  • The All Blacks totally own Whales at Rugby.

  • Why do people care so much about people being gay when it doesn't effect you? Let people live their lives man, stop being an ass.

  • This is beautiful!

  • They SAY they're supportive of him and accept him (selectors and team mates), but you watch, he will just 'fade away' gradually for 'other' reasons. It's the way things work

  • Gareth Thomas is a topman and makes me proud to be Welsh and the Welsh rugby team's reaction to him coming out makes me even prouder,.

  • I am so proud that a rugby player from Wales is the only openly gay athlete in the world, very inspring, makes me proud to be from Wales! Such a lovely guy.

  • If someone drops the soap in the shower I for one am not picking it up! But seriously, this man should have kept his mouth shut as rugby is a high-contact sport with many possibilities for “misunderstandings” and embarrassment.

Also, don’t expect an avalanche of “gays” deciding to follow Thomas’ example and come out - many still remember what happened to Justin Fashanu. Not very nice at all.

  • @GamesFrontiers no actually u shud shut up, it's not gays that need to hide and live a lie, that's not a reality i want to live in, peoples attitudes need to chance just as they did with black people, we can chance the reality of the world we live in

  • @GamesFrontiers Thing is, and I KNOW I'm right, that cos fans and public are so 'starstruck' about already famous and established stars, they will be accepting over such sports stars but even if talented players etc come out when they're starting their careers or want to become famous, people will reject them. Sounds insane doesn't it ?. But that's what the dumb public are like. Thomas would NEVER have been accepted, no matter how good he was. He came out at the end of his career

  • He's so brave and he's a fucking amazing epic player. Fair play to him.

Side note, he looks like Catherine Tate as that "how very dare you" bloke!

  • She looks more of a man than he does

  • His wife WAS very upset actually and I think he used her. I hope they washed his champagne glass well ; I would have smashed it just in case, with thick gloves on in case it cut my hands

  • @TheKenfigI . .Your comments don't make any sense explain ?

  • @kmostudios Why don't they make sense ? What EXACTLY do you not understand and what specifically needs explaining ?

  • @TheKenfig I think what you are trying to say is just because hes gay you seem to think hes dirty, or has a disease, not everyone has a disease just because they happen to be gay. Are you saying therefore because of his sexual prefrence hes unclean thats why you would wear the gloves if you broke hes drinking glass ??

  • Why does it matter if it's a macho sport? I've met quite a few openly gay macho men.

  • im asexual no one talk about that

  • What strenght one must have to come out in such a masculine and straight driven world he was in! Although this was never my world ( I discovered that I was gay at the age of 12 and was happy with it), I still can relate to his story! My ex-boyfriend was married before me and has 3 kids....He never had the guts to come out, because society pressed on him to be straight! I'm ever so happy he did and all the way into our relationship I was totally accepted by his family...I still am. So: GO Gareth!

  • disgusting..

  • @elbnderi You're saying he's disgusting? Well then YOU are for thinking that.

  • @elbnderi He is not disgusting YOUR SOUL IS. Clearly you weren't raised well. I FEEL BAD FOR YOU.

  • @chamthebam What do you mean 'raised' ? THAT is disgusting

  • @elbnderi like yo religion

  • there are dozens of sports stars who came out as gat going back to billie jean and many more. it is a great thing that gay people are not castigated. but I would add the new victims of abuse and castigation are the old and of course the disabled. these vulnerable peoples lives are as hard as always. heck you cant even get a wheelchair into most Churches still. how many disabled people are on tv really or in movies? its pathetic. the way old people are treated is 10 times worse than prisoners

  • justin fashanu said he was gay decades ago. so gareth thomas is nowhere near the 1st to come out

  • @merlin999999 and what happened to justin when he came out?

  • he is not a hero. he was cheating on his wife with men and got caught. he then sold a book that revealed loads of personal things about his wife including her private mscarriage. he is no hero.

