  • loving this video

  • Anyone know what the Condenser mic is that's standing four feet or so in front of Mr. Lloyd? I'd love to know!

  • @bomberbadj Looks to be Neumann U-67 mic.

  • @bomberbadj - could be any of 4 (maybe more) Neumann mics -- the U-67, U-87, U-87Ai (new version of U-87), or M269 ... all look alike except for badge color (not visible). I used to sell mics professionally. All are great mics.

  • Fantastic, as an alto player it's inspiring to hear the tenor giant on the smaller horn. Reminds me of Ornette.

  • Anyone know what Billies left side ride is? I imagine a vintage K, couldn't be a vintage A...

  • i was young when i met him. . i didnt realize how much of a factor he is / was. im glad that i was given the opportunity

  • maravilloso sublime

  • They're both so very relaxed. I love the way that Billy Higgins and Charles Lloyd play individually and together!

  • This is so so great. I love it.

  • Does anyone know of any DVDs with Billy Higgins? Always swingin'.

  • amazing concept....wonderfull

  • yeahhh !!!!!11

  • Track is "Divians - Supreme Love Dance" from Which Way Is East

  • This was sooo cool. I love this video. I seen Billy back in 96. Some place he had young drummers come up and play. In la of course. I even had to go up and play. Lots of pressure! It was sort of like a drum dedication to Tony Williams at the time due to the passing of Tony. Then when everyone got there turn, Billy came on, started with one of those hand drums, looked like a tambourine, but no jingles or anything like that. Then he went on to the drum kit. This whole thing was killer! What a guy

  • awesome video man!!!

  • Sweet ...This is as good as it gets.....

  • it's not about the decade we're in. jazz is a language, and a shame we're slowly forgetting it. lazy americans. fast food, fatties. jazz was destroyed because it promoted "alternative thinking".

  • I am seriously considering transcribing this, billy is so subtley melodic....real nice

  • this is so amazing

  • I mean 7:09

you know how exact the tubers can be at ya

  • Really nice how Billy imitated and remembered that line starting at 7:12

  • billy's the man

  • Cool to see Charles on the alto!

  • thats wonderful stuff! happy new year to all.

  • Great footage thanks for posting this...WOW

  • looks like charles has a theremin back there against the wall....it doesn't surprise me cause he's a far-out cat ! also you rarely get to hear him on alto....i'm hearin' the influance of ornette for sure.....billy is so natural and organic.....thanks for this post !

  • B&W matrix 801 speakers in the back....

  • this is very very nice avant-garde composition... i love experiment

  • this is the kind of fun I'm into.

  • 7:38 to 7:52 They are like kids. great there complicity.

I just saw a BEAUTIFUL movie on Charles Lloyd made by a friend.

The film begin with the voice of Billy Higgins because he passed away this year.

    RIP Billy Higgins.

  • perhaps "tribute" would be a more appropriate word.

  • good point.

  • here is something else everybody who don't know, Charles was the out front person that helped save Billy Higgins life when he needed a transplant the first & 2nd time. A good brother who don't look for headlines, just helping to keep the legacy alive by staying in jazz after a long hiatus. a real unsung player too

  • Charles wipes up the floor with Coltrane. Go see him before you blab.

  • Stop! you embarrassing your self. Charles would be the first to say the same. he is inflenced heavily by trane as many were of his era. I have seen lloyd since he was in cannonball' & Chico Hamilton's group, I was a budding 13 year old sax player in LA. he use to teach at Gompers jr high in Watts, went to USC for his masters degree. by 1966 Lloyd was into his own group and never looked back.

  • @MrBlues2jazz

Charles lives 11 houses up from me and has for over 20 years. You are lost in time. I see him play his home venue every year since I was a kid. I have done his full Euro tour 9 times and his full US tour 13. Charles has 43 years on Coltrane. Coltrane was a master but is a has been. It's time to move on my brother.

I have seen him play with Higgins, Hussain and Harland more times than I can count. It's not the 60's anymore mi amigo... Time to grow the fuck up.

