  • 16 people must be LSU fans

  • This one is for real, I already bought the dream. I'll make this time---ready to cross that fine line. Decaon blues.

  • Saxophone Has only One "A"..........

  • ROLL TIDE

  • Comment removed

  • They spelled "whiskey" incorrectly. It's Scotch Whisky, not Whiskey.

  • To be young and bullet proof again...

  • My girlfriend says SD is too cynical and cryptic for her....----I say I feel sorry for her....

  • SaxOphone, that is.

  • Smooth Song, Not so smooth responses... Have another glass of scotch.....

  • @BaddBrad61 Agreed. I wish people would just mellow out. This is the perfect song to help a person do just that! It wouldn't matter what he was singing about or what the lyrics were, this is one chillin' song.

  • This song is about losing at gambling, particularly roulette. The life of a gambler.

"Die behind the wheel" and "learn to play the saxophone, I play just what I feel" (The saxophone is a term for the board that you bet on next to the roulette wheel.

  • Alabama has a couple of popular songs. This song and Lynyrd Skynyrds Sweet Home Alabama. Im sure there are more but those are the 2 songs that come to mind immeadiately.

  • Best Song Ever. Love SD!

  • Alabama is killing LSU,,,This means Okla. State should get the AP Poll..##ONE!!

  • They Call Alabama, The Crimson Tide...

Because they are going to Roll Over LSU!!!!

    Roll TIDE!!!

  • @StelyDn you understand this song is mocking AL, right?

  • @KYBluesKY yea...

  • @KYBluesKY No it's not, jealous-ass.

  • such a great song that has a smooth feel!! Love this song!!!!

  • just kool the dan !!!!!

  • Awesome music! Steely Dan plays some of the best music I've ever listened to. And the fact that the music is more than 7:30 long makes the song more enjoyable.

  • love this so much

  • I never used to like Steely Dan all that much, but I guess growing up really does do a lot.

  • THIS is about Football????????

  • @silvernail6 You're wanting Decan JONES.

  • @silvernail6 there's references to football teams, but as in all music, the song is open to interpretation

  • @dinkhead1 Wake Forest

  • @Jazzelegance k bud

  • @dinkhead1 This interpretation is pretty simple, especially for the Dan. They've got a name for the winners in the world (Alabama Crimson Tide) and he wants a name when he loses (Deacon Blues). No way to try to twist it against Alabama. When this song came out, Bear was kicking ass.

  • Here's another one from Colette the Night Bird.105.7 WTLC

  • You're kidding. This song is about a football team???

Could've fooled me. Oh well, still love it!

  • "Reference to The Wake Forest "Demon Deacons," whose football team struggled for much of the '70s, winning just 7 games from 1972-75. Same time, the U. Of Alabama was a football powerhouse, losing just one game in each of their next two seasons their famous under coach Paul "Bear" Bryant. Alabama is known as "The Crimson Tide": "They got a name for the winners in the world And I want a name when I lose They call Alabama the Crimson Tide Call me Deacon Blues" (Ben - Savannah, GA)

  • @QuaintTaint histroy was repeat it's self Bama is a powerhouse once again and Duke is a sorry ass team once again.

  • @QuaintTaint Very good QT. That is exactly right.

  • My favorite of all of Steely Dan's songs.

  • @dipafella its a Great song. although id be hard pressed to pick a fav. also... i always thought they were in a class all their own. did you?

  • Excellent Music.

  • did he go to Duke U ... lol awesome song....

  • Smooth like the city on a Wednesday night. Open bars and locals; soft music no cares just lay back and feel it man.

  • auburn

  • Thank you for the video explanation of the Deacon Blues reference, never got that. But what's it got to do with the rest of the song? Anyway, this one always makes me melt.

  • now THIS is REAL music...

  • One of my favorite Steely Dan songs. "I want a name when I lose"

  • Becker and Fagan's ability to make something so cerebral and jazzy sound so catchy will forever be unparalleled.

