this was again when class elgance talent ruled unlike today. When ladies dressed lie ladies and geltlemen acted like gentlemen. Again unlike today hick music filithysicking bongle fromthe jungle rapping noise also crap
This little gem was on the charts when I just started collecting music in 1967 on, get this kids 45 rpm records, what a fun uplifting song never to repeated as they were a one hit wonder. Super classic. You made me so very happy. Thanks for posting!
Another song I played on my weekend radio show in Lansing, MI while attending Michigan State from 1968-72. I am saddened to hear that one of them had passed away and my condolences to ShellyBean. This song still makes me tap my feet and sing along.
Aaahh...this will forever take me back to Christmas time '66 and the simple beauty that was chidhood. Even though our home was destroyed by fire that Christmas Eve night and we lost everything (no fatalities) the music at that time only reminds me of the beauty and not the bad. I'm so lucky that this music was part of my childhood. Thanks for posting!
My parents bought this 45 in 1966 and played it on their Ford Philco stereo console many times. I was 12 at the time and also loved this song. Thank you Shades of Blue and for this posting.
such a wonderful group and wonderful song hello old friend we meet again. After so many year,s such a talanted group. What a pity music is not like this anymore the 60,s were the best time for music as were the 70,s.
I saw your Mom & Dad on the Dick Clark Caravan of Stars tour. The Shades Of Blue were great live. I've had the album since the sixties. I still listen to it. You should be proud of them. They were one of the best acts on the Dick Clark tour. I always considered "Oh How Happy" one of the best songs to come out of the sixties.
ShellyBean1966- congratulations on being the daughter of a very talented couple. This should have been a #1- it was in many people's book. I love this music. Thank you Nocaro, for posting this song.
Oh..and for the record...my parents don't have a racist bone in their bodies...but they always took it as a compliment that people would assume they were a black group. The black groups could SING...they had SOUL..and plenty of RHYTHM. Being compared to that was an honor and meant that people must think they had true talent. Who wouldn't take that as a compliment?? Besides..talent has no color, right??
Linda and Bobby from the Shades of Blue are my parents. :) I'm so very proud of their accomplishments! Right after I was born, the song hit the top 100 and they started touring with Dick Clark. I stayed with my dads parents when they toured. My mom loves reading all the wonderful comments and although my dad passed away 5 years ago, I know he would be THRILLED as well! He loved music and The Shades of Blue was his heart. Thank you all for your kind comments...I'm a very proud daughter!!
@ShellyBean1966 I hope you didn't mind, but I've pasted your comment here to my Facebook Page. I have been amazed at the many comments from the sons and daughters (and grandsons and granddaughters) appreciative of reading the feedback from the artists involved with many of the recordings I have posted. Even several of the artists have taken the time to comment including LLoyd Price, Bobby Rydell, Dion, New Christy Minstrels, Lenny Welch, et. al. If I were you I'd feel the same way.
@Nocaro Hold up. Hate to play the devil's advocate here, but have you actually clicked on this person's profile? There is absolutely no way the person in her videos is 45 years old, and the nature of her videos suggest that I call BS on her claim here. Also, she is African American... wasn't Linda and Bobby white?
@ShellyBean1966 By the way, I'm sorry to hear about your dad. I had no idea. Thank your mother for me for the many hours of listening pleasure for not only myself, but the fans of this YouTube Channel...Lanny (Nocaro on YouTube).
@ShellyBean1966 that is sooooooooo wonderful ....I will be seeing The some what newer Shades of Blue in concert Sept 30th 2011 in Toledo, Ohio they are still wonderful sadly your Dad isnt around to make it even better but we love it when they come to Town .....Oh How Happy was such a great song
@ShellyBean1966 This is my favorite music, its beautiful.I listen to it everyday when I drive. Thank you so much!!! Your dad RIP God be with you all again thank you.
need to make this a 4 minute song. i thought it was curtis mayfield but, i woke up with this song in my head because i am happy i received 400k from my dead mother and father"s inheritance. let kingdom come. i got mine.
@pPaddyBer Sure it might be infantile to you but if u never saw this group until now it is a surprise to find out they are white. Will I not like this song because of it, hell no I still love it. Now if you want something interesting "How's the weather?"lol
I am 56 years old and this is my first time seeing this group and they are white. These guys and girl should be proud of making a song that fool me. A great song for the ages and white people some of your do have some soul.
R-U kidding me....I was there.....NEVER thought them to be a black sound track of any kind! You must not have been listening to the radio that did Detroit! Holy Rat's...this is a white thing, kids. You couldn't differentiate soul at the time from this stuff? Tops and Temps and Supremes? This sounds even remotely close to that??? Did you think they were Beach Boys or Beatles also??????
@TheSiamesecat007WHAT" let me see maybe you should do some studding before you put you foot up your Ass. Many people thought was a black group singing this song even the group is aware of that and they proudly admit. that much. I met them and they would never have anything to do with your Sarcasm and your Hatred there are plenty reasons people thought they were black ! (#1they were a Motown group (#2 A Motown artist wrote the song ( #3the song has a R&B sound you ButtRag (OK KIDS" GOT IT)
Wow, thanks Nocaro for the background on this great song. I knew Edwin Starr wrote it but the neat thing is that the band was given a chance to get on the radio and they did in a big way as this song is played to many a weddings rightfully so. Short, sweet, simple, one hit wonder, dreams do come true! Thanks.
life is sweet long after im gone i hope that beauty and pure joy continues forever

Not surprised they were Detroit, Blue-Eyed Soul written all over this record.
His range at 1:58 says it all.
I never get tired of listening to this great record, then (as a kid) or now as a man.

Great track, but doesn't the tune rather resemble Haydn's for "Deutschland Über Alles," the German National Anthem?

When this tune comes on a guy should grab his woman and dance her around the kitchen for a couple of minutes.

I don't know why, but I had always thought they were a Gospel group looking to crossover-- perhaps the sound is as Gospel as it is R&B.
