Well I have 92Ad....it has a battery saver it cut reception every 1, 2, 4 or 5 seconds while you don't modulate or your stand by...., you may adjust it....remember this is a radio amateur I haven't hear FM commercial radio station but you awake my curiosity
I had on and off interests in ham radio since I was a kid because my dad is a ham and has been for 64 years. About a month ago I messed around with the practice exams online and then took an online coarse. In about a week I was scoring 100% routinely so, I took the test 9/13. I was issued my call sign on 9/16 and now a Tech license holder. I am studying to take the General class by the end of the year. Believe me.... the Tech test is not hard if you practice the exams and it's actually fun!
Get a license, its not that hard and it will allow you to use that radio ALOT more, Without a license something like an HT is overkill, for listening to public safty, and besides the reason why people buty that radio is to play with D-STAR, thats why its sooo expensive.
This radio is for emergency communications only. After going through hurricane Ike I'm not going to be without communcations again. Cell phone wouldn't work for days. I really have no desire to get my FCC license. i have a study manual and may take the test at some undetermined point in the future. I am aware of the law regarding transmitting without a license.
No ham operator, that is worth his or her salt, would ever tell someone to stay out of ham radio because they didn't know everything there is to know about it. Someone that posted here, if not just one person, is a total jerk and is probably not even licensed themselves. Frequencydrive, you did well. You used youtube and did great showing the problem and got it fixed by doing so. You would make a great ham!
It's cool that you have an interest in amateur radio gear. Amateur "Ham" Radio is more than just talking with friends - it's functions served to provide communications in NYC during the terrorist attacks when other services were down, provides disaster communcations during severe storms (hurricanes, tornadoes) and other vital public service functions as well. Getting the license isn't difficult, so you should consider it.
Hey lighten up on the guy maybe he wants to listen to d-star would someone tell me of a scanner that received d-star or motrbro for that matter also a lot of hams out there have xts 3000 and 5000 are they law enforcement
I dont see any problem with a non-ham owning or possesing a ham radio if they are'nt using the PTT button. Its not against the law.Maybe a cool device like that will make him want to get his ticket.
He did not ask you if you approved... Not that it's any of your business, and he did not key the radio up, and clearly mentioned that he was a scanner enthusiast.
I had it set to on so that it would break in if a weather alert tone was received! Right in the manual on page 129 it says, "NOTE: While receiving a signal (on a frequency other than the weather alert ON frequency), the receiving signal or audio will be interrupted momentarily every 5 sec. (approx.) in the case that the alert function is turned ON. This symptom is caused by the WX alert function. To cancel these symptoms, set the weather alert item OFF in set mode."
In my country (Canada), it is illegal for non-hams to possess ham radio equipment -- regardless of their intended use. Perhaps this is different in your country. I would check to see if you have a PRIORITY scan engaged. That is typical behaviour of a radio that is checking for activity on a priority channel while listening on another. Alternatively try a reset back to factory condition and see if it resolves the issue.
Hey thanks for the response. I do have a priority scan capability so I will check that out and see if it solves my problem. Like I said my scanner does not do that when tuned to the same frequency.
I do not transmit on this not because I am scared of the FCC, I just don't find it all that interesting to talk on it or to other people. Although I will if my plane crashes out in the middle of nowhere and I need help.
@frequencydrive It cuts out because the Weather Alert Mode has been activated. To turn it off do the following:
Send me an email and I will give you the steps to complete to turn it off. kc9pfk@yahoo.com You would have a hard time holding a conversation with a ham operator. I would fear the FCC the fines and jail time are steep. It is not a CB.
Hey Greg, it's not illegal to be in posession of amateur gear in Canada without a ticket. It is illegal(contravention of regulations) to transmit without a ticket though.
I have it for emergency communication. I will eventually get an ICOM IC-7000 for my truck. AND I will get my technician license soon. I am really not all that interested in sitting around talking to people on the radio. I just want one for emergencies such as when I go hiking in the mountains, etc.