  • @johnplayersstandard

Regardless of straight or gay, the fact that you're entirely incapable of processing a coherent thought without blasting profanity in a public channel in a failed attempt to get your point across goes to show that you do not have the intelligence to even enter an adult conversation about a topic that terrifies you so much that you can't even communicate in English. I pity you and your narrow view of the world and all it's perfections and imperfections.

  • @shaldana Sir! I have nothing against gays or straights or bisexuals i simpley want to see the reaction people gave after such a comment! It really doesn't have any affect at all on me. I have a couple friend that are bisexual and gay infact! Shure the world has many perfection and imperfections but being gay deffently isnt a imperfection. People need to start worrying about the things that really affect the world in a negative way instead of bashing gays and wasteing but i was bored! :) :0

  • @shaldana I had to leave a couple letters out to get the whole thing in there! lol :/

  • Gareth Thomas should be on Glee because he could be an idol for Kurt and Blaine also Finn...right?

  • Maybe this is mean but why ruin a life of another human being just because you're afraid of being gay in public? Just stay single and leave a helpless woman out of it. Geez. Imagine how his wife felt when everything she knew was a big lie.

  • @wiseguyknowsit It doesn't matter now, everything's alright with him and his ex-wife.

  • Ellen mentions that it must be hard to come out in macho sport , but it has to be one of the most gay friendly sports in the world and gearth was brave to come out but as a rugby fan it is not even an issue , he still is one the best players in rugby.

  • @frontierdarren Exactly right, as opposed to football, rugby is not hyped up in the media in that sense of the players public lives as football is. Most people I know were more gutted when Alfie moved to Cardiff Blues than him coming out.

  • Just imanging the son of a gun is back Hieeeaaaaaaa. Really I am dying alive.

  • Macho sport? It's the most homo-erotic sport conceivable xD Just sayin.

  • @JermzzzyFTW

That may be so, but it's also one of the most physically brutal, think of the scrums, tries, tackles etc. People don't lose teeth, become paralysed or break bone son the pitch for nothing!

  • He is so blessed and lucky! not all of us are that fortunate. :-(

  • He's amazing, i remember seeing a big poster of him in the changing rooms at P.E in school when i was in the closet i bet when gay kids who are in that school now look at the poster they will feel proud and have hope ! :D this is great and its sooo weird hearing his welsh accent next to ellens american one! haha not many welsh people on american tv sadly

  • he's such a lovely guy - such a lovely BIG boy - bless

  • Thank u man!

  • "the Peyton Manning of Rugby"..... goodness me what twaddle!

  • It not going to help to secretly remove half the comments, (Eco) its, its not, not going, going to,to help, help, to, to secretly, secretly remove, remove half, half the,the comments, comments...... Like The Inspiring Gareth Thomas Shares His Story, his words was so inspiring it eco-ed in my anus. You see its proven like evolotion that words can eco in your anus, specially when the wind blows and a little speaker is in there.

  • favorite rugby player of all time

  • He's a hot DILF :)

  • I think he is very inspirational.

  • Good for him !

  • Hey Prof- get a clue, the bible is not the place to find out about homosexuality-walk out in the world..

  • Evoluion is a fact, but in what time my friend? Are we going to start with the diamonds?

  • @ProfGHerculean

    Silver? rubbberSTAMP? Coog?!?!

  • what a incredible story and handsome man ... its good to see non typical stereo types of gay people ... thank you Gareth

  • If they want to go against ouer religion and destroying it, with one guy fuck then they should fear there live's, because they on purpose trying to be stupid with there new age shit.

  • @ProfGHerculean

Fear their lives? What are you going to do, shank me? Bring it choirboy. Your primitive beliefs have been disproven by science. Evolution is a fact. Meaning, Adam and Eve never existed.

    Go have a cry.

  • I am true to what I say and don't have to be taken serious, because I am no political leader. But I have facts in my life when I whas a kid that a friend that is now guy tryed to recruit me to be a rebellion against my parents and do the new age thing while all christianity must go. If they what to play new world order tricks on me they must feel my word. And that is that all recruiters must be shot, we have no religois rights. If they want to go against ouer religion and destroying it, with

  • one gay the other a lesbian , what a coincidence.