  • So What if you lived in a person's neighborhood, it doesn't make you a expert on Jazz. are you a musician? do you know music?? You can't hide behind a blanket statement as , Lloyd would wipe the floor with Trane. Trane is dead but they're still trying to figure out some of his innovative approches to improvisation. where is your proof, or theory.

sounds like you still haven't grown up. I only mention about Lloyd's humanitarian character and you say i'm still in the 60s??? break it down Betbowt!!

  • You are dumb.

  • yeah, Billy keeps swingin' !

  • yeah, Billy keeps swingin' , and Charlie too! Great!

  • Billy, was that a 'love supreme' riff' i heard?

  • at what time in the video? are you talking about the mambo sounding groove?

  • If that is his house than that is one hell of a sounding room! Great acoustics!

  • - Hey remember that.

    - I got it.

    Nice.

  • wonderful and free. thanks for the post!

  • brilliant!

  • He was very sick at this time . He died less than a year later

  • Comment removed

  • Hahahaha !! and I quote it right this time, "turn the music up" !!

  • Ahhhhhhhhh Billy... still miss you... 4am

5th St Dicks your acoustic guitar, Brazilian music & my poetry... it's times like that... like this video... that are recorded best & sometimes only, by the heart... thank you for the video... when my grandson bangs on stuff, I hear your voice... & I hand him percussion toys... thank God for you, BillyHiggins... love you & miss you...."turn up the music" !!! xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxo

  • I Love this!

    Great musicians!

  • I wish I could have spoken with Billy and just had a word or two with him.

  • it makes me feel better.

  • Straight from the heart.

  • i only sang with him a couple of times in workshop. . . but WOW. talent runs deep!

  • SWEET BILLY X

  • two absolute monsters of subtlety. the way they ride those moments with their ears so wide open. billy higgins' passing was a huge loss for humanity. but, here and in so many touches to skin and metal he teaches us how to be honest, how to pour out just enough and how to scoop up just enough to make the oceans of the heart right.

    seeing this is blessing, friends.

  • @moontriangle Well said.

  • @moontriangle

You said it! Ears wide open ... that's the lesson for me here!

Beautiful to see them playing together.

  • mr. billy higgins. always a bright light. smilin' billy. when he'd walk through leimert park he'd bring the light. show up at the world stage any time of day or nite and he'd play.

one time i was playing alto-clarinet at the world stage by myself for several hours. then billy walked in and we played a duet for about 20 minutes. man, listen: the feeling. this cat just fills up with warmth the support, love and encouragement. really he is an embodiment of joy.

  • thank you for video.

  • Beautiful stuff. Never get enough of either of these guys.

Caught Charles solo years ago at Grace Cathedral, I believe. Just magic!

  • I love how into eachothers playing they are. Effortless.

  • These Masters are super comfy in their sweatpants. No more shirts and ties for them.

  • billy higgins was a incredible drummer

  • thank you so much! real magic happening there :)

  • 1985-The Willow Jazz Club Somerville, MA. Alan Dawson lent Billy a Remo pre-tuned drumset- it looked like a toy! John Lockwood-Bass, John Medeski-Piano, the Holiday brothers who were teenagers, on horns. NBC was filming it. I sat right next to Billy all night-his playing was so quiet, but burning and telepathic. The club owner asked if we wanted them to keep playing after hours. Everyone cheered! The NBC guy turned off his camera and they played till 3:30-4:00 in the morning.

  • Well shit where is that footage? I'd love to see that.. Just to see Higgins and Medeski together would be something else.

  • I guess you could contact NBC Nightly News archives. It was on a day or two later when they featured Christopher Holiday, then a 14 year old sax prodigy who sounded like Charlie Parker. I caught the tale end of the program with Billy Higgins smiling, and swinging away. Or maybe you could could contact Christopher Holiday. Anyway, I'm sure it exists somewhere...

  • He was a far greater person , and mentor than he was a drummer .

And he was a master drummer , so what does that say ?

