Senators are NOT addressed by their titles just because they're in the Senate chamber. What do you do make things up and hope nobody catches it? Military personell have ALWAYS called senators "sir" or "ma'am". She was being a bitch. End of story.

I think it should be further stated that this really isn't about what it appears to be. There is great contempt in her voice. The tonality of his voice suggests that disrespect was not intended. Yet, there is something driving what appears to be visceral anger in her. It seems that she intended to "put him in his place." It was a display of power.

Chigrants, you aren't presenting a legitimate analogy. "Mister" would be analagous to "Ms." as opposed to "Ma'am." Ma'am would be analagous to "Sir." Ma'am and Sir are respectful forms of address intended for general use.
Certainly "senator" would be more appropriate however Ma'am is not disrespectful in this case.

It isn't necessary to make our point and in fact it lessens the impact of your statement. Be passionate, be angry, stand your ground, but stay on point and use words instead of street slang.