  • @cowboysimpson well they are both gay actually

  • we love you Gareth!!!

  • sex is easy but sexuality has been always been very complex; people are not black and white, there are many grey areas in the adult world, we all have multiple personalities and are capable of almost anything. And people change ,too,we never stay the same. This is the truth about being human.

  • I can only say one thing: Thanks for sharing! A great inspiration for many!

    (well, ok, thats two things...)

  • Gareth Thomas NEVER 'came out'... you just learned his name... anyone that had heard of him before (especially people from Wales) already knew he was gay, even when he was still married. His many affairs and time spent cruising local areas were common knowledge. It saddens me to see him get so much attention for doing something so poorly that a million other people do so impressively - people that come out with no support but with little to no regard for the fear they feel.

  • ... don't get me wrong. It's great for him that he's now able to live his life openly and has accepted himself; but I can't get passed 'good for him' to seeing him as an individual of note to be applauded and praised.

  • @magicalsamurai2006 There's always one! Well everyone makes mistakes, and he's certainly not perfect. But he more than makes up for it, by being an inspiraiton to gay people and it helping create acceptance towards gay people. And in rugby of all sports! If this helps one gay kid come out and accept himself, then it's worth it.

  • @Y2Krashman

sorry but i did nt understand the context u wer putting it in when i hear mithochondria i automatically think of the human cell and respiration .....

but anyway just watched some of ur videos and respect u 4 wat ur doin

  • @lukeob94

Cheers bro! I thought you were a christian choirboy using religion as a weapon! When that shit goes down, its only too entertaining to dish back a few facts!

    Cheers mate!

  • @ProfGHerculean

  • The people who are leaving nasty comments are either bigots or attention seeking trolls, both of which should be ignored by decent people.

You are doing them a favour by responding, so why bother.

  • Jwesno1

You call him a faggot. I would like to see you say that to his face. You wouldn't be so tough then

  • Gareth Thomas is one of the best rugby players Wales has ever had, it doesn't matter if he's gay or not, he's a hell of a rugby player.

  • Hero

  • Get me the axe, and ticket to his house.....and goverment top secret papers.

  • These's unfortunately one serious flaw with giving access of the internet to the general public, you will always find people like jwesno1 purposely saying hateful and un-thought through things to try and generate a reaction from people that should know better than to react to small minded, thick skulled, pig headed assholes like him/her. Hmm . . . . . I didn't think this through, sorry.

He's not inspiring! HES A FAGGOT!!!!! ROT IN HELL FAGGOT DEVIL!

    jwesno1 19 minutes ago

  • @jwesno1

Hell don't exist bro! Good news huh? There's this awesome thing called, like, science. And the like, science thingomajig discovered the evo-ma-lution. The evo-ma-lution is a proven like notion!

Meaning, evolution disproves the bible. So, it's cool that you're into witchcraft, voodoo, or wicca, or gods, we all need to make something up to believe in! But evolution is a fact that proves the bible as wrong. No adam and Eve.

So using your pretense in gods as hate: not gonna happen bro!

  • @jwesno1 It seems we hav a tough guy watching this video

  • @LedSexton He may be gay, but if you have followed his rugby career you would know he could beat the shit out of you. Making him gay doesn'y automatically mean he is bad at what he does.

  • @jwesno1

Your a dick. There is no hell, because there is no Christian god choirboy. Evolution, which is proven, disproves the Adam and eve bullshit. Completely! Absolved.

Therefore, the bible is disproven as bronze-age goat herder superstition.

It's 2011, humanity is outgrowing the hoodoovoodoo Christ bullshit. You should start.

    Your god is fake.

Mine is real. The sun. Without my god, *you* die. Without *your* god, I stop pretending.

Read a science book voodoo boy.