  • Steely Dan was one of a kind, a pop jazz band with songwriting that has never been done with LA reference lyrics. The used horns, like Sly did and Earth Wind and Fire. This is music that you will never forget and always be attracted to.

  • man hole

  • one of my all-time favzzzzz!!!

  • Don't know why I just decided to hear this great song tonite, Got it looping as I watch the Steelers-Ravens game. Yeah!!!!!!! Love life :-)

  • If you play rock this is great introduction to playing jazz. It contains minor and major sevenths, augmented and diminished ninths, sixths, augmented and diminished minor sevenths and thirteenths. If you can play this at original tempo, I will salute you as a player.

  • @nman48 music talk!

  • i always listen to this song with j&b on the side it keep me relax and analyze my lotto numbers.

  • this song is a jam my brother turned me on to this god rest his soul he really knew good music

  • this is good highway cruising music when the sun is setting or its night time.

  • When I'm sad or discouraged, I like to listen to this song. It reminds me of why I study so much and work so hard and it puts all of my heartaches and heartbreaks in perspective. "This ones for real, I've already bought the dream..."

  • It's nice to see that SO many people are that loyal to Laundry Detergent.

  • @rproulx Yup, ROLL TIDE. =)

  • @XxFidgetxX Fuck the Tide.

    Dirty motherfuckers.

    Go HOGS!

  • @fittingly Dirty motherfuckers? Didn't one of your players just get ejected from a game for ramming a defenseless player on a punt return and then jumped around and beat his chest like he did something special as the guy lays injured on the ground? Also, call me when your team does something. How many years in a row have we beat you? Oh, right, five.

  • just because he cried when he wrote this song doesn't mean i won't sue his ass for playing too long. good thing i like your song, donald.

  • Nice to have the lyrics and the background info. Never new the background info but loved the tune. Always liked Steely Dan. Too bad they rarely toured...or did they? Kinda like Alan Parson Project. Did they tour much?

  • @farelane460 Saw them do Aja and the Royal Scam back to back nights in Cincy 2 years ago. AMAZING! and they are actually on tour right now, heading to New York before they finish in Australia.

  • AAAAhhhhhh.... reminds me of my college days at maryland...tackling 400 pound gorillas on saturday games then tackling 21 credits during the week....whew i think i will have a scotch....make that a bourbon....Thanks Don

  • stewly dan forever rest in in hell biber and gaga can suck a fat 1

  • I never get tired of Steely Dan. Takes me back to fantastic days in the 1980s. While all my friends were listening to souixie and the banshees, I was was listening to steely Dan. This music and particularly this song, is in the fibre of my bones.

  • Pure quality. Every song was designed superbly.

  • Used to play this so much -amazing how the words never go! Still love it and the band mmmmmmmmm

  • awe the good ole days.

  • Best Song Ever Written Ever

  • @WillBTMay Na..Just your favorite song..Even at the time of it's release it only reached #19 on the charts..In a sense..It never was a winner..Never reaching #1 except in the minds of losers...self fulfilling prophecy. You are what you eat bud. remember that! ROLL TIDE!!

  • @WillBTMay Maybe not the best, but definitely a special one. It brings back memory of my first stay in the US back in 1980. I discovered Steely Dan through this album and I listened to this song on my record player a gazillion times after getting back to France .

  • What can i say , yeah its got to be one of my favourite songs , i was 12 when i first heard it , its 100% .

  • I heard a version by Tom Wopat that was unforgetable. However I am wondering if this is the same Tom Wopat as in the Dukes of Hazzard ?

  • how can "do it again" be such a great song but the rest of his music such awful dross

  • love it love it!

  • They call Alabama The Crimson Tide.RTR. They will be playing T-TOWN August,20,2011. Roll Tide Roll.

  • alabama 2011 national champs baby. deacon blues all over again for every one else.

  • Love listening to this when I blaze out. :)

  • I love this track, which is from the truly great Steely Dan album "Aja". Also, check out "Great Pagoda of Funn" from Donald Fagen. Play these two tracks back to front and try telling me the world isn't suddenly a better place!! :)

  • cool

  • It's a really masterful song musically and lyrically. Steely Dan and those mu chord progressions, whew! On their own page. Nothing like em.

