Hi, I have OS X 10.6.8 running Logic Pro 9 with Digi 002 interface. Since upgrading to Snow Leopard and downloading Digi CoreAudio 8.0.3 standalone (having taken Pro Tools off the system) I am left with only 10 inputs and 10 outputs. I used to have 24. Of course I need 24 so I can access input 16 and 17 for digital input for microphones through a Neve pre-amp. Please can you see what I have to do to bring back the 24 inputs, thank you.
I gotta say, this mod makes a pretty huge difference. I've used a stock 002 and now have the BLA 002. This deathrape dude can say whatever he likes and offer as many free soloutions as he wants, but at the end of the day - BLA turn a hobbyists piece of kit into something that gets great polished sounds a great deal easier than a stock 002. For someone wanting to get a Pro Tools interface with HD sound without the HD pricetag, BLA are doing great stuff...
I apologize to anyone who has had to suffer through this "debate". My intent was to come to the defence of a small company that is doing something unique and all together helpful for the recording community. I hope I composed myself respectfully, but the whole thing turned rather childish.
With that hopefully over and done with, anyone interested in the BLA mods and whatnot, look into Big Al's interview with the gentleman in this video. You can find it on the Mixerman Radio Show.
con'td is that much better all you would need is a workhorse mac with lots of cpu power and you got something really close to pt/HD. Pro tools and avid are great but do we really need to give them so much cash just to run something decent (if a home studio is the setup your looking for) think about it man!
Until you hear a complete mix and different types of instruments/transients tracked through the modded 002/003 you can't really judge its quality from some standard youtube shitty quality vid lol the mod is for LE users who dont have the cash to jump into hd IMO and another video said there's close 20db of dynamic range that's insane! probably more than the digi 192 after the mod. Something you got to consider is that the new pro tools 9 has delay compensation even for LE so if the signal path
This is the most retarded krap propaganda butt-lick non-review ever. The modded unit is just louder. So save your $ & turn up the unmodded 1 - DUH! & not just a little bit, it's like 10db louder - so what. It's not an amp, nor is it even desirable 2 have it OUT OF SPEC much louder than it is supposed 2 B!
@Deathrape2001 It's not really intended to be a review, as it is being presented by the guy that does the mods.
@dante75915 You are right, you would get the same, and in some cases better, from a good converter with a nice preamp. I'm thinking of getting a BLA Sparrow MkII for my set up down the road rather than the mod.
@MaxSplVideos 1 of the best converters in existence is the Analog Devices 'Soundmax' surround chipset (tiny $7 motherboard chip) commonly found on 'junk throwaway obsolete' PCs U can find on the street 4 free, as well as many new ones. It has no clock, but locks 2 the CPU, so there is no jitter, & is totally flexible with sample rates as it doesn't purposely cripple N E usability there, like so many 'after market' systems do. B sure 2 use the native drivers from AD, not 3'rd party ones.
@MaxSplVideos Oh by the way - EVERYTHING from Apple is GARBAGE, as they exclusively use Realtek & other JUNK that FORCES resampling of everything 2 48Khz multiples, DESTROYING the smoothness of every CD or CD rip, or N E thing else other than that which is @ multiples or divisibles of 48.
@Deathrape2001 Haven't used any Apple hardware... and didn't know they made any, computers and whatnot not withstanding. Unless you're using your computers AD I don't really see how it would effect the sound of a recording as you bypass a computers AD/DA completely when you use an interface.
As for the Soundmax chipset, how did you get it to work with your DAW? Are you soundcard based? Or wired your own AD? May be something worth looking into if I can get it to work with my interface.