  • profgherculean.go-ogler.com/t48-french-revulotion

  • Just give him a hand, clap your hands!!!! Because he could take the fish smell. Those guy basters tryed to make me guy, but I got something to tell them: God really standed up, and when you fuck the dude in the ass, you yell God really standedup!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Jesus is Alive!!!!!!

  • @ProfGHerculean Wow, your complete lack of education to spell or even string a sentence together puts the nail in the coffin as to why noone is taking you remotely seriously, you are talking absolute rubbish.

  • I'm also gay and I have not told anyone about it and I don't find meaning in life because I'm leaving a lie. I've planed and tried to commit suicide so many times. I don't know what to do.

  • gg

  • @ Y2Krashman

Ur retarded by mithochondrias carry out respiration in animals ....:P

Btw Gareth Thomas is a hero and is 1 of de best centres in d world . Nd no I'm nt welsh I'm irish

  • I honestly couldn't care the sexuality of alfie! It does not matter what sex he is into, the guy, for welsh rugby, which i am a huge fan, has done no end! not many people would manage to have the respect from team members, and i mean big team members who were hitting the headlines, like this man did! one of the all time welsh greats, gay or not! and at international level, even if he did fancy the opposite number,he still run through them first and score the points, and celebrate with the head pat

  • Isn't it awful that we live in a world where Ellen has to mention how difficult it was for him to publicly admit his orientation. Damn the pathetic homophobia in this world!!!

  • Check cool videos search martinroux8 on youtube

  • Well, he's not the first... Australian Rugby player Ian Roberts came out in 1995 while still playing. Also, Australian diver Matthew Mitcham is openly gay - the only openly gay athlete at the 2008 games. And she should all that, given her wife is Australian.

  • HEY MAKE SURE TO COME BY AND SPEND SOMETIME AT MINE ALLS INVITED COME LISTEN!!!!:)

  • Da Iawn Gareth. I'm glad the rugby world has reacted as a whole in the positive way it has. I hope this encourages others to be themselves - however, I think the biggest step would be for a footballer (of the soccer variety) to come out - but sadly I think we all know that the reaction in the football world would not be as friendly as in the rugby world.

  • I remember reading that Gareth was gay and being surprised but happy and full of admiration for him being brave enough to come out. I remember thinking that this was the bravest thing in rugby since Buck Shelton played on with a testicle hanging out. I remember being so proud of the rugby union world and the British public for embracing him so positively and supporting him.

And I remember the day he switched to rugby league and thinking "Gareth Thomas YOU FUCKING CUNT!" lol jk xx

  • Well done Gareth! A fantastic ambassador for welsh rugby and an excellent role model for young and old. I wish you every success for the future - Sarah Tilley x

  • @foreverfaceroll

You must be english you dog raping morris dancer.

  • He's an amazing role model. Coming out is hard no matter at what stage in life. Not sure about Mickey Rourke playing him though. Hmm Thoughts?

  • @GayBachelorBlog I can't imagine Rourke playing a Welshman for one, but more important is the age gap and difference in appearance. I can't see it happening.

  • @jovialduke Hell no! Daniel Craig I reckon, he'd be perfect.

  • i admire this man! the fact that people don't realize is GAY HATERS r actually THE IGNORANTS!!!

  • John Lennon said it best, "All we need is love!"

  • @lorneysaus

well I agree entirely it is his own business but I am just wondering if he would get such a widescale approval rating if he had banged another woman and left his wife for her. For some, the 'gay' part of the story is clouding judgment.

  • @truthoutmedia

Idiots spouting the ignorance that you spout are the reason why there are gays marrying women in the first place. Garett Thomas is not a bisexual, but rather a homosexual who was forced into a marriage by a society that refuses to accept gay men, let alone masculine gay men. Hence, why for many masculine men, suicide seems to be preferable to being identified as gay.

    You perpetuate mentioned suicides.

  • @Y2Krashman

erm, where did I say he is Bisexual mate?

  • @truthoutmedia

Did I insinuate that you proclaimed he was bisexual? No, you take idiocy one step further. You infer that a man, who has no attraction to his wife, and none to begin with, should keep his wife bound in a passionless marriage.

