And after reading an interview, I found that the Super Mario 3D land is, in fact, a pun on Super Mario 3! That was the game which introduced the Tanooki suit, and it's logo had a tail too. It's something subtle like the U R MR GAY in Super Mario Galaxy, except this time around, it was intended.

I just remembered! There is actullay a New Super Mario Bros DS Soundfont that allows you to use the instruments from the game to make music remixes.

I have seen several examples of Mario remixes using the New Super Mario Bros soundfont and the author has a Super Mario 64 sound font as well with examples.

You could in theory make all the songs of Super Mario Bros 3 to be used for this hack using the newer instruments.
