@abernam Yeah, he used as a spot starter here and there before he was moved to the bullpen full-time. I don't remember him starting any games in 1986 so this was probably one of the last times he started a game. One of their starters at this time was injured, Bruce Brenemyi(?) I mangled the name, I know so Roger was probably filling in for him.
Good old days, I remember when Cincinnati use to play the opening game of every baseball season, I hate these money hungry men we have today, where has the purist gone.
I wish there was an intro clip from Major League Baseball: An Inside Look for YouTube to see. A piece of Bill Macatee, now with CBS, anchored this up until 1985. Perhaps those in the states of Ohio and New York were able to see this game because back then Bob Costas and Tony Kubek called this alternate region game. NBC should have put Bob Costas as the Number #1 announcer rather than Vin Scully. I guess Scully did not want to be the #2 announcer since he bolted out of CBS in 1982.
@cbaldwinjr yeah and i think the NBA on NBC would also show teams that were good and not just the bulls and the knicks and would broadcast games all year round instead of just in january like ESPN on ABCs coverage.
Is there any reason why NBC used those certain clips from :44-1:11. I notice they varied a few up in the '84 and '86 versions and somehow I have a feeling they are all from NBC broadcasts.
@cbaldwinjr yes but those games were also broadcast on NBC. I'm thinking they might have made a point to only use clips from games that were on NBC so as to sort of show how their network was there at the beginning and would continue to bring classic moments.
I saw the 1986 intro (different music, similar graphics) and the voice over hints at that.
I Believe This Was A Video Clip Of NBC Sports' Major League Baseball Game Of The Week: New York Mets Vs. Cincinnati Reds Video Open From Saturday Afternoon, May 4, 1985.
@radiodj1520 It was. I put an '85 Reds open up yesterday, but it was flagged and I'm thinking it was because I included the date in the description (it was the game where a certain ineligible player broke a certain all-time record). So I was paranoid about this one, and left it vague. I'm looking for a different '85 game to get the Reds open represented. The bigger question about this one is, how did you know that?
McDowell was the Mets starter?

... Only question I have to ask is - did Pete Rose bet on this one?

The Costas voiceover sounds contemporary, but the music and graphics make this seem dated today.

I loved both of the themes in this clip, but I'm really partial to the second one, with the NBC tones at the top...

@cag1970 The first theme is soo simple yet catchy and made me long for weekends!

The Morris no hitter and Gibson celebration were.

@Knightmessenger
I'm guessing its because they were from the year before...1984. So that's a way of modernizing the intro...you recognize the current champs.

They had two themes playing for NBC's "GOtW"?
The '82-'83 and the '84 theme?
and the announcer doing the sponsorships, he's still there, doing the announcements for "Sunday Night Football".

I like that this opening has an apparently more orchestrated version of the 1984 theme.
