It was part of a full hour performance.
