  • say if i wanted to add a noise gate and a compression pedal to your chain, where would i add those?

  • I have a dunlop hendrix wah, and an MXR carbon copy delay, and I borrowed my friend's Voodoo Labs Sparkle Drive, but I'm having problems with where to place the delay seeing as the drive seems to affect it in either position, either making the delay louder and distorted (delay placed before drive) or changing the wah it generally sounds with delay placed after drive, causing the input to be much higher...any ideas?

  • mitch from modern family????/

  • So the guitar goes into the tuner and the last effect to the amp input?? Thanks

  • great video, thanks

  • Great... but I still prefer playing in front of the chain instead of behind it.

  • I like Tuner>Distortion>Wah

  • WHy is it every damn musician has to be "cute" when making these You-Tube vids? Dude, I'm sure you're smart, but you ain't funny.....you're irritating as shit.

  • sounds like you need a hum eliminator

  • Where would EQ and Octaver pedals go in this chain? Right now I have my tuner going into my Danelectros Fish 'n' Chips EQ, then my Crybaby Wah, Danelectro FAB Distortion, Boss OC-3 Super Octave, and finally Danelectro FAB Echo. Is this a good setup or would you recommend something else?

  • I put the crystal meth pedal first too!

  • the best effect is the one you don't notice, if you know what I mean. As a listener you don' want to hear a phase shifter or fuzz, you want really good guitar playing and tone only as an after thought will you notice a flange or something. You know what I mean?

  • Nice

  • your reverb isn't plugged in...

  • Comment removed

  • dude , you need to be more enthusiastic ...

  • Guitar---tuner---wah---overdrive---distortion---effects loop(chorus, phaser, phlanger ect.)--- reverb---delay---amp. That is my personal preference

  • I only use BOSS pedals (a matter of preference) and have a chunk of them I am not sure where to put. I'll use codes to save space for my current chain and put the ones I'm not having luck with in Parenthesis. input - TU2 - GE7 - (CS3 - AC3 - OS2 - SD1 - DS1 - BD2 - MT2 - NS2 - BF3 - PH3 - TR2) - RT-20 - CE5 = DD7 =DD7 = RV5 = output

Based on your experience... any suggestions? I thought of using the noise suppressor's send returns for the cs through the MT separate... but don't know.

  • that doesn't sound good..

  • I like the fact that he added in the "disclaimer" cause everyone will try to say hes wrong lol

  • 4:26 someons retarded

  • @1tootall96 lolololol hahaha

  • Rock on Dude !!!

  • Where should I put my Boss PS6 harmonizer? Does that count as a modulation effect?

  • I've only been play guitar for a year...I was thinking of putting pedals in this order......... chromatic tuner, distortion, phaser and chorus. I know its a matter of personal choice but is that a good chain?

  • Any idea on where a octave pedal would be best placed? Particularly, before or after distortion?

  • what about a noise suppressor?

  • How should I order my pedals if I have:

    Dunlop Cry Baby

    Rc Booster

    Nova Delay

    Nova Modulator

    Nova Drive

    ISP Decimator

    TC Electronic Polytune

  • wow man, slow down....next time prepare with a fat J in the parking lot instead of a line off the toilet tank cover

  • Where should I put my noise suppressor and my whammy?

  • Wow! you sound very excited! :-D Thanks for the information in this video..very helpful.

  • this is my sequence as of now: Boss Tu-2, Crybaby Wah, Boss OD-3 (used many as a boost), Ibanez TS7, Boss AC-3, Boss DD-6

  • would it be ok if i put a tuner after a wah?

  • @poison806: If that's where you want to place it, that should be fine.

  • Hi. Your video was very useful and very amusing! I'm putting together a board using the following pedals, in this sequence. Noise Suppressor, Tuner, Blues Overdrive, Classic Tube Distortion, Chorus, Phaser, Digital Delay. Firstly, is this sequence ok? Secondly, I want to include a EQ700 and an Acoustic Simulator but where?

