  • I somewhat know how to sweep, but I can't keep the strings muted without using a capo or something. Any suggestions?

  • Should learn Triads first

  • TBH I unknowingly learnt to cheat sweep pick and ended up sticking with it. Definitely not the way to go - if you learn properly you don't need the example he plays at the end. Reason I say this is the clarity of play is affect and learning properly opens more complex and diverse playing

  • Love how all these guys are saying that this guy sucks... sure he did not go to far into detail... but he shows basic sweeping, so I am not sure what these "hardcore guitar sweepers" are all doing here on a tutorial on how to sweep.

  • Why's everyone hating on the guitar? Fender strats are great instruments

  • I think you need to get in touch with the note.

  • Yippy! Hurray for Gary!!!!!! :D

  • tbh this video helped me alot i dunno what the bad comments are all about :L and dont troll me ive just started learning sweep picks

  • @NolitaDenise Malmsteen RULES :D!!!!

  • Etwas weniger verspielen;

    Wirkt klarer denn :+)

  • Mediocre guide to sweeping, you should start with 3 string shapes and expand from there with a metronome. 5 string shapes are tough to jump straight into!

  • Hey man I live twenty minutes away from Monticello. That's crazy.

  • Is ESP a good brand?

  • @icefiredarksector748 tes ESP is an awesome brand, alot of band members use this type of guitar brand, Jeff Hanneman of Slayer, James Hetfield, Kirk Hammet of Metallica, and so Tom Araya of Slayer uses an ESP bass guitar, they are quite a bit expensive though, however they do sell LTD's which are a lower priced version of the ESP's

  • @btd96 I recommend anything made by dean. they make affordable good quality products. i have guitar made by them that is almost the same as their vendetta but it has a basswood flat black les paul style cut away body, and it only cost me 120. but if you are looking to get into music you are going to have to struggle to get equipment financially untl you are making buku bucks. i had to eat donated food for months to get my mix board, pre amp, guitar, gig bag, chords, strings, picks, & strap.

  • @k03dnoob well my inspiration music wise is from heavy metal bands (metallica, slayer, rob zombie, etc.) so, but 200 is a LITTLE out of my range, cause right now i dont have a job, but next year i might sign up as an employee at my local music store as a worker in the back rooms or restocking trhe shelves, nothing special. And im gonna do that to make money

  • @btd96 save up! or go on thorman, they do some amazing guitars, some can play metal and there under 140. but i do strongly recomend ibanez, carvin, or bc rich. gibson ONLY if there custom. otherwise they suck

  • @k03dnoob well actually lately on guitar canter, i found a BC Rich Kerry King V for only 130 but of course i cant test it our, but it looks awesome, and im sure if it was unoperational they wouldnt sell it for over 100 dollars haha, and im looking at getting that for my bday or christmas....which are conveniantly close to each other haha

  • What kind of pickups are those?

  • This guy might not be great at sweeping, but he is giving people the tools to practise it for sure, so why does everyone hate on him?

  • So basically if I master sweep picking on A minor I can sweep pick anything?

  • @legoguy816 don't forget that Kirk Hammett used a Strat with a Floyd Rose on it in the "One" music video!

  • i wish i could play that AWESOME sweep at 19 seconds!! it is SO rad!

  • Sweep picking: Limiting guitarists creativity since 1984.

  • post hardcore has the same guitar skill but better vocals

  • Moi j'aime perso...

    C'est instructif

  • since when does heavy metal use major?

  • 1:20 ... reminds me in some way of Megadeth

  • @0458FEO me too.

  • i like the end xD

  • @alexstypes Jim root....

  • @prsfloods The guitarists from Iron Maiden use Jackson's which are Fender's guitars that are suited for metal playing. Regular Strats are not made to handle the high gain settings that a metal player would use fir that you would need a super strat guitar (like Ibanez, Jackson, Dean.. etc.). So actually Adrian Smith and Dave Murray do not use Fenders check fender's site and you will see that they are not listed. Then check Jackson's site. Come back and thumbs up since i'm right.

  • @D1vid3By0 They use Charvel's. A Charvel isn't really a Jackson, even if the Jackson brand was an offshoot of the Charvel. Why, you might ask? Because a Charvel is usually a hotrodded Fender as it has more in common with Fenders.

  • @austinfailz

Charvels are pretty much the same thing as Jacksons to me, When did they start using Charvels? I've seen them use it a couple of times but i'm quite sure they are Jackson endorsees. Either way a Charvel is still as you say, a hotrodded Fender, in other words a super strat (more like a strat on roids). Thanks for the info though, i never understood the split in companies. Wasn't Adrian's guitar stolen a while back? Did he ever get it back?

