i want to paint my 04 sentra. someone really key'd the hell out of it. and it has a half a dollar dent on the edge of trunk. How do i get rid of that? is it like the first step where i sand it with 100 grit and then put putty inside? it's about half an inch depth dent...
@Xytos The point of the red primer is called a "guide coat". You spray a little all over so that you can keep track of where you have already sanded. If you have sanded back all the guide coat, generally you have sanded the whole panel.
befor primering you shoud use p400 because p180 is too corse the primer will thindown after time and will show and befor painting after sanding primer with p400 go over it with p800 this to is important
@hoffmachine Depends on your car. For my little E30 Bmw, you have to take the interior door panel apart to get at the handle. Just consult your car's schematics or manual for info.
Actually, there isn't much more to getting a car ready for paint, unless you're prepping a rust bucket. Only thing missing here are 1). After sanding, wipe the area sanded with a lint free cloth and paint thinner. 2.) Areas not primed should also be wet sanded with the 400 grit. 3.) Remove any rust with the sandpaper. 4.) Any metal high spots are going to have to be ground down with a grinding wheel. Otherwise, this is pretty much it, along with my other post here.
Finally someone has put up a video of ALL it takes to prep a car for paint. Two things I'd like to add that make a world of difference is to wash the car again, then take an air hose and blow out any nook and cranny under chrome, door handles, cracks under trim, etc. Get all that debris out of there because when the paint sprayer starts going, it is going to blow that stuff out at that point and you'll be right back to sanding again to repaint. The tack cloth will pick up any junk after.
500 is fine if that will make you feel more comfortable. It will take a little longer, but you can bear down a little more. One thing I don't like in the video here is it looks like he spends too much time sanding the primer in one spot. Primer removes very quickly.
I want to be absolutely sure. Do you sand the entire car even if there are no scratches or dings? What grit? Thanks!