    Thanks in advance.

    56Ashman.

  • lol this guy is so energetic!!

  • youtube.com/watch?v=qHk_2WKORpM

In depth analysis and discussion of effect pedal order from CrowfeatheR.

  • where can i put an acoustic simulator like the boss ac-3 or the behringer am-400?

  • I have a Boss TU-2 /BD-2/ TR-2/DD7 and a PS-5 also an electro harmonix little big muff, a mxr dyna comp/ micro amp/ phase 90 and a classic dunlop cry baby.. they are 10 pedals..what would you suggest the order should be..thanks

  • ima bass player. and in situations where u use a wah while having distortion (cliff burton for example) what would the recommended order be?

  • get a line 6 amp , n you dont need that petal bull shit

  • What about volume pedal and boost pedals like the MXR micro amp or the electro harmonix LPB1, where should those be placed in the pedal chain?

  • WHY IS HE SHOUTING???!?

  • RMC Wah YESSSSSS! :)

  • I personally prefer my distortion pedal before my wah and then I throw an overdrive after it. I think the distortion helps to bring out the attack of the wah pedal better.

  • Hi! I have a boss loop station, a boss noise suppressor, a boss ME20, a boss acoustic simulator, a frequency box and a cry baby wah. What order do you think those should go? any recommendations for new pedals? Thanks. nice vid btw

  • very infoprmative tbh i really shoulda thought thisis just like common sense xD

  • it's ok, but u don't need to speak like and idiot -well unless u are one...

  • Great, but where do you think i should put fuzz pedals? Before or after the distortion?

For example, my pedals are, boss tuner, MXR Blue Box (Octave Fuzz) , Big Muff, Boss Turbo Distortion and Boss Chorus Ensemble...What would you suggest the order should be? Or would you have it the order i mentioned them?

    Thanks :)

  • @red3chilli - You may actually want to try your fuzzes before all your other pedals. You Boss TU-2 (tuner) has a buffer in it, and it is commonly preferred to not have a buffer before your fuzz. Fuzzes behave differently with buffers before them, so see what difference that makes. Also, if you're using them with a Distortion, try running the gain low on the fuzz. Otherwise, your order is good, with the Distortion after the fuzzes. Enjoy!

  • @alphamusicva Wait, wait, then how should it go?

  • I have an Boss ME20 can I put this into a chain effectively? should it be first in?

  • @Pembury8 - Depends on what you're using it for. Multi-Effect units can be tricky to incorporate into a pedal chain, but I would still generally put it where an Overdrive/Distortion pedal would go. Compression, Wah, Pitch, EQ before it and Modulation, Delay, Reverb, etc. after it. Have fun!

  • where would i put my digitech whammy pedal?

  • @anationsleeps - Try it early in your chain, before Overdrive/Distortion, where Pitch effects usually go. The only thing you may want to precede it is a Compressor.

  • awesome! i've been trying to figure that out for a while ahaha. thanks man.

  • Where would you place a compressor? Thanx

  • who whants that much delay way harsh

  • I also have a Boss Acoustic Simulator. Where in the chain is it best to have that? Thanks.

  • I would try it very early in your chain. Maybe only a tuner before that.

  • guys i need some help.

i have a Cry Baby Wah --> Boss Phase Shifter --> Ibanez Airplane Flanger --> Hardwire Delay in that order, and i have a really really really bad humming noise in the back ground when i'm not playing anything. even if i turn my guitar's volume off, the hum is still there.

should i buy a Boss Noise Suppresor or something similar? or is it the order thats the problem?

  • @wue2117 - When diagnosing any rig problems, the first thing to do is isolate the issue. Start removing pedals from you rig one-at-a-time until you find which one is causing the noise. Meaning, take out just one pedal, leaving the rest of your rig as it is. Sequence should not cause noise issues, although daisy chain power supplies can lead to ground loops which will cause a persistent hum...