  • @alexstypes Who in metal players fenders? There is a group called Iron Maiden that does/did. You may have heard of them?

  • @alexstypes Dave Murray of Iron Maiden uses a fender to play metal.

  • @alexstypes I play dethklok and I own a texas fat strat lol

  • @alexstypes jim root plays fender, and tons of artists use his guitar

  • The English word guitar, the German gitarre, and the French guitare were adopted from the Spanish guitarra, which comes from the Andalusian Arabic قيثارةر qitara, itself derived from the Latin cithara, which in turn came from the Ancient Greek κιθάρα kithara, and is thought to ultimately trace back to the Old Persian language. Tar means string in Persian

  • @thrashmasterz metal guitar!

  • jimi hendrix was the most evil and dark satanic black metal artist of his time...strat!

  • @alexstypes Obituary, Andreas Kisser, Iron Maiden, Jim Root, John 5, Steve Vai on his earlier albums, there are plenty of metal players that use Strats/teles, it's all a matter of what feels comfortable to use, and also what people can afford purchase in the first place.

  • @alexstypes IRON MAIDEN

  • @alexstypes Yea, metal guitarists tend to go for guitars with flat fretboards like Jackson, Ibanez, ESP etc.

  • @alexstypes jim root??

  • Nice Taco Bell cup :D Pause @ :52 for a funny look lol

  • @alexstypes you cant be more right man any guiar can be used for any style it all depends on what the player wants. As for Fender metal bands Iron Maiden uses them C.C from posion can be seen using them from time to time. I have one and i play Metal works good.

  • @alexstypes maiden plays fender

  • @alexstypes saw the obituary guitarist playin a fender:D

  • @alexstypes iron maiden use fenders all the time bro

  • @shreddy412 any for leftie?

  • @123flippnout Well dude what's your budget?

  • @123flippnout Well the guitar players for slipknot generally use jackson guitars but schecter guitars are in my opinion good metal guitars-because of the EMG active pickups and the thin sliding neck

  • @zachzachzach43 amp, cables, tuner, case, new strings, and string changing equipment, 200 dollars

ibanez guitar is that good for playing metal cause its a great deal my friend offered

  • @zachzachzach43 i still love ibanez :D

  • nope nvm... it just looks the same lol

  • hes got the same guitar as me... jus sayin

  • @beska123456789 I have the same one too ..

  • Owesome)))

  • lol i like how he uses a strat

  • @FullSolo with two humbuckers.

  • @Kingddd333 needs emg's

  • @FullSolo nope. Active pickups are so overrated

  • @Kingddd333 I agree its just not every day you see a strat on a heavy metal tutorial

  • @FullSolo yeah usuallly you see an esp horizon or ibanez of some sort

  • @Kingddd333 ya or a jackson or emg les paul

  • @tomasignacioo Tell that to Rivers Cuomo

  • @TheNatedogg56 No because his guitar isn't a traditional strat. But if you care, I'm gonna do it, just because you and your opinion are too much important for me :)

  • @tomasignacioo uh, for all intents and purposes, it is. It's a Warmoth body (and neck also, i think) who specifically make fender replacement bodies and necks. So if his isn't a traditional strat, then neither is this guy's.

  • @TheNatedogg56 No,You didn't understand me. I mean, Cuomo's guitar doesn't look like a traditional strat, because for me, a traditional strat is sunburst with white pickguard, or black with white pickguard o whatever. The colours make the difference, not the shape.

  • @alexstypes

    everybody in Iron Maiden?

If you like the feeling of a strat, and you like metal, put some hot humbuckers in it and you're good to go,

there's nothing wrong with playing metal on a strat...

  • @Guitarvirtuoso666 i play a Strat HH which has Dual humbuckers in it. I love it for rock tunes, and i can sweep on it cleanly. the only main problem is most metal is in a lower tuning than E standard, and it doesn't do as well once you go to C standard tuning. lots of issues regarding string tension.

  • Excellent dude!!! Thanx 4 uploading!!!! Don't stop!!!

  • still kinda having trouble with sweeping

  • @tomasignacioo To tell you the truth, one might like the feel of the strat, but hate the tone he get's from it with 3 single coils, so I personally like the strat, I'd love to have one of those.

  • Nice

  • I can see he's learning…

  • not if you get cool humbuckers

  • @Metonium I LIKE IBANEZ DO YOU

  • God man whats with all the criticism on this dude? ive seen comments on his other videos on how he sucks. i think hes pretty good. hes better than me so im looking to learn from him.

  • @RonnieJamesDio666 same with me, i still go back to practice with my technique on these videos

  • @Str8Faced I agree he did explain it well.

  • BRING ME THE HORIZON!!

