I bought this item, 2 miles max on flat ground in wooded/ residential area, in high power mode, don't waste your money getting the fcc license for 85 bucks for 5 years, the low power gets half that range.... 27 miles is an insult to everyone's intelligence that didnt do thier home work likeme "I'ma suker for believing whats written on the packaging.
can someone answer a question for me. I never knew the reason why people can only hear you on channels 1-7 but 8 - 15 no one can...how do I use these other channels?
bought them brandnew at a fleamarket for 5$ and got Varta rechargeable 900mAh AAA's for them. I paid 14$ for eight new ones. So in total i've paid 19$ for them and they work great. Looks much better and are much easier to use then the ones in the video. They are waterproof to :)
the real range on any FRS / GMRS store bought is maybe a mile and a half at the most. Get your self a Motorola HT1000 from surplus at your fire department and THEN program it to FRS/ GMRS. then you will have at least a good 6 miles.
its a scam by the company when they say 20 + miles or w/e; the max allowed range by the fcc for frs - ch1-6 is 2 miles max for gmrs ch7-22 in a handheld is 5 miles they just add in to 20+miles to sell more but makes no diffrence so when usein it in the city the max ull get is 1 mile ive tested it in the city and got under a mile, krazy scam right , and they get away with it, plus they lie about no fees , u need a license to use gmrs channels! 5 year license around 85$, the world is corrupt!
@F0rtyFive actually you have to test it on two mountain peaks. i just bought some 16 mile range, and they advertised on the back of the box 1 mile in urban areas. 8 in the wods/lake area for like camping or whatever, and 1 in urban. i've also found that they don't care if you go on say, channel 22 unless a trucker or someone else like that is on it.
have u tested it on mountain peaks.. its not that people r not gona care if u use it its a law a true law if u want to operate on gmrs with a handheld ,base station, mobile, anything its a law to have a license , just like fishing
:P no i can't say i've ever tested it on mountain peaks. you got me there. i do know however that urban areas have lots of things that can interfere. standing under power lines will cut your range in at least half. i have tested that. also, yes, it is a law, but it's kind of like how they won't care if you go fishing in a pond behind your house without a license. i also know the risks. every radio has it's own s/n # that they can identify and see who bought it. even if you pay with cash.
@F0rtyFive Dude you are mixing up facts. The FCC restricts power of the handset for the family band (500 mW) not distance. You can get 20+ miles depending on the device in optimum conditions. Of course it will be way lower in urban environment. Did you actually bothered to see the complete review before talking crap?
Car manufacturers also establish EPA estimates for cars. Those are usually under ideal conditions and not when you're racing up a mountain at red line rpms.
@pjdaprinz i know they restrict power, if u want to illegally modify your radio do as u wish, are radios used more in urban environments or are they used more in optimum conditions way out in a desert or something? of course its not perfect everywhere u go so it was based on urban areas, clearly the majority uses urban/highway areas etc.
so u like to talk about cars, are most cars used in optimal conditions or are more cars racing up mountains red line rpms? im sorry if i offended u officer :]
@F0rtyFive No, you didn't offend me, Fact is that those devices can send over distances up to 25 miles, even if only from mountain top to mountaintop. Fact is that it's possible, so you can't say that's it's a scam.
For para gliders the 25 miles are pretty much dead on.
They even advertise up to 25 miles *in ideal conditions, so it's not even false advertising. Customers just have to do their homework and research because you can never take advertisement serious.
@F0rtyFive Its because of interference look on the back of the box................It will be its max amount of range in like a lake or something and you dont have to buy a licence for gmrs, its more likely that you'll win the lottery than get busted by the fcc for using one of these without a licence.
Cobra makes some good shit.. used their CB's back in the 70's and 80's. back in high school, late 70's, everyone had a CB in their car and truck.. now they use instant messaging etc.. blehh.. YES, people used to actually talk to eachother, and meet other people! who would of thunk!??
If u want to buy Walkie Talkie, buy Motorola or Midland....they are little better then Cobra brand.....But They all lie about Effective range of radio..I have 27miles range midland radio..but range is more like 2 miles in city,,,,
25 miles? Hahahaha, yeah right! And the USA will not be banging heads with Iran anytime soon.