    I miss him greatly .

  • i love to listen as much as i love to play.

    paul.

  • why alot gyus just want to fighting here all the time?

  • I would be outside the World Stage selling fruit in-between the sets, and all because 'Abdullah Kareem (Billy Higgins) befriended me when I was new to Islam!Yes he was under-valued, but not to me!!!

  • So under valued- Billy Higgins is one of a kind- Tone and Taste! inspiring!

  • Me too....

  • When i grow old i want to be like this.

  • OUR MAN HIGGINS!!!!

  • I miss Billy a great deal.

We would play duets late nights at the world stage , but mostly talk about life .

    Rest easy Master Higgins

  • It's you.

  • is it me or do they not sound together at all?? I dunnnnnnnoo man

  • Yes thats right.... you don't know !

  • ok that did not answer anything, you jackass.

  • Like its said, you didnt answer my question, you just sound like a loser sucking up to jazz great on youtube. Get real buddy

  • Does anybody know where I can buy this dvd? It's beautiful.

  • oh yes. a thousand times yes.

that's a lectern theremin in the background on the charles shot, no? did he ever record on that?

  • reckonize peepoles!!!!

  • I just checked this album out from my local library; in the liner notes they have pics from this session and in the pics you can see the very cameras used to tape this session. I didn't realize I'd catch it on YouTube; thanks for posting. R.I.P. Billy Higgins. Real artists performing real art.

  • Thank you!!! This is so killer man

  • This sounds and feels like a long, intimate conversation between two old friends.

Thank you for posting this whitelight3.

  • Heartbreakingly, sandbaggingly beautiful...Big thank-you to whoever posted this...

  • billy K great touch!

  • Sounds GREAT!! I LOVE JAZZ!!!!

  • Beautiful!!!

  • Yeah, spring for the whole DVD, it's worth it. And the CD 'Which Way Is East' too. By the way, this was all done in Lloyd's home, and the video was shot by his wife.

  • This looks like it was recorded at the World Stage, a non-profit store front performance and teaching space in Los Angeles that Billy founded. Billy was one cool cat, that's for sure. Thanks for posting.

  • Correction: I wrote too soon. This is not the World Stage but the interior of someone's home. Sorry!

  • thank you for posting this

  • beautiful

  • jazz can sound so fresh

    this is a great video

  • ..tanks whitelight for this beautiful document..more if is possible

  • what a joy it is to see these great musicians playing in such a laid back setting. billy higgins (along with his fellow Ornette sideman ed blackwell) has always been one of my favorite jazz drummers. yeah, i've always admired his light touch, too. he's one of those drummers who plays with his ears wide open, always listening while he's playing, always ready to respond to the music with a flick of a wrist.

  • Wow, two crazy old men with wild powers. That ending is fantastic. "Hey, remember that!" "I got it." The beauty of improvisation. The bristling concentration. Great stuff.

  • it's wonderful. beautiful. that brief exchange. these men are beautiful, so much love for their music.

  • thanks for the post. more please.

  • Higgins is the man!

  • billy h. already very sick, and playing as a king. charles l., another king. a lesson, an inspiration... thank you, man, very much.

  • charles lloyd, man. He always kills me, I haven't heard enough of his alto.

  • nice, i like it. higgins is one of my favourits too. he is the kind of drummer tha can drag and never stops feelin good, and he always plays for the music. listen to the record john scofiel ´works for me´ it´s so great

  • He's not dragging, just layin' back a bit

  • How can I get the rest of this video?

  • sorry to be so slow in replying to your question. This is available in a documentary DVD, HOME about the making of Which Way Is East - the last recording that Charles and Billy made together. If you go to the Charles Lloyd web site ( address cannot be posted here, but try the obvious web

address for charles lloyd - you can email the info address and find out how to order it.

  • Billy had one of the greatest touches on the drums ever!!! Incredible sound he got!!

  • Thank you thank you thank you

Billy Higgins is one of my inspirations!

  • At one point, Billy Higgins is playing "A Love Supreme"!
