Ironic that the AL's Crimson Tide thinks this song is for them when its actually mocking them for being winners. Deacon Blues is the theme of the underdog loser. "Drink Scotch whisky all night long and die behind the wheel" Great freaking song. I love it.
@BaddBrad61 Agreed. I wish people would just mellow out. This is the perfect song to help a person do just that! It wouldn't matter what he was singing about or what the lyrics were, this is one chillin' song.
This song is about losing at gambling, particularly roulette. The life of a gambler.
"Die behind the wheel" and "learn to play the saxophone, I play just what I feel" (The saxophone is a term for the board that you bet on next to the roulette wheel.
Alabama has a couple of popular songs. This song and Lynyrd Skynyrds Sweet Home Alabama. Im sure there are more but those are the 2 songs that come to mind immeadiately.
Awesome music! Steely Dan plays some of the best music I've ever listened to. And the fact that the music is more than 7:30 long makes the song more enjoyable.
@dinkhead1 This interpretation is pretty simple, especially for the Dan. They've got a name for the winners in the world (Alabama Crimson Tide) and he wants a name when he loses (Deacon Blues). No way to try to twist it against Alabama. When this song came out, Bear was kicking ass.
One of the best things about this song is how the last two minutes goes into this incredible guitar rhythm and sound of the intermittent saxophone wailing away even into the faint end of music he's still kicking ass......wow, I love a good saxophone sound...very strong and personal expression in music.
"Reference to The Wake Forest "Demon Deacons," whose football team struggled for much of the '70s, winning just 7 games from 1972-75. Same time, the U. Of Alabama was a football powerhouse, losing just one game in each of their next two seasons their famous under coach Paul "Bear" Bryant. Alabama is known as "The Crimson Tide": "They got a name for the winners in the world And I want a name when I lose They call Alabama the Crimson Tide Call me Deacon Blues" (Ben - Savannah, GA)
Thank you for the video explanation of the Deacon Blues reference, never got that. But what's it got to do with the rest of the song? Anyway, this one always makes me melt.
Steely Dan was one of a kind, a pop jazz band with songwriting that has never been done with LA reference lyrics. The used horns, like Sly did and Earth Wind and Fire. This is music that you will never forget and always be attracted to.
If you play rock this is great introduction to playing jazz. It contains minor and major sevenths, augmented and diminished ninths, sixths, augmented and diminished minor sevenths and thirteenths. If you can play this at original tempo, I will salute you as a player.
Wake Forest in Chapel Hill North Carolina has Deacon Blues now! Carolina beat them on Saturday. :( That was a sad day for the Demon Deacons! They also lost to The Virginia Tech Hokies 2 weeks ago in Winston-Salem.
When I'm sad or discouraged, I like to listen to this song. It reminds me of why I study so much and work so hard and it puts all of my heartaches and heartbreaks in perspective. "This ones for real, I've already bought the dream..."
@fittingly Dirty motherfuckers? Didn't one of your players just get ejected from a game for ramming a defenseless player on a punt return and then jumped around and beat his chest like he did something special as the guy lays injured on the ground? Also, call me when your team does something. How many years in a row have we beat you? Oh, right, five.
Nice to have the lyrics and the background info. Never new the background info but loved the tune. Always liked Steely Dan. Too bad they rarely toured...or did they? Kinda like Alan Parson Project. Did they tour much?
@farelane460 Saw them do Aja and the Royal Scam back to back nights in Cincy 2 years ago. AMAZING! and they are actually on tour right now, heading to New York before they finish in Australia.

@WillBTMay Maybe not the best, but definitely a special one. It brings back memory of my first stay in the US back in 1980. I discovered Steely Dan through this album and I listened to this song on my record player a gazillion times after getting back to France .
I love this track, which is from the truly great Steely Dan album "Aja". Also, check out "Great Pagoda of Funn" from Donald Fagen. Play these two tracks back to front and try telling me the world isn't suddenly a better place!! :)
@claudiobenassi85 Since there isn't an italicize option on this site, I simply used all caps to emphasize the fact that everybody here SHUNS YOU. PLEASE DIE. That way your sleep will never again be disturbed. If it was then that would be creepy.
I was born in 85 and I grew up listening to Steely Dan because they're one of my Dad's favorites. After watching this video, I never thought for such a "smoothe" sounding band that they had some quite hostile lyrics. Makes me like this even more! "And die behind the wheel" never knew it said that. haha
This track is stunning, I have no idea why, and I don't want to know why, but it seems to distill certain experiences and a certain 'time/era' into pure sound, and make it timeless and accessible to all. Any songwriters out there will no doubt 'hear' that the emotions generated the harmony here, and not the other way around. True art.
I love finally seeing a youtbe video where every post is about the music and how great it is, now stupid arguments over whose screwing whose mom or some stupid shit like that. I think the best way to tell that Steely Dan was a great band is by the fact that alll their fans, young or old, just came to appreciate and share their love for the band's amazing talent.

Yeah and I got a Droid that streams HD that I can voice command search. Comon man really? Ok man bring on the holodeck. I think i'll stick around for another 20 yrs.
@gladdad101 Calm the c aps Jethro.. Since Im not inbred , dont fuck my siblings and dont live in a trailer park or play the banjo with my toes.like yourself..... Ill stay in Civilization....you stay in your swampland trailer dwelling and DONT COME HERE EITHER!!!! .. The indoor plumbing will only confuse you.
I sat chillin around 3am in a truck last summer on a first date smokin a doobie with this song playin on the CD and fell in love with the person sitting beside me who loved this sing as much as I do.. *sigh*
Are there any bands around today that achieve this blend of musical sophistication and techical virtuosity with a pop sensibiliyy and chuffing brilliant lyrics? Probably, somewhere grossly unappreciated and without a recording contract,. One thing you don't so many of is Steely tribute bands, they are unique and a cultural landmark in modern music.
i second the growing up in the seventies .. best decade for rock & roll ..If anybody finds any lost brain cells floating around out there please return them to their rightful owners .. HINT ..Quite a few are mine ! ..thanks for the quality upload
When music was music this was a hit! My god, how great is it to hear 'living lyrics'! Not one wasted word as the "Dan of Steel' spins a timeless tune...Man I love it. When I was a kid I just took great music like this for granted. Groups like, the Doobie Brothers, CCR and so many others, that I thought would always be around to enjoy. Boy..was I wrong! All I can say is this will always be hit for me!

I love Steely Dan's production so much that it does't really matter that I'm not that fond of their music. Absolute genius.
