On a trailing side note, the way you described bamboo shoot torture was incorrect. Victims would actually be tied over a patch of growing bamboo which the torturer would sharpen to a point, meaning that they would pierce your body as they grew higher, sort of like a "Vlad the Impaler" type scenario.