  • ...If you can't remove the noise, then a Noise Suppressor would help. I just prefer finding the actual problem and solving it, instead of using a "band-aid".

  • cool, thanks for your help mate!!

  • im against flanger and chorus. pretty annoying

  • lol this was very entertaining. Okay i have a question, I have a Boss NS-2 Noise Suppressor and many other pedals, Dist, EQ, Mod, ect...

I want to get A Boss line selector but I am very hesitant i can make a set up with it because I'm already having my pedals run through the Noise Suppressor. Anyone with honorable experience can answer this...IS IT POSSIBLE TO HAVE BOTH THE LINE SELECTOR AND NOISE SUPPRESSOR?When I think about it i say no because i can't draw it out on paper.what do u think?

  • ok i need some help i wanna get some pedals just to experiment with....i have a fender super champ xd. its a tube but it has a real nice high gain pre set on it that is great for metal which is mostly what i play...now im wondering should i just put it in clean and get a destortion pedal with a tube od to boost it with. OR should i just stick with the metal sound i have and get something else to mess with to make my sound even better...thanks

  • you like the amps native distortion, so stick with it.

  • dude if you like the od channel on your amp then get a od pedal and put it infront of your already distorted ampm mess around with the settings. you will get some gnary overdrive tones , I recomend a ts-9 or a zw-44 for metal

  • so, where would a noise supressor go?

  • @TStouffer - Noise suppressors function well later in your chain, but you may want to keep it before your delay/reverb. It will function differently when you switch from a clean to a distorted tone, but it's typically only necessary with distortion anyways. If you're using your amp's overdrive, you may want to try it in your effects loop, but it works better with a serial/series loop than a parallel. Have fun!

  • nice video. I have different brands pedals that have different polarity. Is there a single PSU solution that can handle different polarity?

  • @coolwaterdvr - Most isolated power supplies, such as the Voodoo Lab Pedal Power or T-Rex Fuel Tank, can handle differing polarities just fine. Most include reverse polarity cables. However, Visual Sound's 1-Spot power supply does have an optional Reverse Polarity Converter that can be added on to the end of most standard barrel plug power cables.

  • having trouble finding where to put my ehx memory boy in my loop... it sounds way better by itself. my chain is as follows... tuner, distortion, chorus, flanger, vibro, memory boy, equalizer, loop station.

what am i doing wrong? why cant the memory boy do the same stuff with my distorted sound as it can when its the only pedal plugged into my amp cuz it does awesome stuff by itself.

  • @deadline27 - Your distortion can always affect how a unit sounds. That being said, your sequence seems appropriate, however you may want to experiment with the placement of your EQ. If you're using it to shape your tone, try it right after the tuner. If you're using it for a boost, try it right after your distortion...

  • @alphamusicva - Otherwise, the buffers in your pedals could be having an effect, so try isolating your pedals one at a time with the Memory Boy and see if one has more of an adverse effect than the others. That's always a great way to troubleshoot your rig as well! Also, the Memory Boy is a unit that may work better in your effects loop if your amp has one.

  • thank you very much for your advice

  • where would the equalizer go?

  • @chancewaak - Depending on your intended usage of the EQ, it can go in several places in your chain. But, in general, if you're using it to shape your overall tone, it should fall early in your chain. Typically right before your distortion. However, if you're using it as a boost, it will function better after your distortion. Hope that helps!

  • hey, could you please tell me where in the chain it would sound good to place pitch effecting pedals such as Octave pedals, whammys, pitch shifters, harmonizers etc, oh and also Tremolo. I dont know whether that would fall under modulation or not. Thanks,

    Ryan

  • I would recommend that the pitch affecting effects like the whammys and octaves before your dist... tremolos would go with the modulations... you were right

  • @ryanosgeetar12 - Pitch pedals are ideal at the beginning of your chain. Using them after a tuner that has a buffer (such as a Boss TU-2) may help with their tracking, but they still function best with a clean, un-effected signal, so it should be the first unit after your tuner. Tremolo can be treated as a gain or modulation unit, depending on your usage. Try it both ways to find out which sounds better with your rig. It's very subjective.

