Here's my question for all the hardcore fans out there. With all that has been left out and this film still being as long as it was, what would you guys have suggested? 5 hour movie? Trilogy? Or Cutting out other specific bits from the finished movie?
@TheVetoSkreeemer ... Heard the squid only came in the end and pretty much did exactly what Dr. Manhattan did in the movie. If it came in from let's say half way and really is one of the most complicated fiction characters to explain then mate, I don't blame you!
@TheVetoSkreeemer Wow thanks man! And I thought the fanboy out cry was over nothing for a long while! Well you know what, I'm gonna buy the comic and give my due respect to Alan Moore. I'm still puzzled though as to where did the squid come from? From what ive
I find this quite interesting. I know the new ending was that dr. Manhattan teleported to earth with silk spectre, but I don't know what the giant squid was about. Anyone want to fill me in on what I'm missing out on?
@SuperDarkserpent A lot, Snyder not only changed the ending of this comics , but made other changes as well. Some of the relevant stuff he omitted or changed is this: 1) Ozzymandias,: Had a whole issue in which you could explore and understnand his motivations , this was left out of the film leaving the character with little substance. 2) Night Owl: On the original comic he was a nerd super-hero, like Blue beetle or the sixties Batman, he had some fighting skills
@SuperDarkserpent but could never take 20 guys or so like it happend on the film , he would have been crushed. 3) Rorsach: the pacing on his psychological interviews is quite different and disturbing.Leaving the shrink a total mess. In the end the changes are nt so much , what changed is the tone, there is little drama, the acting is stiff or overacted, the film lacks the depth wich the original comic had.
lolwut. So you're saying that something like cocaine is illegal because the corporations are making the drug then giving it to the "drug lords" to make a dollar? Nice
Read Brave New World, that will give you an idea as to why drugs exist. Your scenario obviously exists in certain areas, but it doesn't apply to all areas. Cigarettes and alcohol are your legal drugs, sugar and caffeine. They're controllable. Cocaine isn't :P
Just seen Alan at Cheltenham science festival with my 2 teenage boys, his views have opened their minds, just hope they don't try the psychoactive drugs.
However, I think the films made out of his graphic novels actually helped made his works more known to the public... I for instance would not have read V for Vendetta if it wasn't for the movie... I was never much into comics but I loved the movie and I'm the type of person who believes that the written (original) creation is always better than that on the film so I've read it despite my difference in preferences and it was so so SO brilliant!
@MaxDamageProductions just saying that shows how corrupt america is, no matter who is in charge there's always going to be corruption and veiled fascism, at least now, as new leaders appear, america is becoming more tolerant of other races and gay people, stop living in the past and persecuting gays because you are a closet homosexual

I`m perfectly comfortable with my sexuality. The reason I don`t support gay marriage has absolutely NOTHING to do with my personal sexuality preference. Period. Dot. The end.
@MaxDamageProductions yes they deserve it, if a man wants to marry a man, they should be able to do so without being persecuted by right wing christian dumbfucks who think their belief in an imaginary beardy sky wizard gives them the right to judge what is immoral