    You tool.

  • @truthoutmedia

Oh. Your one of those watchtower wankers. 'splains all. Just in case you have no scientific education (you don't; your a bible-literalist) I'll give you a lesson in simple, factual logic. Evolution is a *proven* fact. Proven through the complete fossil record, mitochondrial DNA, endogenous retroviruses etc. Meaning, Adam and Eve never existed.

    The bible is a lie.

Repent Christotard! Repent of your hymns choirboy! Repent of your Christian voodoo!

    Religitards. Amusing.

  • @Y2Krashman although you make a few valid points, saying that he was forced into marriage by society is ridiculous. as a grown man, he CHOSE to cave & conform. that's like me being around alcoholics & saying, "well i may be grown but they were making me feel out of place so i HAD to drink." children could get a pass for conforming, grown adults can choose to act like children or own their actions. this guy should've thought about others rather than himself - he put his wife through so much.

  • @sprinklefriend

He might have chosen to conform by marrying a woman. But the question is why? Because of homophobic and superstitious tards who believe that Evolution isn't real, the Earth is flat; snakes, bushes and donkeys can talk; giants are real; whales can be lived in like submarines.

Bottom line? Homophobia is the modern KKK dogma. Homophobia kills. Nuffield said.

  • yay for gareth!! can't wait for rugby to start :)

  • Mr. Edwards, I tip my hat to you. If only Football (Soccer) could draw inspiration from his story and drag itself out of the dark ages. For a game full of precious primadonnas it's HORRIBLY homophobic, and this is coming from a straight fan.

  • Comment removed

  • Alfie, stop being such a bloody drama queen! Being gay is not a terminal illness, so stop with all this 'poor me' crap! Siomedig iawn.

  • amazing player, great guy.

  • Yeah, a true 'hero'.

So what is the difference between a man who leaves his wife for another woman and a man who leaves his wife because he's been sleeping around with other men?

Oh, there is a difference. Don't question it.

  • chwarae teg gareth :)

  • Absolutely brilliant... Now if only we can get Aussie football and rugby codes to be so supportive...

  • if you think about it, its fucking disgusting how, in present day, people feel the need to hold back on orientation.

this is one of the many reasons why i get frurious whenever i hear someone who is against gay rights.

all of them have been religious too

  • hi, sorry, can anyone tell me what his father said to him @ around 2:46-ish.. couldn't catch it!! thanx!!

  • @sgtbaluku "Son, I just want to stick to you a toast for the rest of your life."

  • @Ehvan thanx!! :)

  • @sgtbaluku He said son. I just want to sit here and toast the start of the rest of your life x

  • @1Stoya thanx guys, wow.. tat's a man tat loves his son :) no matter wat!

  • he isn't the only openly gay athlete! what about Matthew Mitcham?

  • @0kiccc0 Diving isn't exactly a macho professional sport. Rugby is like the NFL over there. Except its tougher because you don't have all that protective padding and helmets.

  • @nikskorpio

yea i know, but im just referring to the description of the video saying that gareth thomas is the only openly gay athlete in the world :)

  • @0kiccc0 oh okay. I wasn't paying attention to that. So he's only the 2nd athlete, still playing anyway. There are probably so many gay athletes that want to confess to him because they need someone to talk to. It's sad how they all feel they have to hide. Pretending to be 2 different people is depressing. :( Hollywood is the same.

  • @nikskorpio

Exactly. Whilst it is admirable that Mittcham could admit who he is, it is, it doesn't do anything in the manner of shattering stereotypes. In 97 Australian Rugby player Ian Roberts did just that, and now so does Gareth Thomas.

  • We are a bit better about LGBT people in the UK.

  • He is such a great guy and rugby must be great foreplay, especially with a guy like him!

When he finally leaves his sport, he is going to make an excellent full-time activist.

  • I'm pretty sure Ljundberg is gay. There's no big deal around it but it's not exactly a secret either.

