You're hand is right in the way of the part I need to see. Putting the cocking piece back in for the reassembly. Can you go into more detail about getting it to fit in? Thanks
This helps a lot, being my FR vz24 is identical to a k98 this video does wonders. But I have no hole in my stock. German engineering even takes to rifles..
I always wondered can you take off the barrel bands and remove the barrel. I have a k98k that I have had for a couple of years. I always wanted to take the whole things apart from muzzle to butt plate and give it a really good cleaning. I was never able to figure out though how to take the barrel bands off and how to remove the barrel.
I always leave it uncocked on an empty chamber #1 for safety and #2 I don't want constant tension on the main spring in fear that it will weaken it in time. Nice Mauser by the way!
Something that guys may not know, when you are closing the bolt on an empty chamber, run the bolt forward but do not rotate down, next pull the trigger and hold it while rotating the bolt down in the closed/locked position. That lightly de-cocks the weapon leaving you on an uncocked empty chamber, without the need to dry fire the weapon.
I have an older 1918 Kar98a that was slightly more difficult (The safety won't move until the bolt is apart), but your video was still extremely helpful. It was my first time fully taking the bolt apart, and after watching a couple other videos, yours was the only one I could fully understand/see what was going on. Thanks. :]
@luftwaffles1000 Because it is, it doesn't matter K98's have Gas ports unlike a Mosin Nagant. When you twist it back on it always will fall in the same spot.
The k98 Mauser or the M1 Garand does not require a scope for 3-5" groups up to 200 yards...just practice and some good ammunition of current manufacture.
I own both, and I agree, the Nagant bolt is simpler and easier to dis/reassemble, but it comes at the cost of being harder to cycle quickly. The stiff action gave rise to the phrase "the Mosin slap", where the operator literally "slaps" the bolt into the locked/unlocked position.
But don't let that scare you, it's still a fantastic rifle and should be part of any enthusiast's collection.
@DOPRDragon oh absolutely, I believe it is a very underrated design. Just think, the Russians/Soviets used that rifle for almost 60 years and that isn't for just no reason.
but yes, I have to agree the mauser is more ergonomic.
@DOPRDragon I own a 1944 Mosin Nagant 91/30 and Ive noticed its the ammo that causes it to stick some times whenever I use the cheap wolf ammo after about 30 rounds it starts getting stuck but i bought some higher end ammo and didnt have that problem as quickly
@87kekeke87 The latch for disasembly is next to the pull catch for recocking the rifle... put straight force to it and pull it will auto cock after that then switch your safety back to fire.
Are you building the entire action and everything or just making a stock? I guess I'd suggest getting your hands on a real one to see what it is exactly like.
That thing looks a bit more like the old pre WWl G98 than a K98(Yours looks a bit longer, and has a more "open" rear sight and a front blade sight. The K98 Has a simple notch for a rear sight, and a hooded foresight.)
The rifles are pretty much identical, other than the K98 is a bit more user friendly with the sights, and the G98 is older and, just in case you're planning on selling, a bit older and more valuable.
Ah. well you probably know your rifle better than i do.
I was thinking of buying a scoped 98, seeing as i am currently in need of an accurate, scoped 30 cal rifle. of course, i cold just put a scope on my old Garand. if i may ask your opinion, which do you think? was the 98 good for you, or should i just scope the M1?
@TheRandomStickGuy The Garand was never intended to be scoped when it was designed. Look at the M1C and M1D sniper model, the scope mount has to be (like these) somewhat offset to the left, or, like newer models (the "b-square" brand, for instance) be mounted rather high up to acommodate loading the en bloc clips. They are accurate, dont get me wrong, but the original design never took scopes into consideration, so you'll need a cheekpiece as well.
I have that same rifle.Today,I got distracted while dis-assembling the bolt,I forgot to put the safety on,and when I twisted the bolt to the left,it jammed up,I cant move the safety in any way. This has happened before, and I got someone to fix it.I would like to be able to fix it on my own.Has this happened to you before? If so,could you message me and tell me how to fix it?
Thanks CmpsdNoMore I replied to your message and that's exactly what happened. Never had a Mauser so I'm trying to gather a brain full of information on them. The stock I have isn't original but I'm conidering finding one of those stock plugs and putting it in mine for that firing pin spring..that's a little bear to work with!
There's a hole in the back of the stock that is specifically for taking apart the bolt. You can see in this video that there is a metal ring inside the whole so you don't damage the stock.
I had my bolt out and at some point in time I must have fliped the safety to "full safe" and now I can't get the safety to flip to any other position, if I break it down like you show here will that allow me to "reset:" the safety? any ideas? I had the bolt out before I knew to flip the safety to the half safe position that I know. It's like it's 180 degrees off of home position.
It sounds like your bolt may have been decocked while out of the rifle. I can't post a link on here, but I'll try to send you a link about how to fix that problem.
If you love to leave your rifles really clean, try using some Kano Kroil, it is simply the best at cleaning, lubricating, and loosening stuck screws... I been using it for a couple months, after seeing it discussed on in several firearms forums and it is the best........ also thanks for posting this video I've been wondering how to take the dang bolt apart.....once again Thank You,
Thank You for the step by step. I own a k98 660 1940 mauser. I want to make it for hunting deer and wild hog but I need a scope mount base!!! Can anyone help pls? Thnx frm eastern Europe!
You could buy one with the ring on the back. I would advise that, because some of the old rifles were made without the ring because it wasn't really necessary to disassemble the bolt.
thanks for this info. i might be getting one soon, and i needed to know how to disassemble it to tell if it is an original of if i got ripped off with a deactivated one. lol.
nice video. ill have to do this with my kar98 when i get home. i noticed the bolt on mine is really tight sometimes. maybe i just need to clean it real well again.

often times the mauser is compared to the Mosin Nagant.
although the Mauser's bolt is easier to cycle, I think the Mosin Nagant has a simpler bolt design...easier to take down and reassemble.
maybe I am just more used to the Mosin Nagant...idk...what are your thoughts?

is it me or at the end did you leave the rifle cocked?
you closed the bolt but that left the firing pin in the position to fire??
MadForM9950Cal 3 years ago
The Mauser action cocks when you open the bolt.
With the bolt closed and in the safe position the firing pin is blocked and will not fire the rifle.
CmpsdNoMore 3 years ago
i know that.. but do you uncock the firing pin after using it? i feel it takes strain off the spring
MadForM9950Cal 3 years ago
I don't dry fire any of my rifles or handguns.
While it may not do any damage to dry fire, I don't like to do it without using a snap-cap or some other like device.
I've kept my k98 cocked on safe since I bought it in the summer of 2006 and it still works flawlessly.
If you hold the trigger while you push the bolt forward, it will decock it.
CmpsdNoMore 3 years ago
indeed it does, i just have a ''thing'' where i like guns to be uncocked when not in use.

If your rifle gets sticky when warm (either from the temperature or firing lots of rounds), chances are it's cosmoline seeping out of the wood.