I like Alan Moore a lot, he's an extraordinarily talent, but you can't claim that some how your artistic vision was compromised each time one of your graphic novels is adapted into a film and yet still give permission for these films to be made. I mean, From Hell, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, V for Vendetta, Watchmen. You cant keep cashing in and then try to remain righteous by claiming outrage each time. If your graphic novels are unfilmable then quit letting them be made into films!
@cet9280 Do some research, he never gave the rights away, infact, he took the makers of the watchmen movie to court to stop it being made. Unfortunately, he is not the only person who holds the rights to watchmen. He didn't make a penny from that movie.
@cet9280 Alan Moore has nothing to say on this , DC comics owns the material , so they make the movie deals. Moore has nothing to do with the deals, and as far as I understand he hasn t recieved money from this films and is uncreditted. Even if he was paid , which is not the case he still has the right to criticize the movies. I personally found Watchmen very mediocre.
@TheVetoSkreeemer He owns the characters he invented. He was so disappointed in V that he declined his huge fee, and said he didn't want his name on anything in future. So He's given up millions of squids, as a moral statement. For From Hell, for Constantine, for V, for League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, and now, Watchmen too. That is proper hardcore. Props to the Hippy.
I was surprised at the amount of CCTV cameras in London. That city is obsessed with CCTVs!! There isn't a spot in the city where you couldn't be watched by someone sitting in front of a TV screen!
And thats why i'm glad I don't live in London and Dublin isn't as bad.
Have you read the graphic novel ?, the movies the best 160min adaption you could have possibley done with it, but it still wasnt long enough to do it justice. I do prefer the angle used for the ending in the movie to the book, but other then that it needed to be longer (2 movies even). Here's hoping there's A LOT of extended footage on the DVD/Blu-Ray and not just the Black Freighter tacked on.
Well then get ready for the director's cut. I think the movie is excellent, but it wasn't a finished product yet. It had some pacing issues, and I think the extended cuts will correct this flaw. Personally, the film would of done better as a two part epic, with each film being over 150 minutes long. :)
Well all you need is 5 hours to tell the story. So it could of been a two part film, with each part being 150 minutes long.
150+150= 300. And I think 300 minutes is 5 hours. If the "Watchmen: Motion Capture" film can be told in 5 hours, why couldn't a two part live action film do the same?? :)
Because you need "room", as I said. One cannot take in all the information in each picture straight away. One needs time to absorb all the symbolism and information packed into EACH panel. For it to be worth making into a film, the director needs to play to the film's strengths. This means breaking down the information in each panel and stretching it out into a scene that can be easily absorbed. After all, the reader has all the time in the world to stare at a comic book panel.
There's actually only enough story to fill out a two part film, with each part lasting over 150 minutes.
Have you even seen "Watchmen: The Motion Comic?" That is a 5 hour long film, and it literally shows the entire comic-book. Why can't a live action film do the same?? Snyder managed to adapt the main plot in a 3+ film, all he needed to do was add in all of the supporting characters.
OK the PANELS are designed to be stared at for LONG periods of time, to understand everything that's going on.
You can't do that on a motion comic.
Hence, the original comic is NOT done justice.
SO, the director SHOULD play to the strengths of the medium of FILM, by extending the piece of film that corresponds to a given panel so that the observer can pick up everything that's being communicated. And in doing so, lend drama to the scene.
No, I don't understand at all. You're just chatting a bunch of gibberish, and completely denying the fact that it literally takes 5 hours to tell the story. A trilogy makes no sense at all.
Well I'm almost 30, Oh wise one, how about you take a deep breath, and explain it to me. The book itself, wasn't written as a 3 part series, so why Fuck with what's already there? Maybe since your only in your early 30's your not hip to Alan Moore's generation, and the way that they do things. If you were really such a superfan, you would have already seen The Black Freighter (I think that was part 2 of the trilogy "cough" Sarcasm "cough").
No it was itten as a 12 part series. That's divisible by 3, so I said at least a 3 parter would do it.
