I'm a newbie to microwave nation. I have questions - the microwave was on less than 5 seconds before the sand converted the microwaves to a pile of whole electron volts - at least I think that's what that flash was. The whole mass of sand, even the stuff that was free falling, polarized and started to get really hot. The hourglass wasn't affected at all Pyrex or 22% lead crystal? Then all of the sand goes to the bottom and starts to acrete as the individual grains melt. What was the 'sand'?
