When my student and I were invited to the Columbia medical school to see this instrument we made a pilgrimage to Manhattan posthaste.
The Steinway is kept under lock and key in a practice room. Thanks to the size of the room and open lid, the sound was powerful even when one played leggiero and/or una corda. But I suspect the piano would be obstreperous even in a concert hall. Did it, one wonders, display a kinder, gentler personality in Rachmaninoff's day?
Bravo Melvin! Great fingers have gone before you on this piano.

there's really no surprise that this is rachmaninoff's piano...don't think he'd own one that sounded any different than this.
