one is not able to find the like button... I 'll send an optician for new glasses. James Alexander one of the most underrated bass players and musicians and yet he wrote history with his bar kays
Wow - I loved them in the 70s, and to see this...the ESSENCE of funk, and how the guy has the audience in the palm of his hand. mesmerising, breathtaking, true musicianship. I'm in awe. You can feel what a positive, uplifting, celebratory performance this was - the crowd must have been on that natural high for years :-)
i could not tell if that was james alexander on bass with the blond hair, if it was he did not get much air time and thats tragic being one of the original barkays that started with otis redding comming out of south memphis. he wrote alot of those jams.
What's my funky brothers and sisters,do anyone know or have a song by exBar-Kays band called Focous song 'Hotter than July" 85-86 it came out,It think that's the name of the band or song I'm not sure of either but I'm close I was corrected b4 but once again I 4got so can someone help me out thanks I'm trying to find that song Ilove that song it's funky thank SAY I CAN"T GET ENUFF OF THAT FUNKY STUFF SO RUFF SO TUFF GIVE JOE JACKSON HIS MONEY
@boogie6543 Yes..Zero in July.....thanks but the band name is Focus at least I that's what the radio dj used to call'em but u know the song thanks and HAPPY YEARS THE YEAR FOR ME TO MAKE MONEY
MAD NOTES! saw them early 80's along with maze roger gap band bootsy parliment SSF lakeside cameo. whatever happened to the funk? i miss it and im a white boy who likes southern rock.
@tumrani I too was in Aruba this week and did not miss a single show. Now it is 2010 and I am seeing this video for the first time in years. And like you the memories are flooding my mind. For that matter I was at everyone of Sinbad's Summer Jams back in the day. I was also at the Wattstax Concert in LA in Aug. 20th 1972 to see the Son of Shaft. Not forgetting the tragedy we call 1968, including the riots in Chicago @ the Democratic Convention. What a year I had in 1968...
Ben Cauly(Trumpet) was on the plane which killed Otis Redding and 5 other original Bar Kay members.Cauly was the only one to survive the crash.James Alexander was the original bass player ,but did not fly on that plane(no room).
Alexander and Cauly reformed the band...only Alexander still plays with the band.....
The Bar-Kays sho nuff (that's right...I said It!) are puttin it down! They always hit the stage goin for broke! I love this band and always have for as long as i can remember. This is what real music and musicianship should sound like! Take a lesson new school...sit back and get schooled!!!
Just wanted to say that you guys really do know old school, and this is it. I share your feelings about this vid. The Bar-kays brought Phat. Damn it is funky.
Man if you guys only new the real feelings of this music..........Twenty yrs. later and this is the sounds of yesterday....Dude this Real Music. Thanks For the memorys.
okay for the youngsters pay attention to one of the greatest showmen to hit the stage other than roger troutman (RIP) and Michael Jackson (RIP)!!!!!!!!!
okay, I stand corrected if you're saying there are only 2 members "alive" from the original Bar-Kays versus 2 members "left" in the band from the original Bar-Kays. Your statement was left open to interpretation.
Now that's what I call talent!!!!!! Unfortunately, what passes for talent today ain't even close!! FYI for all these new school acts if you have aturntable and 9 or 10 dancers onstage, that ain't talent!!!!!!!
You got that Sh** right. The last time that I saw Rick James live the Barkays opened for him at the Robin Hood Dell in Philly back in 2002. Also Larry Dodson was very cool he came to the room to meet my family and signed a few of my Barkay's CD's. Dude is so down to earth. 6 months before Roger Troutman The Barkays were with them in Hampton Va.
Sean67.... your a pimp bro... thanks so much for that... love the old school funk.....wish the youngins today would get down like this insted of rappin about dope and killin cops....kennycass !
This is what real players do when they hit the stage. PHC will be doing a couple of these songs, Cali style. And if you want Old School, this is how you do it.
