no. actually you can damage the cap that way. I prefer a punch because it creates not too big a hole, does not destroy the cap and you have more cigar to smoke (despite the fact that a straight cut is a relatively basic cut and only cuts a quarter of an inch at the top.)

your not supposed to cut the entire cap thats what holds it together. u are supposed to take about 1/8 or even 1/16 of an inch or so off...not 1/2 inch.
