This is the first time I've heard this song and I consider myself the biggest ELO fan there is.....having said that now I will say this......I STILL haven't heard a song by ELO that I don't like!! I don't think there is a bad song from this great band!!
@eightiesguy62 If you were the biggest ELO fan, you would have heard this song when it came out, like ME! : ) You are correct though. There isn't a bad song from this band yet!
@pg1171 I know....I'm ashamed that I had never heard this song until just a few weeks ago but I am one of the biggest ELO fans there are!! HONEST!!! :-)
This was a really weird album for them. Took me awhile to like it. No singing by Kelly Groucutt that I could hear. But I finally ended up loving it becasue of the great songs.
@speedofsound21 I respect your tastes, but to minimize McCartney? Come on, get down to earth. Paul McCartney is the greatest non-classical songwriter of all times. He wrote more #1 than any other artist. Jeff Lynne admired McCartney a lot. Lynne is a genious, extremely talented, but Paul McCartney is THE god of music.
I really don't remember hearing anything from ELO after 1980 on the radio, it's a shame because they still did great music into the early 80s like they did in the 70s.
@CreativeCritisizm I actually got into ELO as a teen listening to radio in the '80s with songs like Calling America and Rock and Roll is King... so they did have some hits, but you're right, definitely not as many as in the '70s. Then again, you still did hear Jeff Lynne... he was producing and writing hits like Tom Petty's "Free Fallin" so that might explain why there is a lack of hit songs from ELO during and after the '80s.
@jeng3000 Yeah, that, and he disbanded ELO in 1986. I know there are some out there who swear that JL "quit" or "left" the group to join the Traveling Wilburys, handing the reins over to Bev Bevan to carry on. That's just a fantasy that some fans have created in their heads. Truth is, BB approached JL in 1988 to see if he might like to restart ELO. After JL told him "no", BB decided to restart the group without him. ...
@no1elofaniknow (con't) ... Legally, since JL still at that time owned 50% of the name, BB couldn't call the group "ELO", so to make a long story short, he called it "ELO Part 2".
@no1elofaniknow BTW,there was talk about a "Legacy Edition" of this CD..A 2-CD set, but, nothing as of now..will there ever be one,I wonder? Would be nice to know!
Jeff Lynne was an inspiration to me as John,Paul George & Ringo..I agree with you guys that he is definitely one of the most underrated song writer/Musicians ever !
Okay, having never listened to ELO before, I have to say i'm damn stunned. It's very very rare for me to like more than one song from a particular band or artist, and this is number ten.
It has such an unnatural, far away feel, but still so melodic and smooth, not jarring. I love it.
I really don't think that Jeff and E.L.O. was ever underated. The only thing that pissed me off back then was that we could never do any of their songs because of there complexities.
Or are you talking about Camelia Kath, Keifer Sutherland's ex? If so, I don't know if she's Canadian or not, and I haven't heard or read anything about them tying the knot.
sorry softayl, but that's not George Harrison on guitars. Yes, they worked together later on The Traveling Wiburys and Jeff produced a few of George's albums, but this isnt George, its Jeff and some synthesier magic to create the track. No complaints on the song tho, it is excellent
this is a gorgeous song..i hear the complaints about lack of real strings..but at the time of this record, an orchestra wasn't cost effective..hence the reason synthesizers were employed instead of faking an orchestra by tons of overdubbing.
Listen closely. That would be George Harrison playing along with the boys. Later on, George,Jeff Lyne,Roy Orbison,Tom Petty & Bob Dylan cut a CD & called themselves The Traveling Wilburys.
Even though I was disappointed when ELO abandoned the orchestral arrangements, I always thought the tunes Jeff wrote during this period were underrated.
Yeah, Jeff Lynne is a genius for sure. But he cant reach Bach in any way. J.S. Bach is the greatest genius of mankind. Even compared to da Vinci, Einstein or Vincent van Gogh. Although, Jeff Lynne should consider a "all of ELO" compilation (including half done songs and things like this), cause for sure this is some of the best music of the 20th century.
Bach was great, but better than Mozart? hummm, i dunno about that one. although all the people you mention are, in fact, some of the greatest minds the world has ever known.
space song... In my trip to Area 51 (Groom Lake) Roads. I Parked on the extraterrestrial highway (it was at night, 2 more or less) and there was a beautiful starry sky. Just I put the song "Take Me On" and it was magical.
Huh? I'm guessing you are asking what is the rockingest tune from Secret Messages. That would be Four Little Diamonds first, then Rock and Roll is King, then Secret Messages.
@endrizo my friend i have an article in guitar magazine its like 15 years ago they metion anthology, also they mentio a lot of peolple of been a beatle or contributo to their worklike geroge martin , pet best , billy preston among others hoever JEFF LYNNE ITS CONSIDER THE LAST BEATLE in my opinion there is no musician that has acomplish his dreams like jeff, been with their inspiration the beatles its epic and i like more elo then the betles( but thats my personal opinion)
I love this song. I've always assumed it was about John Lennon's spirit flying across the universe. The line "somewhere far away" sounds just like Paul McCartney, and the lines "I see it all below, I know which way to go, I see the afterglow" are pure John, doncha think? I know - so what. But it always makes me think of John flying free among the stars. Corny - ok.
I really adore ELO. ,\Check out "I Need Her Love" on you tube and remasted by thebunyipfarm for a real treat. Simply breath-taking. Why this song never made the Top 40 charts I will never know.