Why do you presume I had not seen the black freighter? In fact I did see it, so you're factually wrong. Furthermore, what has that to do with what I'm talking about?
"hip" to his "generation"? What are you gibbering about?
@Transformers217 I'm not surprised you don't understand you're only in your early 20's I'm not denying that it takes 5 hours to tell the story To tell it PROPERLY takes longer But OK, lets say 300 mins average film =90mins why not 3 films 100mins each?? And what about all the text in between the chapters in the comic? Is that included? Not mention the stuff I said previously I'm not going to repeat it Go back and read it However you look at it, you're talking like an idiot Fuck off.
@natmanprime The fact that I'm not understanding your logic, has nothing to with my age. You're logic is full of holes and completely idiotic.
The fact that it took you this long to reply to my post, probably proves that you simply don't know what you're talking about.
And you need 5 hours to do the book justice, if you're going to adapt it into a film. It should of been two parts, with each part being 150 minutes long. If you can't get your head around that, then you're not thinking.
sadly watchmen wasn't an exception to the rule. it was better than every other moore adaption, but, it had changed too many little things that niggled at me throughout the whole picture.
so the watchmen is called watchmen because of their reference to the ticking doomsday clock or is it because they just watch over people, and it can't go backwards because clocks(watches), can only go in one direction as we percieve it(denotatively with terror surmounting as nuclear holocaust becomes imminent, with no other path possible). Is that why manhattan is symbolized as being able to see the past of his life because that life age is his clock? Whatever, Alan's too cool for me.
Nope, its because its a book about vigilantes and one one the strongest phrases in the book is the famous "Who watches the watchmen?" Which basically asks, if someone is above of the law to protect us, who will ensure that they themselves do not break it? And Manhattan experiences time in a quantum state, he doesnt 'see the past', he experiences his entire existence at the same time, all the time. "It is the day I touch her. It is the day she leaves. It is the day I leave"
A brilliant writer, but a poor political scholar. Didn't the Reagan-Thatcher "fuck buddy" team as he called it...end the Cold War (started during Kennedy's administration, btw)? I seem to recall a certain wall and facism falling in the 80s.
Conversely now we have private ownership being nationalized, the "Patriot" Act (Bush was no Reagan) which Obama has not ended, England has disarmed it's citizens, authoritarian Iran has nuclear power and Hugo Chavez has removed his term limits.
Using "fascism" as a term for all totalitarian forms of government is confusing.
The Soviet Union broke up due to internal stresses it was too rigid to endure. Reagan/Thatcher can't possibly take all credit for that.
Will the free-market economies will do better in their own ordeal, now in progress? Stay tuned.
I agree with you that government power is growing and concentrating irresistibly; and that authoritarianism prospers. But there, you seem also to agree with Alan Moore.
I do agree with Alan Moore in theory, but not with his politics. We are in danger of authoritarian rule, but it won't be dominated by right wing Christians. It's going to be "warm" authoritarian rule of those who think of themselves as "socially conscious".
Look at prop 8 which the citizens voted down - and special interests respond using courts to attempt to usurp the rights of the voters. It's only a matter of time until other rights of individuals are stripped away "for their own good."
I'm looking forward to watching the Watchmen movie but I can see how it won't translate on film. Visually it'll look great, but it won't touch on the themes of the book...and the fact that the Black Freighter story isn't included at all really hurts the movie. They should've done a miniseries instead maybe.
British english is filthy! It must be cleaned up!!
On a more serious note .The subtitles are probably for people who don't have English as their primary language. It can be very soothing to have the titles as backup when you don't hear something well enough. :)
Personally i understand him well. I've grown used to the accent,
I suppose so, It's just a pet hate of mine. Especially after seeing subcontinental and middle eastern politicians and scholars subtitled on certain imported news items and documentaries (*cough* from the USA *cough*), just because they are brown.
The other day I was watching a show at a friends house where they subtitled Irish people, but only the blokes.
