I apologize: my smartphone keyboard is very small. But Chambers admits he lied to the committee (in his book, witness). It is lame to keep saying that chambers was a depressed psychotic because you don't become an editor of a national magazine by being a delusional nutball. Communist infiltration is simply part of bringing about their Marxist revolution. Why is it that we must insist that it has never happened? Think about it.
The comments here keep citing books written by people who obviously have their own interests in one side or the other. The best source on this subject is to read the congressional records of the trial. After reading pages of double-talk on the part of Hiss, I have no doubt that he is guilty. On the same token, it isn't right that Chambers is let off when he admits he lied ab
In his early years, Nixon was an honest and decent man. His moral lapses came later. Nixon's paranoia was probably exacerbated by the Hiss case. To see so many prominent liberals defend this obvious traitor and go to such unethical means to defend him could make many reasonable people drift into a siege mentality.
What is strange is how some people still strike out with statements on the order of, "Nixon was as big a fraud as [C]hambers." Hmm. Can you hallucinate?
Nixon admitted to a reporter that the Pumpkin Patch was a hoax designed to cause people like Albert to "hallucinate" into thinking there was some smoking gun here. In fact the pumpkin papers contained nothing that incriminated Hiss and instead some were blank and others contained information that anyone could have obtained. Nixon and smoking gun. How ironic. Nixon was big fraud and now we all know that to be true. Chambers of course was a suicidal depressed mentally disturbed fraud
NIxon was as big a fraud as chambers. Now we know there was nothing on those films that any high school kid could have got his hands on. Nixon is a crook, duh.
FAT , DUMB AND STUPID IS NO WAY TO GO THROUGH LIFE--read a book dumbshit...Hiss/Rosenbergs all guilty , guilty , guilty...Not even revisionist liberals can change this fact...
keep that head in sand and don't read any proof...
Wow, severe name calling. I am not fat, (you?) not dumb (stupid would be redundant, but hey, consider the source). I have read many books on the Hiss Case. Witness was a fantasy written by a psychotic. His stories are delusional and he is a paranoid. Venona doesn't mention Hiss at all. You need proof not name calling to have a decent debate. I'll start: Chambers tried to commit suicide because he was afraid he was going to be caught in the libel of lying about Hiss, you?
Rondaria , read Treason (ann coulter) best summary of the Hiss/Chambers case...A letter to my children is quite moving(witness)...I first read when I was 15 --fantastic...also read Venona(decoding soviet espionage in america)1999...It proves from these recently released soviet papers that Hiss/Rosenbergs and many others were communist working for the soviet union......and still liberals just scream McCarthyism....
Yet, you haven't read anything to disprove your view. How about Friendship and Fratricide by Meyer Zelg. This will prove Chambers was a suicidal depressed psychotc. Zelig is a doctor, Ann Coulter wears black mini skirts on tv and spends the whole time touching her hair, come on.
Chambers translated a pretty good novel by Albert t'Serstevens (1885-1974): The Sentimental Vagabond (Rinehart, N.Y. ed, 1930). A fine road trip through Italy. t'Serstevens created a phalanstary when 18 with a bunch of kids friends in 1905-1908; he wrote aanother novel of this "communist" fiasco". Maybe a reason why t'Serstevens is now kind of banned by french paris editors.
I listened to the unabridged audiobook of Witness, and I both believe Chambers and wish I had even just a semblance of his character.

When you don't have anything substantive you go after niggling trivialities in the opposing argument.

I'm just finishing Chambers' autobiography, Witness. It's about 800 pages and I skipped some of the transcripts, but it's well worth reading.