  • ACTUALLY SUCH A NEGATIVE MESSAGE 5:10

  • wow. thats an amazing story

  • @SFScooter1969 ... why be so picky? The Ellen producers over stated it. He's not the first, and he's not the only, if you count people who aren't in team sports. And there are a number of out gay Olympic competitors too. Still ... most high profile athletes wait until they retire to come out. Gareth is a member of a very small club - he never claimed to be the first, he only ever claimed to be a gay athlete who couldn't stay in the closet!

  • @bobierto59 it's my bad for stating "team sports" in an earlier comment, but please, name a current out athlete competing in professional a sport. (Heck, why don't you name a past athlete that came out of the closet while actively competing.) The video description does not claim he's "first" (and I did not claim he was the first), but it does specify professional, which i'm sure means no disrespect to gay Olympic athletes.

  • Looking macho or effeminate says nothing about one's strength, courage or worth. What also irritates me is that this prejudice furthers the idea that there's something intrinsically wrong and/or weak (your pick) about femininity. Although gays should know better, too many of them are not immune to sexism -- which is a shame.

  • @judikael73 please permit me to quote this response, especially the first line, it's very inspiring :)

  • Gays come in all shades. I'm fed up with the pressure coming from both outside and within the "gay community" that you have to be a "good" gay (aka straight-acting, playing by heteronormative rules) to be accepted and that it is the "sissies' fault" if we are still facing rejection.

  • I really admire Ellen for the job she does, trying to open people's minds. I also admire Mr Thomas for coming out since it is particularly difficult in professional sports. You can lose your sponsors, get the hell from your team mates or your team's supporters -- soccer is a good example in that respect where you can still hear officials state (as in Italy with Marcello Lippi), or former players imply (France, David Ginola, 2005), that you can't be gay and a professional player. Why? Well,

  • yay for tolerant/accepting straight people! thanks to @Dharane0902, noodlegirl99 and others for expressing your positive comments.

  • Right on

  • @irvykinneas - you're so right! He's far braver than most athletes. @getafix21 - no kidding! He is great looking with a killer body - just do a google search for images, he's not shy about taking his shirt off!

  • He's now hot on the international gaydar screen. I can imagine every leading fashion label keeping tabs on him

  • Cristiano Ronaldo should follow him and come out.

  • hes a fucking hero

  • So proud of him! I wish more people were this brave.

  • PS Gareth's wife continues to be supportive, she just did an interview in a UK paper where she talked about the new man in her life, wished Gareth the best and thanked him for coming out to her when she was 30 and still had time to get on with her life. And Gareth is very active in supporting ChildLine, a telephone counseling service in the UK for children and people under age 18.

  • OK folks here's the deal - Gareth Thomas is the only professional athlete who plays a team sport and is openly gay. In the world. Period. TWO pro team athletes have come out in the past, while still playing. Justin Fashanu, was a UK pro soccer in the UK who came out in 1990. Fans, teammates and his family were terrible to him, and he killed himself in 1998. Ian Roberts is an Australian ruby player who came out in 1995. Players and fans were supportive, and he retired from the sport in 1998.

  • He's not a pro player anymore, is he?

  • @elissarita yes, he currently plays for the professional rugby club Crusaders; and he played for the Welsh national team as recently as Oct. 2009.

  • "only openly gay professional athlete in THE WORLD"!?!?! You gotta be kidding me.

  • @relltastic please tell us what other openly gay athlete is currently playing professional team sports; perhaps @TheEllenShow will amend their comment section if you clarify your doubt.

  • @SFScooter1969 I am only commenting at this point about the description for this video. The description doesn't mention anything about being the only "current" athlete. That is my contention. The description also doesn't say anything about it being only team sports.

  • @relltastic the "current" is implied; the description doesn't state that he is the "first ever" or only one in sports history. however, please, give an example whether or not it is team sports. if you can't name one, please asy so, but, again, if you provide a legit example, perhaps @TheEllenShow will amend the description. (heck, why don't you even name a past athlete who was openly gay while at the professional level.)
