Many great female vocalists have recorded this in the past and even recently. But after listening to all of them, Annette Hanshaw owns this one and she recorded it in 1929. It's the notes she sings, the phrasing, her voice, the attitude, the band's haunting relentless march through the melody. Annette -- you are one hell of a jazz singer.
just had a taste for moanin' low and found this accidentally, the year my Mom was born, she passed last year ---- glad i found it ! thanks for posting. this is my kinda music..............
I got this 78 & others including Lee Morse "I'm one of God's Children" in a house clearance in the 80s. No interest by anyone in this stuff back then, but I loved the bluesy vocals regardless of their age. Now with CD reissues restored to the world again these artists are deservedly known again. Ruth Etting I hear was my Granddad's fave (born 1897) though.
The way they'll return in a non-jokey way (like Tiny Tim made the era) is some film or advert using the music as "Button Up" showed.
I KNEW there was something MORE to this woman;s carrer than the facts are showing~!!! She sounds SO much like Ruth Etting it's uncanny and I consider myself an expert on Etting;s recordings. Yet there was something "odd" about why her career seems to have been stymied??? She recored all of the top songs of the day but something is just not right. I can;t believe Etting knew what was going on. Anyone have any real documentation of what went on. That Synder was a REAL DIrt Bag......
@potentialavalanche Not all the sound effects from Sita Sings The Blues (the footsteps when he walks on Sita, the crack from the horse reigns, ect). The movie probably just made the original sounds fit the actions onscreen like any good movie would.
@Floweramon Sorry, didn't finish my first sentence: Not all the sound effects from Sita Sings The Blues (the footsteps when he walks on Sita, the crack from the horse reigns, ect) are in this.
Oh, definitely one of my favorite Annette songs. She's so gorgeous, and her voice...God. I bet her career would have ended on a much better note if she'd realized just how amazing she was. Poor girl...
I mean she could have gotten a few more albums out, made some more money, and perhaps escaped that nasty Ruth Ettings and her gangster husband. What she did was fine and well for her, but all I'm saying is that if she believed a bit more in herself, she probably could have many more hits than she already does. Sorry if I offended you...? O_o
This song was written for Libby Holman by her rehearsal pianist, Ralph Rainger. It's been recorded by Billie Holliday, Lena Horne, and Barbra Streisand, among others.
This is one song maybe where her High Low phrasing doesn't sound right IMHO. It might grow on me, but of course Annette was the best.

If I didn't look so damned different from other women, I think I would have loved living in these times. Annette makes it so beautiful.

She is the best and most under-appreciated vocalist of the era. Shame her career was so short!
