James Lovelock (born 26 July 1919 - died 13 March 2015) was an independent scientist, environmentalist and futurologist from England. He is best known for proposing the Gaia hypothesis, which postulates that the biosphere is a self-regulating entity with the capacity to keep our planet healthy by controlling the chemical and physical environment.

He also refers to the few people who will survive the coming apocalypse, huddled near the poles, as "breeding pairs". Who the hell refers to human beings in those terms? There seems to be an unconscious strain of misanthropy in his writings of late.
Lovelock is a brilliant scientist but I have multiple issues with his ideas. He isn't the best person to talk to regarding social and political responses to crises, given that it's not his area of expertise - e.g. he regards humans as a "disease" of Gaia with 'Original Sin' undertones. In addition, I wonder if he, at the age of 89 in this interview, is projecting his own mortality onto that of our species.

He isn't the best person to talk to regarding social and political responses to crises, given that it's not his area of expertise - e.g. he regards humans as a "disease" of Gaia with 'Original Sin' undertones. In addition, I wonder if he, at the age of 89 in this interview, is projecting his own mortality onto that of our species.

Think about the upward spike in carbon in the atmosphere right now, and consider the most likely response in global temperature. Given that the data comes from ice samples that go back tens of thousands of years, and the two graphs are so closely aligned, it is a compelling argument for Lovelock's warnings.