i c why he doesnt want his stuff to be made into film u connect with his work better when u read it and it isnt told to you but at the end of the day all these movies are adaptations and will never detract from the original source material and will hopfully get ppl to read them! in its simplest term these movies provide exposure for him and his work and that cant all be bad can it?
You can call him a 'full of himself prick' if he never delivers - but the people who read the comix know he delivers and the fact the studio's turn out mediocre movies of his work is all the more reason to read the books!!!! NORTHAMPTON RULES!!!! (end transmission..)
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
moore is a full of himself prick, screw him. let's see him not cash all those film royalty paychecks. Nobody but a bunch of comic book nerds would know who the hell he is or his works if not for the film adaptations of his works, so he needs to cash those checks, smile, and shut the fuck up.
So just because he isnt known by tons of people except "comic nerds" makes him a prick?
I know of him im a comic book nerd and i think his books that were made into movies are twice as better then the actual movies. If you would read his stuff and not just the ones that became movies you would like it to.
He DIDN'T cash the royalty checks. He gave them to the artists. Say what you will about Moore, but in this case, he has stuck tow hat he said, I think.
He doesn't speak muddled at all in my opinion, every single word is eloquently enunciated, its just that he has a deep, baritone voice and has a fairly rich Northampton accent, which purportedly Americans cant seem to stomach, let alone follow. And I wholeheartedly disagree about the notion of him being unwaveringly stubborn. I think he holds a lot of well deserved pride about his work, and is clearly intelligent about many relevant socio-political issues.
Good point you made there it's a shame people can be so pig headed and ignorant. I understand Moore's opinion that his films are unfilmable as adaptations rarely carry similar themes to that of the graphic novel.
Way to be tolerant and understanding of different cultures. Are you implying that all Americans are stupid or that the stupid ones can't understand him? I wonder how you would respond if someone said of you and your own lands that you were stupid and couldn't understand something of ours.
Monkeys killing monkeys over pieces of the ground. Stop being so ignorant and let's try and make a better world for children to be born into, 'kay?
Not to busrt your flower power bubble, but a few people have mentioned he is hard to understand. And to be honest, the mumbled voice combined with that accent, (help me out with where that accent is from btw) could make it hard to interpret for some.
I think he sounds fine, and 007isbond is a hypocritical idiot, but for fucks sake did you have to bring the children into this?
you know what guys, as much as i am looking forward to the new watchmen movie i almost don't want them to make it, just because you know when it comes out its gonna blow up and be everywhere and you know there not gonna come close to Alan's work, i mean the movies they've done so far are terrible they changed everything and watchmen especially won't work as a movie i mean how they gonna do the black freighter part?
Um, he actually changed a shit load from the 300 graphic which made the film suck. He rendered the fighting to these pointless slash-em-up action sequences and he allowed that travesty of a story where the Spartan queen sleeps with the council. 300 sucked beyond all recognition and I hope to god Znyder doesn't allow the same sort of fuck ups that ruined 300.
FINALLY someone agrees with me.300 did suck.I saw clips for the movie Watchmen and I'm not impressed.Though it was shot for shot like 300,it had too much slow motion, action, which fans know is not watchmen at all and Nite Owl is exactly like Batman in terms of equipment(he uses a glider cape) and dress.
whoever thay got to do it, outside of the 80s a film remake of V for V would need to do very well in order to survive the adaptation it needed in order to fit with the current context without looking like a 1984 rip off. 1984's political commentary holds itself today better than v for v can outside of the eighties.
I would easily pay money for a video of Alan Moore reading Watchmen. I read it already but he just gets so into it and his voice is really deep and relaxing.
There is a "motion comic video" of watchmen available but unfortunately Alan Moore was not involved and not even in the credits! it's like a cartoon with the 12 chapters lasting about 30 mins each. Check it out.
I think Snyder mentioned this in one of his first movie interviews at a comic-con panel. Moore actually refused to put his name on it, just like the movie. He's a very stubborn man. Brilliant, but obnoxiously stubborn

