You answered your own question. This was before all the changes/nerfs were made to the fight. A common strategy at the time was to have a healer taunt and sacrifice himself to solo-soak a cleave to buy the raid more free DPS time. You can see it happening in quite a few of the earlier kill videos like the Exodus one as well.
+1 if all you did was watch the fire elemental run back and forth.
