I love the "singing" the alto player did in back of the vibes solo. Our high school band back in 1951-52 played this tune along with some other comtemporary ones. I played baritone and the lead alto told me once during "sectionals" that I was playing too loud and ought to cool down. Loveeddd it all!! Still do. What great musicians we had then back in Detroit, Michigan. Thanks to whomever posted this.
Have you ever heard anything better than this? This brings back such great memories. Stan Getz was one of my all-time favorites. I'd always try to catch him when he was in New York. This was the tune that made him a star when he was only about twenty years old. Of course, this was the Herd that had the fabled "Four Brothers." Brother, what music!
@travelomania ∽∽ For me too, mate, from here to eternity. This is one of the perfectest, one of the most beautiful charts in the history of the big bands. It all fits together, the arranged, and the improvised parts. It's pure beautifulness, as Stan's biggest influence, Lester 'Pres' Young has put it once.
I used to play in a little swing dance band that played this.. I remember one day this chart was called and the lead alto player (a very, very talented musician - and he knew it) was told to "Play it like Woody" to which he replied " You know I can't play that shitty" lol
@spiffydude16 - in other words, your lead alto player can't make his horn sing. I hate the modern sound of lead alto. The instrument ain't played like it used to be..
Well, Otaku, thank you . . . and StevieB . . . if you want the '70's pieces, hunt down the album/CD "The Raven Speaks". It was issued about the same time that I saw the band at The Great American Music Hall in San Francisco in '76. Unforgettable night! . . . Sadly, the circumstances of Herman's death are a blot and a disgrace on American music . . . after all he gave us . . . he died with the bill collector LITERALLY beating on the door! . . . Gary in Arizona . . .courtesy of Vic
Thanks. Wish there was more of Woody's later stuff from the 70's. My Cherie Amour; A Stone Called Person; I attended a clinic he put on with his band in Oklahoma City when I was in Jr. High back in the early 70's. How great that he & his band would take time out to teach a bunch of youngsters. So impressive it stayed with me all my life. I always held him I high regard for that.
Thanks again 60Otak A really great version and once more reminds us all of what real music was AND just what we have all lost. I think though that it died through the costs of big bands, and it's possible now that there could be a re-emergence if someone was brave enough to do ti. The kids in UNI would take to it like ducks to water ?
@teazle2 . I would love to believe your prediction is right, but sadly I cannot.
At today's pay rates, a band like this would have to stay put in one region, like LA -Vegas or Atlantic City - New York. And who is willing to pay the dues required to play like Getz? Zoot Sims? A contemporary act like this could mostly cover historical material, but would also need some new compositions. Who will do them?
Why this music is getting so little exposure today is beyond me. Woody had only the best players and arrangers even by todays standard. The problem was that about 75% were hitting drugs.
I listened at this melody in the end of the 60th: s century. In the Konsthallen 1978 in Malmoe, a sucessfully consert. Woody Herman a wonderful leader of the orchestra, who has taken over the whole world. I hope to his music going to in many years.
My favorite all-time arrangement of this....this proves that Herman's bands were the equal of anything in the biz. Ralph Burns later did all the music for the movie "New York, New York" with Robert DeNiro playing a Georgie Auld-type saxplayer/lunatic who winds up with Liza Minelli, who plays a Liza-Minelli stereotype........
This tune has a powerful pedigree. The sax solo is by the young Stan Getz. The composition was in part by Ralph Burns, who later had a big career on Broadway and Hollywood as a conductor and arranger.
@alnot01 Did Ralph Burns do the arrangement? Did he do all the arrangements on the album? Trying to track it down - any idea where i can get the LP or CD. Live in the south of France - lot of sun and fun, but very difficult to get hold of these musical gems. So any help greatly appreciated!
@hommefriday : Ralph Burns did a lot of arranging for the Herd in those days. When Early Autumn came out, in 1949, LPs barely existed. Check out Woody Herman's music on Amazon; it's a lot easier to buy jazz records now than in our youth. Also, Paris surely has 2-3 great jazz record shops.
The words are by the great Johnny Mercer. The music is by someone I haven't heard of, Ralph Burns, and... Woody Herman himself. It was a big hit for Herman in 1949 and for Jo Stafford in 1952. The 4 Freshmen recorded it in 2005. Woody's recording here is straight ahead Big Band, not jazz because there's no improv.
I used to run home from school in the lunch break just to hear this tune played over the BBC TV test card (about 1954 when we first got a telly). I never knew what this tune was called until many years later. I still love it.
Beautiful music at its best! Thanks for accepting my video response. Send me a video response if you like and I'll put your video in our response section.

Certainly the finest orchestral version of this chestnut. When you want lyrics, listen to the underappreciated Miss Jo Stafford. And that reminds me,why are all of the great American musical artists hiding? If they are waiting for an invitation, they'll wait a long time. Get this music out there!!! NOW! REGARDLESS! You WILL have a following among us! The fat lady hasn't sung yet. Today's so-called music sounds as though it's played with weapons instead of instruments.