If your graphic novels are unfilmable then quit letting them be made into films!
cet9280 2 years ago
You assume that he owns the right to the works.
GodotArrived 2 years ago
@cet9280 Do some research, he never gave the rights away, infact, he took the makers of the watchmen movie to court to stop it being made. Unfortunately, he is not the only person who holds the rights to watchmen. He didn't make a penny from that movie.
FreakBoi2008 2 years ago
cet9280, your a total idiot. He refused to accept any money made by the movies.
you should probably think for two seconds before you post comments.
Seawaffle2021 2 years ago
@cet9280 Alan Moore has nothing to say on this , DC comics owns the material , so they make the movie deals. Moore has nothing to do with the deals, and as far as I understand he hasn t recieved money from this films and is uncreditted. Even if he was paid , which is not the case he still has the right to criticize the movies. I personally found Watchmen very mediocre.
TheVetoSkreeemer 5 months ago
@TheVetoSkreeemer He owns the characters he invented. He was so disappointed in V that he declined his huge fee, and said he didn't want his name on anything in future. So He's given up millions of squids, as a moral statement. For From Hell, for Constantine, for V, for League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, and now, Watchmen too. That is proper hardcore. Props to the Hippy.

Ish0tJR 2 years ago
Well then get ready for the director's cut. I think the movie is excellent, but it wasn't a finished product yet. It had some pacing issues, and I think the extended cuts will correct this flaw. Personally, the film would of done better as a two part epic, with each film being over 150 minutes long. :)
Transformers217 2 years ago
I would say 3 parts
To give room for the scenes
a la Lord Of The Rings or Star Wars
natmanprime 2 years ago
Well all you need is 5 hours to tell the story. So it could of been a two part film, with each part being 150 minutes long.
150+150= 300. And I think 300 minutes is 5 hours. If the "Watchmen: Motion Capture" film can be told in 5 hours, why couldn't a two part live action film do the same?? :)
Transformers217 2 years ago
Because you need "room", as I said. One cannot take in all the information in each picture straight away. One needs time to absorb all the symbolism and information packed into EACH panel. For it to be worth making into a film, the director needs to play to the film's strengths. This means breaking down the information in each panel and stretching it out into a scene that can be easily absorbed. After all, the reader has all the time in the world to stare at a comic book panel.
natmanprime 2 years ago
People can have room with a two part film, with each part lasting over 150 minutes. Three parts make no sense at all.
Transformers217 2 years ago
did you even read what I said???
you're starting to irritate me
in addition to what I said, there's also such a thing as "story arc"
That's why the comic was displayed as 12 parts not 2 super-long comic books.
In fact there's more than enough information in the story to fill alot more than 3 films. 10hrs+.
what works on a panel doesn't always work on screen. The comic was DESIGNED thus.
Hence 'room' is required to MAKE it work on screen.
natmanprime 2 years ago
There's actually only enough story to fill out a two part film, with each part lasting over 150 minutes.
Have you even seen "Watchmen: The Motion Comic?" That is a 5 hour long film, and it literally shows the entire comic-book. Why can't a live action film do the same?? Snyder managed to adapt the main plot in a 3+ film, all he needed to do was add in all of the supporting characters.
Transformers217 2 years ago
OK the PANELS are designed to be stared at for LONG periods of time, to understand everything that's going on.
You can't do that on a motion comic.
Hence, the original comic is NOT done justice.
SO, the director SHOULD play to the strengths of the medium of FILM, by extending the piece of film that corresponds to a given panel so that the observer can pick up everything that's being communicated. And in doing so, lend drama to the scene.
To do this takes a LOT of film.
Understand?
natmanprime 2 years ago
No, I don't understand at all. You're just chatting a bunch of gibberish, and completely denying the fact that it literally takes 5 hours to tell the story. A trilogy makes no sense at all.

