How is Lockyer mentioned in the same breath as Johns ? Lockyer has been a great player for a long time but most can name a number of better fullbacks and plenty of better 5/8. Johns was an attacking genius, hit like a forward in defence and at one time was the leading point scorer in the game. The only thing Lockyer has on him is longevity. When Thurston has the same impact in defence and can steer the Cowboys to a premiership he might then be worthy of comparison to Johns.

Joey couldn't turn a game when he was behind and was inconsistent so is Lockyer. Wally Lewis however was 10 steps ahead of his opponents, wasn't the fastest, toughest or strongest player and played through the most brutal era of rugby league, with the big ass heavy ball and none of the shitty fitness training johns or lockyer do. wally was so good he got a standing ovation from NSW and always stood out well above the BEST EVER players that he came against. QLD for the last 6 years has had the premier players such as Lockyer, Thurston, Smith, Inglis, Hodges, Slater, who are always in test teams where as NSW has had good players but the selectors, until this year, have not let any combinations build because they keep changing the team. That's the only reason QLD has one the last 6 years.

How is Lockyer mentioned in the same breath as Johns ? Lockyer has been a great player for a long time but most can name a number of better fullbacks and plenty of better 5/8. Johns was an attacking genius, hit like a forward in defence and at one time was the leading point scorer in the game. The only thing Lockyer has on him is longevity. When Thurston has the same impact in defence and can steer the Cowboys to a premiership he might then be worthy of comparison to Johns.

Locky and Joey were both named in the team of the century. Joey wins on the basis that he played in a Newie team that didn't have half the Aus team in it like Brisbane did. May I also add that not only was this Joey's best ever origin performance but it was Thurston's FIRST YEAR of being a starting club halfback LET ALONE origin. Perhaps you should at Joey's first year of Origin: 1995. Lost the unloseable series to Qld team robbed of its stars. JT has the best origin record of any halfback. Joey couldn't turn a game when he was behind and was inconsistent so is Lockyer. Wally Lewis however was 10 steps ahead of his opponents, wasn't the fastest, toughest or strongest player and played through the most brutal era of rugby league, with the big ass heavy ball and none of the shitty fitness training johns or lockyer do. wally was so good he got a standing ovation from NSW and always stood out well above the BEST EVER players that he came against. @luke231089 he only played 1 and bit of club seasons and not as great as his origin but he was still best on the field, but consider that when you compare to how long andrew johns played when the big clubs became the main game over 2 states. though in the local brisbane comp he was outstanding. as for the the greatest club players, I'd say reg gasnier, he was in the great team from the 50s-60s and won about 8 or 9 out of like 12 grand finals in a row with them.

Biased QLDers. Not hard to find. Lockyer is a very good player, but cannot compare to Johns as he was freakish, not consistent. Lockyer is day in day out reliable that does not make him the best. Look at any sport golf, soccer or boxing. Tiger Woods, Maradona or Ali they were freaks in their own right, but not always consistent. Freakish players are tempermental. Lockyer is too clean and proper not a freak. Johns has been voted player of the century, so deal with facts hickboy!

@stinkychesse The intensity of the game when John's played is far inferior to todays. Locky is old, yet he still manages to pull it out every game. It makes you look like a fool to compare them, they are both greats for their time.

lewis is the most overrated rl player in history. did nothing at club level, got sideswiped on both kangaroo tours (the holy grail) and got swiped 7-3 at soo by none other than king brett kenny when both at five eight!!
it has been obvious for years theso called immortals is rigged by the inner sanctum
kenny is the best no 6 the game has ever seen and the poms who arent beholden by the politics of oz rightly rate him thus where he made both sterling and lewis look silly there 2! greatest!

@bismuth333 Good point. In the Australian Rugby League Team of The Century, Lewis was chosen ahead of Kenny and Meninga ahead of Steve Rogers. Lewis and Meninga were both talented and physcially strong but you mainly knew what was coming when they had the ball in hand. Kenny and Rogers could do things on a football field where you couldn't believe your own eyes. They were freaks and I would put them both in the all-time team ahead of Lewis and Meninga.

Lockyer is one of the best players ever, he will be an immortal, but saying that he isn't on the same page as johns, Johns was the closest thing to a complete player the game has ever seen, he could change a game on his own. while lockyer will be an immortal and has broken more records then anymone else at test and origin level, and will have the most games by the end of the seasons, Johns was a more complete player as he was a stronger defended, they immortals but Johns is an all round ledgend.

I've seen Johns play many a time & yes he's the great attacking freak you see here but every single time except for one occasion he was the best defender too.best defender by a mile.
the one occasion was Geoff Toovey at Marathon who put Harrigon flat on his backside half a dozen times.