  • id never check the website just coz of how nerdy this was.

  • i'm gonna flip my wah and play it backwards!!!!!!!!

    that'll be sick

  • What About Compressor Pedal Videos?

  • I'd recommend the Seymore Duncan Twin Tube Classic over the DS-1, for overdrive and distortion. Great sounds for all types of Rock, Blues and Country. Actually don't have it in any of my vids but truly is a monster pedal check YouTube video demos!

  • I just bought a boss DD-7 delay. It can loop. When I try to loop it clean, and then add another loop w/ distortion, it distorts the part I already looped. I use the amp's natural distortion, but I have a footswitch. The problem is that the footswitch only has an output, not an input, so I can't switch the order of my chain. Any help? Or do I need to buy a distortion pedal?

  • As I've said before, your signal is directional. It only goes from guitar to amp, not the other way around. Always remember this and a little common sense will help you determine appropriate pedal sequence. Your amp is processing whatever audio signal you put into it, including a loop. It can't determine the difference. Plus, your footswitch is simply switching amp channels remotely, not producing distortion itself.

  • The only way to use your amp's distortion in this setup is to put the DD7 in your effects loop, which will put it after your amp's distortion circuit. Otherwise, get a distortion pedal and place it before your looper in your signal chain. Have fun!

  • Thank you, do you recommend a certain distortion pedal that will last me a while and sounds real and natural? The DS-1 sounds okay it just seems a little cheap for such a solid pedal.

  • It depends vastly on the type of sound you want. If you want something that sounds really natural, consider an Overdrive. But, they won't get quite as heavy, so if you want a lot of gain then try a Distortion. There are few pedals that fall in between, such as the MXR Distorion III, T-Rex Mudhoney, and (most notably) the Z Vex Box of Rock. There are a lot of others, so head down to your local guitar shop and check some out. Or find online demos, since they exist for many pedals now.

  • did i set up me pedals right?

guitar cable amp to multieffect/tuner,thats connected to ds-1 distortion, and thats connected to a chorus, and chorus output into my guitar?

  • One thing to remember is: your chain is directional. Signal only goes from guitar to amp, not the other way around. Some guitarists use chorus pedals before their distortion, but it's more common after your distortion. In all honesty, if you like the sound of your setup as it is, then that's correct. It's all and always subjective.

  • But, my initial suggestion would be: guitar -> DS-1 -> Chorus -> Multi-Effect -> Amp. I assume you meant your tuner was in your multi pedal. Otherwise, run your tuner first before your distortion. Now, go forth and rock!

  • yea i played around with it for a while with which order i should put it,and the way i put it makes the distortion and choruys sound good

  • i love how the holy grail is just sitting there unplugged!! lol Great vid 5*'s

  • Great vid but i got a question i only use three pedals in my set-up (Cry Baby Classic, a Mucho Boosto OD And a spring Chicken Reverb) and i need somthing to power them what would you suggest? seeing as i dont have many to power?

  • Hi, can anyone tell me where a loop station would go? It would be appreciated. And awesome vid it helped a lot.

  • Typically Loop Stations should be the last pedal in your chain. The reason for this is, any effects after the pedal will be put on the recorded loops and your live signal, generally compressing them together and making it harder to hear the separation between individual loops. This is especially true with distortion, such as using the distortion on your amp with the pedal out front.

  • 2nd part - Depending on your setup and sound, you may want to run one or two pedals after the looper, but I recommend running it after everything. If you're using your amp's distortion, you may need to put it in the effects loop, but this will only work if (a) your effects loop runs at instrument level or has a switch to change levels and (b) you have a series loop or a mix control where you can run it 100% wet. Good luck, enjoy looping!

