Hey, I'm from the delta and I think this is hot!. The beginnings of rap and hip hop lay in basements and bedrooms of kids doing new stuff with old music, mixin' n scratchin'. This is blues and hip hop in their purest forms merged for something funky. I love that this guy even knows who robert johnson is.
@chooby3000 then the second he starts cuttin, he switches into the zone - all he can do is look you in the eye, otherwise he's somewhere else, there in body but not mind...
@ insanewarlock your an idiot mate, alright Robert johnson IS a legend but what mixmaster mike has done IS a genius, I'd say your a bit narrow minded,.....
No, bro, homage. I love the blues, listen to Robert Johnson every day still, just about. Mike's just incorporating the legend into something contemporary. it doesn't detract anything from what Johnson did, it incorporates a really classy sound source into what Mike's doing.
absolutely true. it's even been officially uploaded to youtube. So, if you're watching this amazing clip, then you'll be able to watch the doc not problem lol.
This is still one of the best pieces of audio ever created.
yep, the original press is very rare, I doubt it one of the original presses of the record though because it would be nuts to even play the record let alone scratch it. The originals are worth a ton of dough.
That Dead Prez beat is prolly one of the simplest hip hop beats I've heard. The shit sounds like it was almost made by Swizz Beatz. Funny cause it's one of the most recognizable beats in hip hop though. Hear that shit almost everywhere.
That Dead Prez beat is prolly one of the simplest hip hop beats I've heard. The shit sounds like it was almost made by Swizz Beatz. Funny cause it's one of the most recognizable beats in hip hop though. Hear that shit almost everywhere.
I remember watching this documentary in a big lecture auditorium at MTSU a couple years ago. When this clip came on my eyes started watering and my head starting nodding uncontrollably. So powerful. Turn it up and enjoy.
Oh man the vid is just 43 sec but i´m listening to it for about half an hour now. if i had the money for two turntables i would practise 24/7. and when i would have reached a simillar level i would do nothing but this dope shit all the day......MixMasterMike is incredible...i´ll bet he did that spontaneously (sorry for my fucked up english)
I'm glad this is on YouTube because I was wanting to show a friend the clip. I remember watching this documentary for the first time and rewinding this scene probably 6 times. Everytime I've watched it after that I still rewind it. Its one of the sickest cuts ever. Amazing that Mix Master Mike probably does stuff like this on a daily basis.
might not be doing much, but the guy thought of putting johnson together with a dead prez beat which is somthing original that i haven't seen lets give they guy some credit..
Damn, man, you don't have to lie to kick it. Big fucking deal, you can spout off deck specs and you probably do spin - good for you. But have you sold over 9 million records and have been forced to retire from the DJ World Championship? Didn't think so. Shut the fuck up and give the man respect.Yeah, it's your opinion, but it just happens to be a stupid one.
FYI he's not using a modulator. It's called the tweak scratch, turn the turntable off and slowly manipulate the non-spinning plate with your hand. MMM is a master of this technique. He's so good it sounds like he's using some additional equipment, oscillators, ring modulators, etc. but he's not. You have the equipment to do it, you just don't have the skills. Think you can? I agree with nininjak, bullshit, like to see you try, post a vid...
1. If you're not a dj then don't say "if i had one of those little oscillators and another tt i could do it..."
2. He is going directly in. Ask anyone who knows what they're talking about.
slider switch? button? The tweak is simply a style, one of many that only uses a turntable to manipulate the sound and a fader to cut the sound on and off.
He has reached such a level of talent that he can make the most basic DJ technique sound both simple and amazing. I'd say that the majority of practicing DJs in the world couldn't make scratching and fading sound that dope.
@ penguinpunter: by mentioning robert johnson, mix master mike definitely respects him more than certain rock musicians, who basically ripped off johnson and sold his music as their own. old music styles survive thanks to dj's, who keep digging old records out of the crates, where they have been forgotten.

you are a moron... wtf is it with everyone always thinking you gotta be hella technical all the time in order to sound dope...
crazychickenboyboy 4 years ago
i'm not trying to sound "dope" you fucking douchebag
2nd, a fucking basic knowledge of mixing would tell you what i was talking about
Technics MKII-best turntable in it's price range
Mixer- used to adjust the eq, mix different inputs with others etc.
crossfader- "fades" in or out of 2 selected inputs
modulator- modulates the sound (wavering pitch)
and an record of king of the delta blues
capiche?

1. i'm not a dj, so i don't have the skills do do it directly in o the preamp
2. he's not going directly in, and the camera angle sucks, you cant see what his left hand is doing the whole time
you say the slider switch is a tweak scratch?
or is it the button?

at first i was being semi sarcastic about the comment, because it seemed fairly easy just watching him spin the platter, and user the crossfader
btw, did you make that video to prove me wrong?
i would try, but considering my tt (which i only use to play records) does not even have nearly the torque or start up speed like any good turntable
i suppose this is where i say i was wrong
