Samsonov has a solid stance, never pushes himself and uses his reach. Where Schlager keeps moving around for position, pushes himself to the limit and uses snap movements to hide how he will hit the ball.

I just watched the final in Pro Tour German Open 2010, Berlin, and compared to the Ma Long-Wang Hao fight this seems slow motion - knowing that these guys are still lightning fast. Crazy.

The footstomp is to mask the sound of the contact with the ball and the bat. It disguises the amount of spin put on the ball. When you're a top level athlete like these guys, every movement and technique has some kind of justification for it.

samsonov could have beaten schlager reaching 9 first against 7 in the final set. well, these two legends are always great to watch. schlager just stayed more focused and eventually nailed samsonov's score and won the match. nice video by the way..peace

It's funny how Samsonov can do much better than Schlager when playing against the Chinese, but Schlager beats Samsonov consistently.

because Samsonov's power lies in blocking extremely hard smashes. Since the Chinese play a lot harder then Schlager (atleast nowadays) and because Samsonov is more consistent, he wins more against the Chinese. Schlager is just more of a tactical player then Samsonov.

@taufoofar Because Schlager is more consistent than Chinese players, but Schlager lacks the power and carefulness to beat Chinese players, Samsonov is consistent enough and careful enough to out-block and out-counter the Chinese, Schlager is too offensive and can't out gun them, like everyone else.

he was better than these guys when he was young that's true... but to say that you couldn't compare them to him is a bit too much. remember that the level now is higher than it was 10 years ago.

You can not compare levels from today with 10 years ago...Waldner with new technique, coaches and training from this time would still be one the best players in the world, no doubt. People just get slower when they get older and their interests are different now. Waldner is not training everyday anymore for hours, if he did that im sure he could be top 10 again, his interests are now his family, other sports like golf and not only training for tabletennis...

it's pointless to guess how waldner would play with modern training and technique.... his old training and technique together with his talent made him what he was.

some say if waldner was born in china of today he would never become as good because the modern technical approach would restrain his natural game.

samsonov's playing style is very soft...the chinese commentators used to describe that samsonov is playing "tai-chi"(a chinese martial art with a soft n slow technique applied in it)when he is playing against his opponents. his tai-chi playing style had defeated many korean players especially ryu seung min. besides that,his awesome skills had created many problems among the chopper such as ding song,joo se hyuk n so on. he is one of the best european tt players of all time..

Your absolutely right Samsonov has no problem defeating defensive players. I don't think he ever lost a match against a defensive player. I hope this year he becomes the WTTC Champion. It seems like the Europeans have adjusted quickly to the speed glue ban. The Chinese needs to catch up ASAP to retain there dominace. IMO

they are adapt already because they have at least some rubber with speed glue technologies, the chinese don't have those things yet, so they have to glue illegally