  • where would you suggest a multi effects pedal go?

  • Depending on what other pedals you're using, a multi-effect pedal's proper position can vary. Consider what effects you use the most on the pedal and then what their position would be if they were individual stomp boxes. If you need more help, let me know what other effects you're using. But, as always, feel free to experiment with your order and find what works best for your setup!

  • wow this helped me so much thanks :)

  • where would a volume pedal go??

  • Where should a Whammy, an Acoustic Simulator and a Noise Suppressor go ... please help me! :D

  • Treat your Whammy like an Octave or Pitch unit and put it towards the front of your chain, maybe only after your tuner. Your Acoustic Simulator is an advanced EQ, so that should go next, but before Compressor, Overdrive, or Distortion. As before, your Noise Suppressor should be at the end of your chain, but generally before Volume, Delay, or Reverb pedals.

  • Thanks a lot man :D

  • Im not sure if anone has said this already, but Od/dist before Wah = more room to Wah on.

    BBE boosta grande>Digitech Grunge>(basic)Crybaby Wah>Behringer X V amp.

(I use the X V amp for Chorus Delay and Octave only)

  • is this a good order, or how whould u set these: boss: tuner->compressor/sustainer->overdrive/distortion->reverb->noise gate....

and would annyone use the effectsloop for these pedals (got a 6505)

    thx

  • That's a pretty good order right there, but try switching the Reverb and Noise Gate. Noise Gates can take care of the most noise later in the chain, but can hurt the decay of a Delay or Reverb unit, so they work better before those. Those two pedals may work well in your effects loop, but the others should stay out front. Different effects loops work at different levels, line level and instrument level.

  • Some loops have a level control (knob or switch) to work with different types of units, but if it does not it may only be intended for line level (rack mounts, mostly) or instrument level (pedals). Good luck!

  • awsome vid very helpful. and it made me laugh! :D

  • Thanks for posting! Where would you put the Boss Tu-2 Chromatic Tuner in the chain? Appreciate any help on this...

  • Most players prefer their tuner at the beginning of their chain. The first pedal after your guitar. Thanks for the question!!

  • dude thats the first thing he talks about... did you even watch the video? he even uses a TU-2 (!)

  • Thanks for watching!

  • what if he always speaks like adam from mythbusters + a 500 pax audience + 50 db + 5.0 grammes of cocaine.

  • I like to put chorus in front of OD if I have the speed low..

  • Dude, you should not smoke opium before making videos ;)

Anyway, very helpful vid. Thanks! :)

  • it helps me a lot! keep rocking and tnx!

  • and where should the loop go?

  • at the end probably

  • is send the place where you plug the first pedal first? (tuner)

and is return wher you plug the last pedal? (delay)

  • nice video again! sir please give me suggestion to arrange my sound better. I'm very confused how to arrange it in the best order so it won't affect my tone. I have overdrive, distortion, reverb,de lay, acoustic stimulator, chorus, compression sustainer, noise supressor and wah wah pedal. it would be very helpful!thanks

  • Try placing your pedals in the following order - Compressor, Acoustic Simulator, Wah Wah, Overdrive, Distortion, Chorus, Noise Supressor, Delay, Reverb. Using this many pedals, especially if they are all buffered (i.e. Boss, Digitech, Ibanez, etc.) will certainly have a huge impact on your tone.

  • "the guitar was off!"

  • I'm getting some peddles from you guys soon...thank god for student only sales! hahaha thanks for this.

    later,

    Will

  • How would you suggest that I set these up:

    tc electronic nova system

    line 6 dl4

    boss pitch shifter/delay

boss FDR (fender deluxe reverb pedal)

    ibanez tube screamer

    Duncan crybaby

    Thanks!

  • if you have a tuner, that is first. second is a wah. then all of the distortions you have, then the delays, reverb, and any other effects, but the dl4 goes all the was last on the chain

  • dude you are a regular adam from mythbusters. this video rocks. helped me out. thanks a ton!