@MaxSplVideos Fuking retard. Pretending that a an apple computer or laptop is not 'hardware' only makes U sound retarded. Apple=realtek chips=forced resampling=$hit sound. I gave U a tip. Use it. Because U R an idiot, I will repeat the tip: Soundmax chipset with original (not 3'rd party) drivers =)
@Deathrape2001 Oh come on now, no need to be rude. When I refer to hardware I mean recording equipment (recording interfaces, preamps, ext), which is why I was wondering why you were bringing up Apple in regards to this video. I have never been in a studio that uses an Apple computer for AD, unless you count those who use a Mac pro with an HD or MADI set up, but again that bypasses any Apple hardware effecting the audio itself.
@Deathrape2001 Also, in regards to the soundmax chipset, it is an interesting tip but somewhat useless in context of recording as every version I have found online is not only an integrated chipset, they all cap out at 16/48 and I record most of my work at 24/96 or 24/44.1. It sounds like we are talking about two very different things as the more I look into this "tip" you keep giving me, the more it looks irrelevant to my needs, and those who would be looking at a video about a 002.
@MaxSplVideos U R so fukin' right - recording @ 24/96 is SOOOO important, especially since DVD is 48, & CD is 44 HAHAHA U remind me of the clowns on 'pro audio' forums who I informed the Behringer EP2500 sounds wonderful & is very cheap. They all go off on INSANE irrational tangents trying 2 pretend they 'need' 2 spend a fortune on overpriced krap 2 get the same (or worse) result.
Ever actually LISTENED 2 an 'obsolete garbage' Dell Dimension off the street? Of course not - U just troll.
@Deathrape2001 The sample rate debate will more than likely never end, but running at 96 does help effects and VST instruments, though you are right that DVD and CD use less. Bit rate on the other hand is much less debated as having a higher dynamic range going into the box really does improve the final product once it is dithered down. Also note I said I record often at 24/44.1.
I had a Behringer EP2500, good amp.
I never said "obsolete garbage", so please don't misquote me.
@Deathrape2001 Also, I would give a listen to this weeks Home Recording Show. One of the guys had a chance to test out a couple really high end converters, and they have a discussion about converter qualities and the mentality of blaming the converter. They're one of the last things they recommend upgrading, but they do play a part.
@MaxSplVideos Bla bla bla - another slave-tard mooing their endless deadbrain cow krap about how they 'need' a $300+ 24/96 breakout box bla bla bla Please forgive me 4 informing your idiot azz how 2 obtain fab pro sound quality every bit as good as top dollar equipment, for FREE simply by using the proper chipset, such as the AD found on 'throwaway' Dell Dimensions =D I am so sorry. Now go flush your $ down the toilet like a good boi.
@Deathrape2001 Did you even read my last post? The point I end with is that it is not recommended to upgrade your converters blindly.
If your set up gets good results all the power to you, but I need more than your free option has to offer for my line of work. Have you compared it to anything top dollar? Somewhat curious of your experience with other converters.
Also, if we are going to continue this debate could you please speak like an adult? I am finding it hard to take you seriously.
@MaxSplVideos What's that U say deaf clown? U say "I must have the 'latest greatest' sample rate that is not even supported on the media I will B mastering 2 - oh wait, U R not even gonna' B selling your krap, U HOBBYIST! HAHAHAHA Yet U claim U 'need' a higher sample rate than CD ROFL!! OMFG HAHAHAHA =D
Go on & torch your dolalrs. WTF do I care. I'm just here stating facts, such as the fact a FREE AD chipset, without 3'rd party drivers, sounds BETTER & syncs better than most 'pro' devices.
@Deathrape2001 Once again, I ask if you read my last post where I have no mention of sample rate. You seem to be taking this personally and I am not sure why as even you say you don't care.
I ask once again though, what converters do you have experience with that have brought you to the conclusion that the soundmax sounds better than a pro device? Being a hobbyist, I am no expert as I have only tried about six in three studios, but I would like to know which pro devices you compared it to.
