  • Your gerbil is gorgeous! What is that color called? I've never seen it before.

  • Gerbils thump when they're startled, to warn about danger, when they want to mate, or, in my opinion, to communicate with each other. Just because a gerbil thumps doesn't mean you're being mean to them or they're mortally terrified.

  • Aw he's a tap dancer

  • hes just tapdancing

  • well i dont think that was so fun...that gerbil was very afraid they do that when they are afraid...i accidentaly moved to quickly one time at the gerbils cage and he warned his brother by doing that...so dont laugh its not fun...sry

  • gerbils thumbing when they are stressed... or when they are exited :)

  • My gerbils used to this not only when frightened but also when excited on occasions they at same time would wag there tails side to side.

  • hes tap dancing duh.

  • You're arousing your gerbils!

  • Our 6 gerbs don't do this much; only when it's thunder storming outside in the spring/summer/fall season, quiet in winter :D

  • LMAO!!!! I have two gerbils. One paid little attention at first, but my second was IMMEDIATELY alerted!! It looked dead at me then looked around everywhere! The first gerbil paid attention by the third time I played the vid. But now that I think on it, the first times I played it, she was awfully still...

  • my gerbil does that a lot 2, anyone kno why they tap their feet?

  • @xxoosonicxxoo I don't know if it's right, but I heard that they to this to warn other gerbils. Like when a beaver splashes his tail on the water or when prairie dogs bark.

  • @xxoosonicxxoo They do it for two reasons. To alert the other gerbils, causing them to hide or thump back in reply. And to tell the others they are sexually aroused. Causing little or no reaction. Humans can't tell the difference in thumps, only gerbils.

  • @QBFOJustin i think I found the difference. the arousal thump seems much faster than the warning thump.

  • @gerbilPROJECT I disagree. With my gerbils, the warning thump was faster and much more louder. A very HARD slamming thump. The arousal one was less hard but they keep doing it MUCH longer. One of my gerbils would do it for what seemed like hours!

  • @QBFOJustin hmm... maybe it's different with different gerbils.

  • ther gerbil is doing this as a warning call to other gerbils - it means its scared poor gerbil!

  • wow, he/she's a bit fatty??:D but very cute..my gerbils do this often in the morning, when i change position in bed xD

  • hes been watching to much happy feet

  • Such an awkward mating call. I'm glad humans don't have to stomp their feet before they "breed" or when we are scared haha

  • Hahaha! So cute. Our gerbils do this, too. In fact, they heard me playing this video and joined in. Funny! Your gerb is adorable!

  • Lol! Gerbils are awesome :D I have two cages with two gerbils each in my computer room, and whenever I move too fast, it spooks them. One will end up thumping, and that'll make the others chime in.

  • Sarah`` Riley is my hubby remember xD .

  • Noo, Sammy was! =D

  • I got the name wrong, haha!!

  • This is Sammy in the video :D

  • Your gerbil is awkward.... but all gerbils are.

  • Mine do it all the time, move too quick and off they go lol

  • Haha yeah! I feel bad when I accidentally scare them like that, so I usually end up taking the top off their tank and talking them into coming back out from their underground houses.

  • hes probs DEAD SCARED! they do it when they r nervous!

  • Nah he was fine. When something really spooks him, he runs inside his house and thumps.

  • Wow, Sammy is bigger than i thought! How old is he now? He looks about around 2 years maybe?

  • He's a little piggy xD You're right, he's going to turn 2 in March =D Riley used to be the bigger one, but he's been having tooth problems. So he doesn't eat so much anymore, and is back down to a healthier weight.

  • they do that wen they think there in danger my gerbils do it wen the cat or the dog comes up to the cage

  • interesting.. Bunnies do the thumping thing. He dosent appear to be scared. I would just think he is communicating with you. Cute as heck. lol. Animals sure tickle us. Bun waves Hi

    bunnies rule!

  • I love my Sammy =D My bun thumps only when he is extremely upset or angry, which is very rare for him. Hi Bun!!

  • That is amazing!! Is this little fellow your new pet? It's like he's tap dancing!!LOL!! Thanks 4 sharing!!

  • Nope I've had Sammy since he was a baby, and got him about a year and a half ago =) Usually they thump when they're afraid or when they want to mate. He usually does it because he's scared, but I didn't see anything that would have caused the fear. He's a funny little guy =)

  • He's funny in a very cute kind of way!! Sammy is a cutie!!