Well I'm almost 30, Oh wise one, how about you take a deep breath, and explain it to me. The book itself, wasn't written as a 3 part series, so why Fuck with what's already there? Maybe since your only in your early 30's your not hip to Alan Moore's generation, and the way that they do things. If you were really such a superfan, you would have already seen The Black Freighter (I think that was part 2 of the trilogy "cough" Sarcasm "cough").
mcgowanm095 1 year ago
@mcgowanm095

@natmanprime The fact that I'm not understanding your logic, has nothing to with my age. You're logic is full of holes and completely idiotic.
The fact that it took you this long to reply to my post, probably proves that you simply don't know what you're talking about.
And you need 5 hours to do the book justice, if you're going to adapt it into a film. It should of been two parts, with each part being 150 minutes long. If you can't get your head around that, then you're not thinking.
Transformers217 1 year ago

What rule?
evlampi666 2 years ago
sadly watchmen wasn't an exception to the rule. it was better than every other moore adaption, but, it had changed too many little things that niggled at me throughout the whole picture.
TwistedSand 2 years ago
so the watchmen is called watchmen because of their reference to the ticking doomsday clock or is it because they just watch over people, and it can't go backwards because clocks(watches), can only go in one direction as we percieve it(denotatively with terror surmounting as nuclear holocaust becomes imminent, with no other path possible). Is that why manhattan is symbolized as being able to see the past of his life because that life age is his clock? Whatever, Alan's too cool for me.
Oneiroi729 2 years ago

Conversely now we have private ownership being nationalized, the "Patriot" Act (Bush was no Reagan) which Obama has not ended, England has disarmed it's citizens, authoritarian Iran has nuclear power and Hugo Chavez has removed his term limits.
twieneke76 2 years ago
Using "fascism" as a term for all totalitarian forms of government is confusing.
The Soviet Union broke up due to internal stresses it was too rigid to endure. Reagan/Thatcher can't possibly take all credit for that.
Will the free-market economies will do better in their own ordeal, now in progress? Stay tuned.
I agree with you that government power is growing and concentrating irresistibly; and that authoritarianism prospers. But there, you seem also to agree with Alan Moore.
swivet 2 years ago 3

They should've done a miniseries instead maybe.

i c why he doesnt want his stuff to be made into film u connect with his work better when u read it and it isnt told to you but at the end of the day all these movies are adaptations and will never detract from the original source material and will hopfully get ppl to read them! in its simplest term these movies provide exposure for him and his work and that cant all be bad can it?

moore is a full of himself prick, screw him. let's see him not cash all those film royalty paychecks. Nobody but a bunch of comic book nerds would know who the hell he is or his works if not for the film adaptations of his works, so he needs to cash those checks, smile, and shut the fuck up.
luckyyoungturk 2 years ago
So just because he isnt known by tons of people except "comic nerds" makes him a prick?
I know of him im a comic book nerd and i think his books that were made into movies are twice as better then the actual movies. If you would read his stuff and not just the ones that became movies you would like it to.
sleeeeep 2 years ago 2
It's not that simple.
His work expands far beyond 'comic book nerds' as his level of intellect and ingenuity has made him a very respected and followed writer.
The film adaption creators are just looking for easy money schemes by making films out of his brilliant work.
The film adaptions are always more limited and hollywoodised with good guys and bad guys.
If you read the book and understand it, there are no villains and heroes, just a brilliant story of intertwining characters.
Ophiuchus123456789 2 years ago 3
He DIDN'T cash the royalty checks. He gave them to the artists. Say what you will about Moore, but in this case, he has stuck tow hat he said, I think.
hanshotfirst1138 2 years ago 2
He doesn't speak muddled at all in my opinion, every single word is eloquently enunciated, its just that he has a deep, baritone voice and has a fairly rich Northampton accent, which purportedly Americans cant seem to stomach, let alone follow. And I wholeheartedly disagree about the notion of him being unwaveringly stubborn. I think he holds a lot of well deserved pride about his work, and is clearly intelligent about many relevant socio-political issues.
liquidmetal1 2 years ago 2
Good point you made there it's a shame people can be so pig headed and ignorant. I understand Moore's opinion that his films are unfilmable as adaptations rarely carry similar themes to that of the graphic novel.
Wisey134 2 years ago
Way to be tolerant and understanding of different cultures. Are you implying that all Americans are stupid or that the stupid ones can't understand him? I wonder how you would respond if someone said of you and your own lands that you were stupid and couldn't understand something of ours.

i thinkthat the watchmen movie will turn out ok in the hands of zach snyder. he doesnt change to much of what the original comic did. like in 300.
zaengo 3 years ago
Um, he actually changed a shit load from the 300 graphic which made the film suck. He rendered the fighting to these pointless slash-em-up action sequences and he allowed that travesty of a story where the Spartan queen sleeps with the council. 300 sucked beyond all recognition and I hope to god Znyder doesn't allow the same sort of fuck ups that ruined 300.
RoadWarriorSammy 3 years ago 3