@MaxSplVideos Y R U still talking, troll? Oh yes, because U would rather sit here attacking me 4 giving U good, $ saving advices that will give U IDENTICAL OR BETTER sound quality 2 the fancy expensive 'pro' stuff, but 4 FREE. Oh excuse me - so sorry, troll. How dare I give U good, useful advices. Go flush your $ down the toilet like a good little debt slave =D Next U will tell me we must edit images in 128 bit color, if the end JPG product is 32 HAHAHA retard
@Deathrape2001 Your contradictions are just to amusing for me to stop. You avoid my questions that if you would answer would give you some credibility.... then you continually attempt to insult me and follow it up by calling me a troll? When did I ever attack you by the way? Have we come to the point that disagreeing with someone is an attack? Though, I did poke fun at the way you are conducting yourself, but you have been using less profanity so maybe it helped.
@MaxSplVideos Hey there troll. How about U tell us how we need 2 buy every color of paint @ the art shop, instead of red, green, blue, white, & black =)) Kind of like we must edit our video in 32 bit color when making a DVD (they're all 24 bit). Get a life, clown. Maybe U should get some real friends instead of wasting your life pretending U must waste your $ on krap that doesn't enhance the end result. God you're pathetic.
@Deathrape2001 It's not just "volume" or "gain". It has "definition" and "realism". There are to many aspects in sounds that could represent "volume" at the end. For example, the sound has no phase problems. The sound has headroom. The sounds runs through a clean analog path. If you had heard the explanation given by Matt, you would figured out that. These are the main aspects of a "high end" or "hd" sound.
@gearwire I heard everything you were talking about. I even turned up the second one and they both still sounded different. However, I wonder if you can get the same result with a good converter like an Apogee or an Avalon. That sound was warm and accurate and very detailed in the first one, I heard the sonic difference.
Can an Mbox 2 be connecetd to a mixing desk? I was wondering if there is a way of expanding the mbox simultenous recording ability by intergrating a mixing desk with several signal inputs. The LE can record upto 32 tracks its kinda weird having to be able to record only two at a time via the XLR's or DI's...am not very techy so be precise in ur suggestions please....thanks
The Mbox can only record about 2 analog inputs at once, I heard that you can also use the SPDIF input to add 2 extra digital inputs but still that would only let you connect your mbox to an analog mixer with 4 channels, if you want to integrate a mixer that has more channel strips you would have to get the didi 002/003 which have 8 inputs and are expandable to 16 via lightpipe, In my opinion you should upgrade to a 002 and go from there, they go for 380-420$ god bless
I think thats crap!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, lies, I have a DIGI 001 it sounds amazing!1, I tested and compared TASCAM US-224, Yamaha Waveforce XG, Audigy Platinum 2 ex,all they sounds great, and the DIGi its wonderfull itself, not need for stupid modifications because modern pro interfaces just need a good exprienced producer and musician...

This video probably fools most people who don't have an accurate meter. But your trick is easy to spot by watching a meter like the Dorrough 280-A. In this demo the modified 002 is simply louder than the un-modified unit. The output of the modded unit peaks at 0dBFS, whereas the un-modified unit peaks at -2dBFS. Also the modded unit averages are 3-4dB hotter. That's reduced dynamic range, brotha! This seems like a 'loudness' modification disguised as a 'sonic improvement'. I don't buy it!
I'm getting my box back in a couple weeks or less. The team is hopefully in the middle of diagnosing my unit's problems right now. I''ll write up my thoughts on it when it gets here!
That's what AD/DA converters do for your sound! it seems louder with better conversion but really it's just clearer and more detailed. he had the volumes matched.
Nope having different Pre's and converters make a BIG difference. I recently tried the 002 pre's and converters compared to the focusrites saffires pre's and convertors. The Saffire wiped the floor with the 002. I wouldn't mind one of those mods though...
your drummer should use a click!

Even with such LoFi audio I can hear the difference. It has sweeter high end and defined low end.

Why don't you match the volume of those two takes, so we can actually listen to the difference, and not the volume difference...