  • @tomasignacioo well yeah it doesn't look the best but that's how mine is and it sounds so shaweet it's a sacrifice I'm willing to make. It doesn't make too much of a difference to me how the humbuckers look.

  • @tomasignacioo I like 2 single coils and a humbucker in the bridge

  • @valormadereal with active Emg.

  • @mathal13 not really, metal inculdes ALOT more techiniques than just changing the tuning.

  • sweet

  • asom very cool i like them

  • @aDutchInternetUser You're absolutely wrong. This is a Fender Stratocaster, probably one of the top three best and famous guitars of all time. It does not suck. However, there ARE different versions of the strat. Some are made in china with extremely cheap parts and are sold for like 50 bucks (like what you have), and some are vintage or quality made and go for thousands of dollars (like this one in the video).

  • sounds a bit like santana :D

  • I have the same guitar, but with different pickups. and the neck is not black. Fender4life

  • @Brandoninio Not all of them. Just most. There's one guitar tech making videos fro them that's better than msot of them. Most are useless thogh, you're right.

  • Do you need a special guitar to play heavy metal? Or can you do it in some way with just any regular electric guitar?

  • You can play any type of genre on any type of electric guitar. It all depends on your amp. If you're amp don't have an overdrivee, there are plenty of guitar effect pedals you can purchase to get the sound you want.

  • @Tj33rdz You can Play heavy metal with £50 Electric if you're Amp is good. But, i highly recommend a guitar with Active Pick ups or just a standard Humbucker. When i first started out playing i could get some sweet tones out of a £50 strat mainly because of the Amp i had.(Plus your amp needs a Overdrive button)

  • @EidherThaClown im also self taught, im afraid you will not be a good musician if you constantly use tabs to play songs you know. by listening to a song i could tell you what key it's in, you can't. i can guarantee you will not be able to write your own piece of music unless you ATLEAST know some chords to base your composition around.

  • @MadJack122 and that's where you error, i don't like to play music already mastered by others, its just no fun to me. I like to be original.

  • @MadJack122 you know that that their positions (frets) change with the tuning don't ya?

  • @tTatmosT yes, if you hit the 3rd fret of the low E string in standered tuning it's a G, in lets say, Drop A# the 3rd fret would be C#

  • @MadJack122 yeah and that might be a bit confusing for newbies to know...

  • can I sweep with a grampa's guitar? o_o

  • my new years resolution?

    TO PERFECT SWEEP PICKING!

  • I had a dream about this

  • how is it that people get that sound? I am trying to do avenged sevenfolds bat country. That song and this guy both have that sweep picking noise. But when i do it, the notes sound stupid. Any tips?

  • @pumpkinheadjrb

Practice practice practice. It took me a solid month and a half of practice every day to get a decent sweeping sound. Just keep at it, and don't get discouraged.

  • thats realy hard if your a guitar starter thats going to frustrate you

  • thanks for the intro to sweeping gary.

  • @louspock007 good said

  • Not Bad !

  • @MadJack122 Not true. Van Halen didn't know once.

  • hey i've learned a lamb of god song recently and a pantera song, and i've found that metal bands use three consecutive notes sometimes and play around between them in a riff. Can someone explain to me when I can use that and what scale or mode its from?

  • @axeiston That would be an arpeggio (chord split into notes) of a triad chord. They are all three notes of a scale.

They come from the scale of their name. For example, a C Major triad would be the first, third, and fifth note of the C Major scale.

Different types of triads have different combinations of notes, for example if you wanted a C Minor triad, you would keep the first and fifth of the C Major, but flat the third.

You would normally use these in solos when sweep-picking.

  • @metalfreak4677 first ones he mentions are A,C,and E. they are single notes in the A minor barre chord.

you take your favorite chords and pick the strings one at a time in a sweep motion to sweep pick. You can use any chord. if you would like to add notes to your chords make sure they are octaves of notes already used in the chord and theyll always sound good. hope i helped

  • SOMEONE PLEASE HELP!! yes i know what an A barre chord is. the guy in the video is adding extra notes that are not in the original barre chord. please comment me and let me know..... what extra notes can i use in a barre chord to make a sweep sound better? What notes should i never use to add to a barre chord?

Some one who knows what theyre talking about please help me out. I think the answer is include notes already used only in different octaves. but not sure

    HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @crAshN4L There's no such note you should never play, it depends on what kind of sound you want out of your sweep. He is basically adding the notes you usually hold with your index finger while playing barre and then doing a hammer-on on the note of the barre your other fingers are holding.

  • @crAshN4L and while going up with the sweep, it's naturally a pull-off.

  • @louspock007 Howie Simon does both :p

  • I didnt learn music theory and im bad with letters when it comes to guitar xD lets stick to numbers...