  • alpha rocks

  • where do sustainer pedals and noise gates go?

  • Compression/Sustain pedals usually function best early in your pedal chain. Try placing it first in your chain. If you have it later in your chain, the pedals before it may affect how it functions. Noise Gates will be better later in your chain, after Overdrives, Distortions, Modulation (Chorus, Flanger, Phaser), EQ, etc., but before Reverb or Delay. That way, it will eliminate any noise caused by those pedals. Good luck!

  • Great video, hi which one better put the reverb at last or delay? thanks.

  • I've got a digitech whammy IV, a big muff pi, a boss tu 2 and an electro harmonix lpb1 (boost pedal), could you help me out with the sequence? i need the boost because the whammy really drains the volume when you're using it.

  • For these pedals, I would suggest going (from guitar to amp) TU-2, Whammy, Big Muff, then LPB-1. Typically, the Whammy shouldn't drain your signal much, but all rigs react differently. Hopefully this order works out well for you! -Micah

  • THANKS!! You should make some more vids! they're pretty good.

  • Thnaks man!! We will make more in the future so make sure and subscribe to our videos.

  • where does a tremolo go?

  • Treat your Tremolo pedal as any other modulation pedal, like Chorus, Flanger, Phaser, etc. It will go after your Overdrive/Distortion, but before Delay/Reverb. Other than that, it's a preference to where you think it sounds best if you're already running a Chorus or other modulation pedal. Though, I would try putting it after Chorus, but before Flanger or Phaser.

  • Is this a good pedal chain? (All BOSS pedals, except the wha) Tuner, Wha, Acoustic Simulator, Metal Zone, Overdrive, Phase shifter, Chorus, Equalizer, Delay? Do I need anything else? Maybe a volume pedal? Help me out please.

  • That sounds like a good setup and proper order, although you may want to try putting your EQ after your Overdrive, but before your Phase Shifter. Virtually all Boss pedals have a buffer in their circuit, so if you run a long chain of them you can get a bit of noise and hiss. If that's the case, try picking up a Noise Supressor/Gate to go in your chain. Effects Loops can be very useful (thats the "Send" and "Return" jacks on your amp)...

  • Time-based effects should go in your loop (Chorus, Phaser, Delay, Reverb, etc.), but keep your Overdrive, Distortion, Acoustic Sim., Wah, EQ, etc. out front. It is not necessary to use your loop, but it can improve your sound, especially if you use the distortion on your amp at all. Using standard instrument cables, the "Send" on your amp should go to the "Input" of the pedals you're using with it. Then, the "Output" of those pedals should go back to the "Return" on your amp...

  • Signal is always directional, from your guitar to your amp, not the other way around, so keep that in mind when you're hooking this stuff up. It's sending your signal from the amp to the pedals, then returning from your pedals back to your amp. And, yes, you can run just one effect through the loop, such as Delay. A Volume Pedal could be a lot of fun to add into your setup. Most people run their Volume pedal after all effects except Delay, but nothing is written in stone about this...

  • Remember, if it's before any kind of Overdrive or Distortion (even amp distortion) it will reduce your gain before your volume, effectively cleaning up your signal instead of just instantly dropping the volume. Hope this helps!

  • Where do I put the volume pedal in the chain? Does it go before the tuner?

  • Positioning of your Volume Pedal in your chain is mostly and issue of preference. Many players keep it after all pedals except Delay and Reverb. It depends, really, on your application. If you want to decrease the GAIN in your signal, such as cleaning up distortion, then put it early in the chain. Many Volume Pedals have a tuner output, so you can run a signal to your tuner, without your affecting your guitar signal going to your amp...

  • veryyy helpful

    thank you VERY much

  • i use the jekyll and hyde od/distortion pedal =]

  • great vid. Alot of good advice
