Whol build was £1800 minus 2x GPUs. Most was overkill though, like the nvidia branded coolermaster case, dual monitors, etc.

£1200 for i7 base stuff and £1300 would've done the same with a great graphics card. I had to get the "best" at the time cause i'm a nub. The rest is cheap, I'm just a fool who blows his hard earned too easily.

Its not processor speed that counts anyway, its the whole hardware package. Then the major factor is software. If the software doesn't make use of the hardware, whats the point in increasing speeds unnecessarily? Otherwice, 9GHz would be possible.

-Core i7 920 OC'd to 3.98GHz. FSB increased, cba to check what too exactly and the voltage boosted etc.

-Asus Rampage 2 extreme, with a few tweeks to the bios using a different bios flash.

6GBs of triple channel DDR3. Corsair Dominators. OC'd to around 2000mhz.

-Back to 2x 8800GTX's (OC2 version, OC'd beyond slightly) with aftermarket heatsinks. Had a HD5950, but it was faulty.

£1200ish a year ago. (but already had the 8800s)

Research, understand stuff, and tweek. :)

The CPU option on the Alienware is there, but mine runs a lot faster, due to overclocking capabilities of the Rampage II extreme mobo. Dell/Alienware have their own mobos which will not have much flexibility. This also means the RAM is locked.

1 x 640GB drive compared to 2x 1TB's and a WD Raptor Drive.

The graphics card is similar, but the options for top end graphics are their. My PC is still better than the STOCK model, for cheaper, one year ago.

Always go custom.
