@albionpubrider this is the theme of the concluding movement of the 5th harpsichord suite (HWV 430) in E major. it was published in 1720 but the theme got her name almost 100 years after the original publication. haendel himself wrote a set of variations on the same theme .
@wukangmin i have to disagree about the remark about pepe.
i agree that pepe doesnt do many color changes but i think too much rubato is too much. as you may know rubato is a staple of the romantic era. no doubt that giulio is an extraordinary guitarist; he is amazing. but comparing musicians is one of the most disturbing things i have realized about the classical music scene after 3 years of studying at the university. we should be more individual.
@MrSoomsoom pepe is one of my favorite guitarist too. Well, I didn't mean the theme and variation 1 is good. Actually I agree with you on that too much rubato. But the rest part is fascinating, the strength, the speed
It´s good that there are few guitarrists with this class of musicianship, otherwise, the guitar world would be so flooded with light we´d all go blind. Where does guitar playing go from here? Segovia may have been the first question, but I almost have the impression Mr. Tampalini is the last answer. Case closed. Good night, the show´s over, time to go home. Just kidding. Let others know about this guy, too few comments.
I don' really agree with you Jjjjkl. Of course this piece is rather hard to play, but played very slowy, it could be an excellent exercice for a medium player.
bravo!!!

I wonder how difficult this piece is rated? It's fabulous... Could a beginner even attempt this?
NurnIrl 4 years ago
It's a Royal Conservatory Of Music grade 10 piece (second highest grade). I'd advise a beginner not to attempt it.

Dear 1050,Part 2...On youtube Peo Kindgren is the only other guitarist other than Giulio as of Aug
2007 who plays in a full human way.Go to my favorites
to find other instrumentalists who will touch you.
By the way,Peo plays Barrios and Coste with great beauty as Guilio plays Guiliani here.Best Wishes
and god bless Giulio

Thanks
i have a question what do you think about Stefano Gordona's playing there are videos of him on this site
guitar1050 4 years ago
i made a mistake in the name its Grondona
guitar1050 4 years ago
Dear 1050, I'm very familiar with Stefano's playing having served on a faculty with him at Antwerpen in 1994.
His playing is the consistently the best classical guitar playing I have ever heard. His interpretation & technique R always a near perfect fully human
thing. But I've never heard him play this repertoire,
as I do not think that he has the temperment or
liking for it.

Very nice! Ive never heard this piece and I think it sounds amazing! Good job.

My God!...What is going on here?
For decades I have detested this piece, dreading
one more classical guitarist's recital of it.
In Tampalini's hands it sounds like the greatest
revelation of deep human truth possible.
Every phrase is clear sonically and spiritually.
MOLTO BRAVISSIMO!!!!

Maestro Smith: you´ve made your first point. This is astonishing playing. I will investigate your leads.
peplicus 4 years ago
Dear Peplicus,I am so excited that you can hear how
absolutely Fabulous Giulio's playing is.Isbin,Russell,
Fisk,and 99.9% of all the 'classical'musicians should
be put in a jail with Giulio in charge. They should
only be let out only when they can show Maestro
Giulio that they have learned from him what music
can be.If Giulio were in charge of the music
world, think how beautiful it would be.

Smith i have to agree with you
I too have always disliked this piece until i heard this performance.
what other guitarists do you recommend to listen to?
guitar1050 4 years ago
Dear 1050,I'm the 1 guitarist I have ever heard who plays this repertoire well other than Giulio.
I'm recording an album of Giuliani in late Winter
on a 10 string from the 1780s using historic
interpretive technique based on italian Opera recordings from 100 years ago.I'll post the videos
on youtube.Part 1

Really brilliant performance by an outstanding artist who seems to have no need of watching his left hand!
Suppose the tone is strengthened by the acousticts. A great instrument, would like to know details.
Betelgeuzus 5 years ago
The original theme is called "Harmonius Blacksmith", by haendel as it says.
