Wow, I'm 20 now, and watching this as a kid, I never realized how powerful this scene was, I just knew Judy's voice was incomparable! Thanks, for sharing your gift with us, Judy! RIP
Grace Kelly's performance in 'Country Girl' was exceptional and brilliant, but Judy here and this scene alone should have won her the award. She's genuinely heartbreaking, and I think 'A Star is Born' is her greatest film. But I love both actresses, they were both deserving of the nomination.
This is especially powerful when you watch the scene immediately before this when she's receiving her best actress award and her drunk husband steals the spotlight to ask for a job.
As great as she is in the whole scene, it's the knockout punch of her going from tears to the reprise of the giddy song from around 4:15 on that really shows the genius of both Garland and Cukor. It's my favorite bit from the whole film --- am I the only one?
I love when she wipes starts to wipe her eyes just before her cue!
Unshockingly and hands down the acting of the century!!!! I mean, who can give you such stark duality other than Judy Garland? And Beyonce is going to play Esther in the newest remake? I'm a fan of Beyonce, but she doesn't even measure up to one of Judy's farts.
I admire the scene for a few things: its irony [she is talking about herself] and the timing, this is during the 1950s when it was rare to see this sort of scene in an American film. As for Grace Kelly, she had 4 hits in 1954 so how could she lose?
Wow... Judy Garland was magnificent in this scene.... I've never seen this movie, but I think I'm going to have to.. just after watching that one bit. You can tell she put everything she'd been through at the time into that. Just.. amazing..!
Well, the fact is, she didn't win the Oscar and it's a damned shame because she was a tour de force in this movie except for this WAY over-the-top scene, and I think it is one of the most overwrought scenes in what was otherwise one of the best films ever. Judy rocks, nonetheless.
That being said, I respect the opinions of those who disagree, too.
Cukor was a FOOL to do this scene w/ her in clowny makeup. She's already mega-dramatic. If Cukor had had her wiped-down and plain, it would have been shockingly good. Anyhow, Grace Kelley on her best day couldn't equal one of Judy Garland's worst farts, so, yeah, this Oscar was fucked. Maybe if the category was "Best Performance Ever" ... ?
Well, I think the point was to have her in "happy clown" makeup (play-acting) in order to further the contrast against her actual mood. It highlighted the sacrifice she was making for her public image versus her personal life. The end of the scene further illustrates this as she abruptly changes expressions and moods when she knows the camera is rolling. A bit obvious, perhaps, but that was the intent.
After finally seeing the country girl recently i totally agree that Judy should have gotten the oscar. Grce Kelly was okay but Judy was...wow. Its funny how today its argued whether or not people get oscars for the work or their dues. Sadly i dont think Judy got the chance to get that kind of arguement. Cause she never got the award she deserved.
For me, this is Judy's masterpiece. I too love The Clock, A Child Is Waiting (w/Burt Lancaster), her POWERFUL scene in Judgment At Nuremberg, of course the earlier MGM musicals-The Harvey Girls, Meet Me In St. Louis, In The Good Old Summertime, etc. But this film blew the roof off of anything she'd done. Virtuoso singing, dancing, and acting. I DETEST Jack Warner BUTCHERING this film and Judy, Sid Luft, & George Cukor were powerless. She was robbed the Oscar but she OWNS the hearts of the world.
I am reduced to tears everytime I watch this scene ..a Bravura performance and yes, she WAS robbed by the Oscar Academy, who hated her for her past transgressions with the Studio's she worked for...will always be Oscar's greatest bone headed Blunder's ..she was such a natural at acting...always in the moment, raw, vunerable, real ..Love it when she catches up to the musicical sync and jumps in and is as perfect as usual ...when she lost the Oscar, it hurt her deeply but came back to Triumph xo
Grace Kelly was very beautiful, but I never really caught onto her appeal. I feel her to be overrated and her acting ability is a bit weak, especially compared to Judy. Everyone knows she should've won.
@superhetoric I am second to none in my admiration for Garland. She was a great entertainer/actress and her voice was fantastic. However...Kelly deserved the Oscar that year. Ironically, they were both playing women who had sacrificed much for the sake of an alcoholic husband. Kelly's performance was definitely more subtle and measured. She managed to convey her own personal tragedy without any obvious "tics" or pathos. Garland should have won for other performances, but not that year.
