I don't get why people always harp on the 2005 version. It's a movie, and had limited time, whereas the different series had more time to get into the story and characters. Keira Knightly was big at the time, which is why she was cast. The father in the 2005 version, however, was I believe the best father version because he was so snarky with his lines. I think 1980 gets overshadow a lot by these arguments about the movie.
Everybody's always looking to be "subversive" and oh so rebellious. I really think you insult humanity when you say P&P was some kind of subversive book. It's a perfect story. Not everything has to be badass for modern so-called artists to somehow relate to.
by the way I am 14 and I have been obsessed with it for a year now, and have read the book several times and watched every adaptation (the 1995 series 15 times), I just love it too much!!!!!!!!
I remember when this documentary was broadcast in 2005. I was 17 at the time, and then I remember a few weeks later going with my then girlfriend to see the film with Keira Knightley as it was released just then. I wasn't nearly as impressed with it as I'd hoped. I'll stick with Austen's original text and the 1995 version!
I love the Pride And Prejudice book its my favourite book ever since I was 16 now I am 22 and I still read it.And when I saw Colin Firth as Mr Darcy and Jennifer Ehle as Elizabeth Bennet in the 1995 version when I was 6 I was in love with it I remember watching it and my eyes were glued to the telly I didnt want to miss a minute of it.I still love watching the 1995 version on dvd.
I saw the 1980 version when it came out and since I was 19 at the time I could relate well to the young women characters in the novel. The 1995 version is wonderful but the 1980 dialogue is much closer to the book. The 1940's version is silly in comparison and I disliked Keira Knightly's Elizabeth because she seems to have a permanent smirk on her face. She looks more like a servant with the awful brown drab gowns, no jewelry/bonnets and a terrible hairstyle. Everyone has a favorite version!
I see that many literary scholars believe that the Bennets are middle-class. The only member of the Bennet family that is from the middle-class was Mrs. Bennet.
Anyone knows where I can find the black and white miniseries?? online or DVD.
I would love to watch it!! I think that the 1980 mini is closer to the book, I love that mini, but I also love the 2005 movie, and I love the soundtrack!!
i loved the 1995 version the best. i did love the 2005 one and bride and prejudice as well. also i have watch a 2003 version which is pride and prejudice but a modern version.
Thank you for posting this! Gave me some entertaining insights into the filming of the different versions... and, actually, I think it's going to help me on this essay I have to write on the book this week xD Win-win!
I have only seen the 95 & 05 versions but I have seen clips of others & read the book. I must say that I absolutely LOVE the 95 bbc adaptation. It' great & really brings the characters to life.
I recently watched Lost in Austen for the first time & completely disagreed when on the extras the director claimed they didnt think the younger audience knows the story, & thats why they wanted to twist the dynamic of the story. I'm 18 & have loved p&p for 3 years. It cant be bettered & appeals to all!
I first read the book when I was 15, coincidentally a little bit before the '95 film was shown on A & E here in America. When I read it I didn't realize it was about to be on tv but was so excited when it first started. I then read all of her other books but still P & P is in a league of its own.
Thank you for posting this! :) And, by the way, did you know that the narrator of this documentary (Emilia Fox) actually played Georgiana Darcy in the 1995 adaptation? I was so surprised when I saw her name, but who better to narrate? :)
Thanks for posting these clips. I've just finished watching the 1995 Pride and Prejudice and enjoyed every minute of it. Both Jennifer and Colin were perfect. These clips you posted add to my interest in the series.
I think that Andrew is gay!

AND! If you like 2005 P & P you must watch Persuasion - the version that starred Amanda Root. It's much shorter but a very beautiful film.

They keep trying to make Austen modern, when she wasn't. She was NOT subversive, at /all/.