  • @metalfreak4677 look up guitar chords n learn thm dude. thats the best i can do for ya! :)

  • I feel my chances are higher being able to attend Berklee after watching this guy...

  • Upstrock

  • metal , my religion

  • @981407036x ah okay.. ^^

  • make the sweep sound with your mouth, it sound cool !

  • super technique at 0:16

  • its not hard to figure out what notes he's playing, look at the position on the fretboard and learn it by ear :)

  • @Chris4curry i doubt i'll ever learn how to read music dude, tabs are where its at!

  • Agreed, 99% of comments are worthless. Ill keep practicing, thanks.

  • @Chris4curry ha i get lost as soon as the word A minor is said :P

  • @TheFleaNo1Fan wow you really dont know anything about guitar if you dont even know what a simple A minor is.

  • how do you configure your sound??

  • Bad examples but I suspect this guy has more talent then all the folk slagging him off put together..lol

  • I CANT FREAKIN DO IT!!!

  • gotto learn play like this thx for the vid helped a lot!

  • Screw music notes AND tabs.. learn by ear/

  • how is rolling your finger on a sweep a cheat, thats a way more advanced technique for sweeps

  • fine!

  • now i can learn more about" heavy metal guitar" techniques....

  • He's not the best at it, but this actually is a well done lesson guys...

  • piece o cake

  • how long youve been playing

  • i think the "cheat sweep" is harder cause rolling your finger on the same fret on diffrent strings is trickier than moving to a diffrent fret on a diffrent string.

  • man... i would give my right pinky to sweep well.... buuuutttt i need it. (i play lefty)

  • I used to do lots of guitar sweeping but I got fed up with the likes of hendrix smashing up his guitar and making to much mess...

  • @bigkid2112 I actually found that funny

  • @gibsondanny same

  • @bigkid2112 Hahahahaha thats great.

  • thanks man that helped =D

  • I can't manage to sweep when its 2 notes at the same place, like if i play 5th string 17 fret and then i have to move up to 4th string 17th fret, I think that's hard cause I don't know how to place my finger.

  • @K1rkHammet same here

  • @K1rkHammet best thing to do is take your finger of the fret after you hit it. just go slow and practice it and once you get it try it a lil bit faster and so on

  • @K1rkHammet thats because you're kirk hammett.

  • he knows what he is talking about.. but he needs to practice sweeping a bit more :P

  • @StrikingRhinoceros Well, one would think an expert would be able to intonate any type of guitar, supposing it has the hardware to allow one to do so.

  • I'm also a guitar player when i watched his videos about guitar techniques i therefore conclude that Gary is awesome guitar player. so for me he is an "expert" maybe others may not appreciate his video but as an a musician i know what is the deference between the expert and beginner. maybe the other who didn't like this video are those not a musician. am I right? :)

  • lol i have the same guitar ...

  • cool

  • whatever - you can still learn it from his clear instruction

  • This helped me alot thanks

  • good

  • this guys acctully pretty good.

  • you don't play heavy metal on a Stratocaster, it was built for a totally different kind of music

  • @ArianeQube Have you ever heard of Iron Maiden? Strats.

  • @MTAlupyourass

Maiden use humbuckers in the strats

  • @dickasaurus69 True but they still have single coils in all their guitars as well

  • @MTAlupyourass Well, yes and no. Adrian Smith has used Jackson, Gibson, Ibanez and Lado aswell as Fender. Dave Murray also endorsed Jackson and ESP in the earlier years. Janick Gers is the only one of them that's been sticking to a Fender throughout just about all of his career.

  • @ArianeQube

Maiden and metallica used and still use them. This fender has humbuckers!

  • @dickasaurus69 I was talking about a Strat not a Fat Strat

  • hrmm looks like i just tought myself sweeping in the first 5 seconds

  • how do you sweep pick without getting feedback or hearing other strings on the guitar?

  • @Xepher54321 palm muting

  • @JiggerBooWigger who cares if he was sloppy. He still got his message across, and nobody is perfect Lad.

  • arpeggios are tricky.

  • Yes your theory is certainly right and good, but try to play more perfect so we can believe you are a true teacher. But we all thank you for your invaluable videos, of course!

  • i just need to get faster at it

  • @DropC09 I learned to sweep from this video, it was needlessly difficult and I really should have been taught 3 strings first.

  • @PrepsAndEmosSuck Exactly... he should of shown people how to do more simplistic sweeps first... plus it just makes more sense when dealing with three string sweeps because you can explain them as cord shapes played with a certain picking style instead of just the key it is in.

  • @thecoolgamer100 its many different people... its a company

  • @burris138 theres a button that does that