Judy deserved the Oscar. However, Director Cukor did her no favors by encouraging her to "act"--as if she hadn't been a brilliant actress from the age of 16! He allows TOO much pathos, TOO much emotion, TOO many nervous gestures. Aside from her physical miscasting (too mature-looking) her efforts seemed forced at times--fascinating and well-done, but a bit over-the-top. She was such a great natural actress, she never had to "push" an emotion--but she did in this film. Still, she was robbed!
Okay...this is actually a perfect performance from Judy--brilliant. But I finally realize what's wrong with this scene:
They put her in a clown outfit, and it's dumb, to do that kind of scene in such a get-up. Hokey. Great for the song, bad for the drama. Cukor should've had her out of the hat, without the clown-freckles. The costuming detracts. Exec in a suit, Judy=clown?
It's like: she didn't need to be in a goofy tramp costume to "sell" Over the Rainbow. She just needed to sing it.

Maybe it's just me, but her acting was hammy and over-the-top here. Watch her act in, say, The Clock.
Natural.
perfect.
unhindered by self-caricature.
Don't get me wrong: all around, performance-wise, Judy ~easily~ outshown Grace Kelly...but for purely excellent dramatic acting, it was truly a close call. They cut too many of Judy's awesome *subtle* scenes in this, leaving the hammy bits. That's why it was not a 'shoe-in' on various awards nights, for Judy. Damn Warner.
I kind of understand where you're coming from. 'A Star Is Born' isn't my favourite but I LOVE 'the clock.' You're right, it is very natural and fabulous.
But she still should have won the Oscar for this movie.
I get what you're saying somewhat... The beginning of the scene, for me, was a little shaky and not quite natural and slightly over-the-top. However, when she delivers the line, "I hate him," the emotional hitch in her voice, the way she is trying to hold back the sobs comes through in her voice and in her face, is so believable. That line and the next few that follow are enough to take your breath away... for me at least. I agree with you, damn Warner for taking out some of the best scenes!
@Vengeance509 The emotion in this scene is AMAZING. she was playing herself, absoulutely beautiful, not hammy. Just seeing this i feel she deserved the oscar, but then again I havent seen Grace's performance.
@Vengeance509 Made me cry even now, so I guess we have different definitions of what hammy consists of. Try not to be one of those self important jerks who looks down their noses at greatness okay?
Judy was exquisite in everything she did. She destroyed herself trying to be everything that the companys wanted her to be. Theres an old clip with her and Barbra Streisand on her show when she jokingly tells her that she's so good she really hates her for it. Streisand later said that judy was shaking terribly because it was the end of her career. It really makes you understand the kind of fear she had of her dream ending. I wish there was a way she could know that even now she isnt forgotten
It is horrible how Judy was robbed of HER Oscar that year. She put every ounce of her heart and soul in to this film and it shows. A crying shame. Just awful!
judy had made too many enemies in hollywood by this time and not giving her the oscar was payback from them. what hurt even more they gave it to grace kelly......
I think you may be right hebneh, I think that is why this scene is so powerful. She could have been talking about herself. I love Judy and this scene is amazing, although not one of my faves. She does such a brilliant job, because it was real to her. She was an incredible person.
See, she knew about addiction. She could show all those emotions with such power because she was living this in real life - except from the other side, as the addict herself.
The amazing contrast where she goes back on the set and jumps into the happy performance is terrific.
Yes, it's terrific, this scene is so powerful, I can see it again and again, Judy Garland deserved the oscar, I think we all agree to give it to her. " A star is born" is a wonderful movie...I think James Mason also deserved an oscar...
Isn't she Marvelous!..boy...You know I never get tired of this scene or this movie...or the scene at the hospital in 'I could go on singing'...Both a tour de force in Judy's abilities to wring out every emotion in herself and the viewer...I've added this video to my Fav's...Thanks Alice...:)...X
thnak you so much for posting this clip this scene is absolutely devastating...and an amazing testament to judy's remarkable, awe-inspiring dramatic talent. This scene never fails to bring me to tears.
