What a wonderful song and so well done. We were neighbors in Anson with Ken and Olena Taylor who were teachers in Flagstaff. They met there, taught there and married there. Ken was one of those that helped move the graves to higher ground. He was quite a Maine historian and so much was lost when we lost that dear sweet man and his wonderful wife.....thank you for this song and those memories of the Taylors.

Love this song & the video. It's a lovely tribute to the families of Flagstaff and the town itself. We are from Maine and have camped in Eustis for many years and swam in Flagstaff Lake.
@wingnut4220 I happen to really like this song, it is beautiful. It tells of lifes many, many, many choices and directions.. it is a sweet, sad story, LIKE LIFE is. However, wingnut, you seem to be too too immature to even know what I am saying. I also think you need to get a life. People like you are what is wrong with this world.
As I stated in my earlier reply to you, this is a video that I created to share with the folks attending the Old Home Day Celebration in Eustis several years ago. I cannot credit all of the photos because I am unsure of some of their origins. Perhaps, if you are so concerned about proper credit being given, you could research each photograph and forward me the information and I would be happy to post it. Thank you.
Everyone ought to check out the new book "The Lost Villages of Flagstaff Lake" by Arcadia Publishing. It came out last fall and gives facts and the history as to why the lake was created. Every picture is credited and permission granted for use in the book.
Many !!! thanks to my dear sweet landlord, he is going to either buy me a ticket or get me in as a guest for tomorrow's night concert in Port Aransas Texas to see Slaid. I cannot wait. I wish you all could join me, I will let you all know how it turns out and if I can post some photos. See you all on Sunday morning, since I'll be spending the night at the landlords as well. Gotta love Good People. Thank you Josh Smith! And of course Mr. Slaid Cleeves!!!!!
My dad got these BOSE headphone's and they came wth a FREE MP3 and It hade song'sonIt ( I kept them on there because they were good song's ) and this song was on there and I was In OC MD and I listened to this sng like 32 time's andI cried cuz It's a sad song.
I saw Slaid Cleaves last Friday night in a coffeehouse 10 miles north of Richmond Virginia. His beautiful song with its haunting lyrics pays a wonderful homage to those displaced. The wonderful video adds to the emotion. After the show I mentioned the book "There Was A Land" written by folks who used to live there. I was pleased to hear that he was given a copy of the book and he cherishes it. By the way, Slaid Cleaves is a Maine boy who grew up in South Berwick.
Copyright is a definite event, and having singer/songwriter daughters, I support it.... but the above clip has brought the images to life, and to the world. That action alone should earn respect and thanks, and even gratitude. Thanks for posting the video, and ....great song!
I live just about 15 miles rom this lake so sad i actually was swimmin and cut my knee of a fundation block once, another time i was on a conoe trip i was on the main road to flastaff wich is now on a island and there were old fashioned cars that were just parked on the road and left some even with the doors open. I also sow a old gas stasion i saw a little cement and old rusty bent up gas tanks.

This song/video obviously put us on the map of Maine but I just wish people like this got their facts straight. And there is absolutely no credit given for the source of the old pictures. In my humble opinion they were photographs of pictues in the Dead River Historical Society and I'm not sure that's even legal since the museum owns those pictures. And the picture of the CMP surveyors.... that was from an exhibit of Alaska and had absolutely nothing to do with Flagstaff!!
@wingnut4220 This video was part of a presentation called Dead River Ghosts that my friend and I made at Old Home Day in 2007. I posted it so people who were in the audience could share it with family and friends - I had no idea that it would reach a far wider audience. You're right that the Dead River Historical Society should receive credit for their pictures. Without their help, there would've been no video - or song for that matter. I'll try to recitify this soon. Thanks for writing.
Nice to give credit - but the thing that Historical Societies want most is that history is preserved and shared - you have done both wonderfully well in matching the touching photos with the beautiful Slaid Cleaves song. It makes the story of the town and its people real. Thank you for doing it.
@wingnut4220 Was this song in the movie "The River Runs North" in my humble opinion that was a terrific movie. Anyone who hasn't seen it, might want to check it out.
@wingnut4220 Get a life, dude. Sadly, not every image of the trillions on the internet are properly credited. Don't busybodies like you have anything else to worry about? Make your own video and spend the majority of it giving proper accreditation to the sources- FOR A YOUTUBE VIDEO THAT NOBODY PROFITS FROM! Get a life.

if you liked this song, you'll love Slaid Cleaves....lots of these sort of bittersweet americana/alt-country/folk type songs. He's a local favorite, with a couple great albums out. The sort of albums that you have to hear as an album, not just a couple singles.
My family owned a camp down towards the base of bigelow not far from where they built a lodge when they where going to turn it into a ski resort that never happend.
My girlfriends family grew up in Flagstaff, Me. Her grandfather was the fire watch for the town, he hiked bigelow mt. almost everyday to get to his post. You can still take the trail (Safford Brook Trail) he used to get to the old fire post on top of the mountain. The foundation of their house is still there in the lake, when they let the water down you can see part of the old field stone chimney. Her family owns one of the houses that was moved before they flooded the town!
I have a place in Stratton, by the South Branch of the Dead River and love the area. As a child in the 50's, with my parents, we would go through this town on our way to, Val Racine, Quebec to visit relatives. My father worked as a woodsman with the draft horses on Cranberry Peak in the 1920's. The air quality in the area is wonderful.
I live right down the road from Flagstaff lake, and for years have been searching the net for pictures of the town, love it, would love to go back in time and walk the streets
Just got back from camping on Flagstaff Lake and wanted to learn more about the history of the town that was flooded - incredible video and song! Thanks for sharing this
This is one of my favorite songs. I first heard it a few years back on my Lexar MP3 player (it came with, like, 30 other songs), and it has remained with me since. Sadly, the MP3 player hasn't, but I happend to have found a copy of the audio file. The lyrics and sound fit perfectly with this video. This is just how I picture it every time I hear the song.
Awsome video! We camp in Eustis and some of the pictures are eerily similar to ones that I have taken up there. The church in the pictures is just up the street from our cottage and still stands today.
Well done Clive! Your very talented....
The sad thing about the whole flooding of Flagstaff Lake was so CMP could generate power from the dam. And today has not generated one Kilowatt from it.
actually, the lake serves as an impoundment reservoir. as power generation demand increases in bingham at Wyman Dam, especially in late summer, the Long Falls Dam at the outlet of Flagstaff is opened to release water down the Dead River to make its way into the kennebec flowage to support generation at Wyman.
Jeez, these Americans of the 1930's and 40's were beautiful people. "Haunting the valley, below this sparkling shore...." And their village was lovely---those frame houses with the big screened in porches. They may not have had much $, but they look like they had a damned good life. Is there some way, Twilight Zone style, to turn back the clock? Nope, I guess not. More than that village is lost to us, that whole nation is. Sigh.
great song :)
