Interesting to note that, once he sits down, the camera only moves when Travis is no longer paying attention. When someone snaps him back to the conversation the camera stops.
Also, people with insomnia develop stomach problems. So, the alka-seltzer is another symptom of his physical decline as he gets mentally worse. At this point he hasn't decided to start buying guns yet.
Great scene, in spite of the GLARING continuity problem! You see it?? Travis has coffee....then he drops the alka seltzer and Whoa....there's a cheeseburger! Where'd that come from????....then the cheeseburger ain't there no more in the next wide shot. Still....haunting glimpse into Travis' mind.
It's his fault he has no friends... Everybodys trying to be friendly to him (except the mau-mau, which he doesn't want anyway)... He feels he "cooler" or "better" than the rest in a sense... He'd just rather not deal with their stupidity (in his opinion)... Wizard:" You know Doughboy, Charlie T.? Travis: (thinks)"Who's this fucker?" Funny shit...
those black pimps that travis stares at deserve to be dragged out of the diner with a noose around their neck and strung up on a lamp-post .... people who facilitate child trafficking deserve nothing less.
the alka selzer shows Travis is dis associating from those around him. He is silent when walking in and non responsive when spoken to and then says "whats happen" in a clipped defensive manner. Travis is hostile. Mau-Mau land and the glance to the blacks. He has a lot on his mind and time is like the fizz. electric and lost in the noise
I always thought that it reminded him of Viet Nam, how they always had to put anti-Malaria pills in their drinking water. It's never directly mentioned in the film, but his being in that war would be responsible for a lot of his problems.

...but while what you all seem to be experiencing is "beeing a teenager", Travis here is "psychotic". There's a big difference.

i feel like this everyday in school.
My friends sit there talking about shit that just doesn't matter to me anymore. Shoes, clothes, phones etc...just bullshit that i have no interest in.
I'm slowly loosing the ability to make conversation with anyone, i just have no interest anymore.

I think the alka selzer is because he feels sick after seeing the pimps in the diner.
NaturalSelector68 2 years ago
Its more than that, its his pent up frustration. He is a time bomb waiting to go off.
