"I came not to bring peace but a sword."Jesus said family members would be divided because of TRUTH.There is no fence to sit on when it comes to truth. "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No man cometh to the Father but by me."(Jesus).
I have an honest question: What purpose do statement of faiths or church covenants serve other than risking interpretation of God's Word? Shouldn't we, as the church, expose ourselves to the pure Word of God only? Is it sufficient to say "I declare my faith in the Word" and to address any dis-unities with literal scripture. Defining something that was authored by God (who is not the author of confusion) is pointless, we are mere man. We are called to study, live and present the Word. Help here
I'm not sure what you mean by "risking interpretation." I assume you mean eisegesis (reading into the text), because exegesis (bringing out truths in the text) is used by Jesus as well as the NT writers.
In a perfect world, everyone could read Scripture and understand it. One problem is that people twist the Scriptures to their own destruction (2 Tim. 3:16). For that and other reasons, we create creeds, interpret Scripture, and systematize theology so that it can be better understood.
Scripture is always above those creeds, interpretations, and systems. They should reflect the text, not add to it or exceed it in authority. They are in no way a substitute for Scripture, but instead a vehicle which helps Scripture drive into the garage of understanding.
Thanks for the response! By declaring statements of faith and covenants the fact is that Scripture is being interpretted. I've read some truths corresponding to the reception, learning and revelation of Scripture to man and found that it doesn't come by interpretation but rather by God Himself and according to His timing. Would you consider these and re-address? 1Co.2:5-16 Ga.1:11-16 Mat.11:25,16:13-17 2Co.4:1-6 (I have a hard time giving snippets b/c context is essential).
rob21dog I'll address it without looking at the verses you give. 30000+ denominations all think they have the Truth as given by God? plus all the other ones we don't even know about and not including down to the individual level. -- not sure what sure what you mean by declaring statements of faith? Declare to whom? or what? every person I meet I talk to them about Jesus, But I don't see that as a Declaration.

Something I forgot to mention:

Another good upload man. Better to be divided in truth, rather than to be united in error.