  • Roll Tide

  • Fuck, I cry like a wuss everytime. FUCCCKK.

  • I'll learn to play... The saxophone! I'll play just what I feel!

  • @dreadrocksean I'm a girl lol. BUT I'M STILL SAYIN IT

  • Respond to this video... I cried when I wrote this song, SUE ME if I play too long!

  • This is my favorite song in the world.Thats all I got to say about that.

  • Boring.

  • @albelnoxroxursox Don't shout, I'm sleeping.

  • @claudiobenassi85 Since there isn't an italicize option on this site, I simply used all caps to emphasize the fact that everybody here SHUNS YOU. PLEASE DIE. That way your sleep will never again be disturbed. If it was then that would be creepy.

  • @albelnoxroxursox Shht now.

  • @claudiobenassi85 Youcould have easily avoided this by not responding at all, or, even better, not attempting to dis an awesome song/band. Too bad.

  • @claudiobenassi85 Yes, if you don't like this song then you do have a boring life.

  • Comment removed

  • @Crimson13Tide If you use logic, it's quite the opposite.

  • a victim of laughing chance..sounds familiar..lol

  • Sounds like shit from the MANHOLE

  • I love music like this. I like the lyrics i just wish i could understand the meaning.

  • I was born in 85 and I grew up listening to Steely Dan because they're one of my Dad's favorites. After watching this video, I never thought for such a "smoothe" sounding band that they had some quite hostile lyrics. Makes me like this even more! "And die behind the wheel" never knew it said that. haha

  • i grew up on this music and love it all the time everytime and im finally going to see them live in toronto! gunna be groovy as hell!!!

  • This track is stunning, I have no idea why, and I don't want to know why, but it seems to distill certain experiences and a certain 'time/era' into pure sound, and make it timeless and accessible to all. Any songwriters out there will no doubt 'hear' that the emotions generated the harmony here, and not the other way around. True art.

  • I love finally seeing a youtbe video where every post is about the music and how great it is, now stupid arguments over whose screwing whose mom or some stupid shit like that. I think the best way to tell that Steely Dan was a great band is by the fact that alll their fans, young or old, just came to appreciate and share their love for the band's amazing talent.

  • Donald Fagen And Walter Becker Were the best studio Front men. The rest of the

sit in's Like Lee Ritenour, Michael Mcdonald, Lary Carlton Made the sound

  • 7 people died behind the wheel.

  • I sued Steely Dan.

  • Not only did us older generation get to experience some much great music like this but my god man! I'm sittiin at my computer surfin youtube. • I sat chillin around 3am in a truck last summer on a first date smokin a doobie with this song playin on the CD and fell in love with the person sitting beside me who loved this sing as much as I do.. *sigh*

  • RIP Roger Nichols

  • Are there any bands around today that achieve this blend of musical sophistication and techical virtuosity with a pop sensibiliyy and chuffing brilliant lyrics? Probably, somewhere grossly unappreciated and without a recording contract,. One thing you don't so many of is Steely tribute bands, they are unique and a cultural landmark in modern music.

  • @Happysundaze try The Cool Band...not so much jazz but they got songwriting talent

  • ahhhh...makes me wish I could have went to Wake Forest in the '70's..... I bet the girls were incredible.....I can now only imagine.....

  • "this brother is free, i will be what i want to be"

  • Love Love LOVEEE Steely Dan

  • I LOVE STEELY DAN!!!!

  • I wouldn't have told that......................

  • It's spelled saxophone :)

  • Scotch Whisky shouldn't have an "e" in it.

  • And saxophone shouldn't be 'saxa'

  • I love Steely Dan's production so much that it does't really matter that I'm not that fond of their music. Absolute genius.

  • i second the growing up in the seventies .. best decade for rock & roll ..If anybody finds any lost brain cells floating around out there please return them to their rightful owners .. HINT ..Quite a few are mine ! ..thanks for the quality upload
