I love this movie,I usually love this type of movie. In a way I wish it was set in the south, say Lousiana, I always love movies from there, since I lived there. Hallie Berry's family would be considered Creole.
That across the street neighbor is poison...the same mentality of perpetuating hatred in our young and sking them to always think color before love! Forgive ut don't forget is the best way. Let people find themselves...but I guess we are all selfish...the neighbor wants her to himself so he becomes a civic rights champion, the mother is trying to shield her out of her own traumatized past, the granma wants redemption and back into white society...ho lord save us all. Cheesy but nice movie!
For some reason I'm watching the movie and I dont get the feel that it is set in the 50's. Despite the ambiance, the characters do not exactly live up to the 50's theme. I like the movie though
I do wish DENZEL played the man across the street (protagonist black man role), or at least someone more attractive and Younger; no offense lol. It would've made the movie that much better..
@lyfe1zruff You are SO TWISTED & CLEARLY DO NOT understand the symbolism of his role in this film. Let me break it down. He's only pointing out that if her fiance was black or even had a pint of blackness in him, she would not give him a second glance. They wrote her fiance's character in to have NOTHING financially or morally (he doesnt care about getting married, or family) even to the point of making fun of the wealthy lifestyle in almost all his scenes, yet she still treats him as Gold.
@KrisHoppz88 yo save all that back to africa crap..all im sayin iz if shes already engaged leave her the hell alone and thats that..ppl kill me wit that racial purity shit..if meed and hally berry are inlove let them live n fuck how yall feel about it ..hes violatin by intruding and needs to find his own piece of ass wit his 3 fuckin kids
@lyfe1zruff It also helps his 3-dimensionality that he is a responsible/loving/secure single father, fell in love despite race, and owns his own business; yet he still isnt good enough because he's black; not only that but DARK. This movie is really good and holds much sybolism if you are WATCHING and not criticizing a snippet of a scene!

Shelby's naive. She's a black girl marrying a white man in the 50s. They're in for a rough time, and that's putting it mildly.
