  • john's playing a left handed guitar, but his right handed. kudos. :)

  • The only problem with him playing a left-handed guitar strung like a right-handed, would be that he can't change the pick-ups/the tone on the go.

  • One of is personal Strat is right handed with a left handed headstock, it's NOT a lefty upside down

  • @labcity That guitar is quite clearly a left handed one.

  • @Aardvarked88 i'm not debating that, i'm saying his actual one that he owns personally just has the reverse headstock

  • I wonder if Rob Thomas knew this was the last time anyone would remember him unless they were comparing him to John Mayer

  • john already extremely masters the guitar back and forth so i guess when he's bored, he plays with a left handed guitar to give himself a challenge. even then, he masters the left handed guitar as well. HAHAHA I LOVE HIM! <3

  • @aliceinwonderland465 Huh? He plays righty guitar and always has. Sometimes he uses a lefty guitar and reverses the strings and plays it revers as a righty. There is no challenge.

  • @aliceinwonderland465 Well, it's strung like a right-handed guitar. :P.

  • @kyleofnky4 It's definitely strung righty. You can tell from the shape of his hand and the chords. But if you need further convincing, /watch?v=Gz6eEvcm7qI

  • He probably switched the strings over so he could finger it regularly

  • @thomasamagne

actually he didnt, as a musician i can tell you the way he is playing he didnt make the strings standard. Matt beck, the keyboardist (plays multiple instruments for rob and also matchbox) he is left handed. Mayer is playing one of his guitars.

  • God, i love both John Mayer and Rob Thomas! They have a bit similar voice. Sounds awesome!

  • Comment removed

  • @Gassiba lol their voices sound NOTHING alike. If by similar you mean that they are both unique and superior then I could see that.

  • they are few singers of todays generation could really sing songs of before without harming its essence.... collaboration works wonders...

  • holy shit. johns playing the strat upside down. I dont think hes atually playing it like literally upside down. i think he just changed the string patters. cuz if u look close hes throwing in some powerchords every now and then.

  • @miguelelias1 The guy that is playing the keyboard at 0:25 also plays for Rob -- a right handed guitar upside down (he's a lefty). Might have something to do with it. See this video to see what I'm talking about: igxBjFpkUXA

  • This Is Like My Favorite Song!! Now I Love It Even More :)

  • where am i in times like these?

  • i luvvv rob and luv hearing him do this song... i heard him sing this live at Mohegan Sun on 12/18/09 but watching this video and seeing these ppl not watching and paying attention makes me crazy ugh how could u be so fortunate to be there then look around like duh where am i

  • SO Rare ! Love these two fellas you guys ROCK!

  • holy shitt. i love these two guys!

  • Just to give you a little bit of hint, search the 60's there was a left handed dude, who played a right handed strat upside down. that might be a tribute to him

  • @aydeeT

yeah.... kinda cheezzy in my opinion. he shouldnt even put himself in the same ballpark as Jimi Hendrix

  • @twoshadyg There's lots of guitarists out there who aren't at Mayer's level who do that because they want to pay tribute to the greatest guitarist who ever lived. Mayer's a great guitarist, but he's definitely not trying to put himself in the same league as Jimi Hendrix. Don't be so cynical.

  • @aydeeT hahaha. love it.

  • @aydeeT bruce lee? lol.. hendrix used a right handed strat because there werent as many left handed strats back then.

  • @kisay69 omg youre the first to realize who I meant exactly! lol.

trivia fact. clapton bought a left hand strat for hendrix then he heard the sad news a couple of days. they both were gonna play in a festival in the uk and slowhand was planning to give it to him that day. he never got to do that.

  • @aydeeT yep..exactly

  • @aydeeT Can anyone say, er, PAUL?

    Yep.

  • @aydeeT fender made a strat called the jimi hendrix voo doo strat in the early 2000's .. its def a tribute to hendrix because i own one as a righty, and its a pain in the fuckin ass... looks cool , but not too practical

  • Rob Thomas and John Mayer? I wish I had gone to this concert!!!

  • its 100% a left handed guitar, are you 100% its strung right handed though/ i doubt it there is no reason for a right handed player to buy a left handed guitar when there is less of a option of gutiars for left handed people and they cost more.

  • Hes John Mayer he can do whatever he wants, i doubt he knows how to play a guitar backwords perfectly tho

  • It's not hard what he's playing so he could easily hope i'm left handed and can get by playing right handed strung guitars sometimes. And it is 100% left handed because its a member of thomas' backing band who was left handed

  • It actually gives it a completely different tone.

  • no it doesnt at all, especially if you reverse how you use your stoking parttern mostly using up strokes which would be down stroked on a reversed guitar

  • No, the strings are strung like they would be on a right handed guitar. And due to the fact that it has that stratocaster headstock the 6th string has much more tension on it than it normally would and vice versa with all other strings. It produces a much different tone from a regular right handed strat.

  • Yeah its a left handed guitar with a left handed headstock, so strung left handed would avoid what you said. so yes i am right. thank you.

  • Why would he string it left handed when he plays right handed. I believe you don't know what you're talking about -.-

  • I believe you don't know what youre talking about. It's not mayers guitar, its one of thomas' backing bands, well ex backing band members guitar, who is left handed

  • Then why is he playing it like a right handed guitar -.-

  • @kinney1990 no he knows what he is talking about because john always flipps his guiars like that because of Jimi Hendrix.

  • no he doesnt believe me im a hige john mayer fan, yes he own a cople of guitars with a reverse headstock in a nod to jimi but her certainly doesnt flit his guitars. jimi is one of his idols but his inspiration without a doubt is stevie ray vaughn

  • @LSO92 because he wants to play in the style of Jimi Hendrix who happens to be his inspiration.

  • @kinney1990 yes but it isnt strung left handed is it. which was the point that LS092 made.

  • @kinney1990 yes it does. however slightly it will change the tone

  • Ok, The gentleman playing keyboards is Matt Beck, he is a friend of mine. He happens to be the guitarist for Matchbox Twenty and Rob Thomas. He ALSO plays keyboard. Interesting fact about Matt, he's lefty...learned on a right handed guitar he held upside down. That's how he plays, so he has Lefty guitars, for comfort, but they're strung righty. John is playing Matt's guitar. THAT is why John Mayer is playing a left handed guitar strung righty.

  • @RandyWillcox Way to ruin it for everybody! **BUZZKILL**

  • My two favorite people ever.

  • aaaa geniusn !!!

  • it is a left handed guitar, not just a reverse headstock and jimi hendrix played a right handed guitar left handed not a reverse headstock

  • thats a left handed guitar clearly, look at the body of it

  • yeah, that's not a left-handed guitar at all. it's just a reverse headstock. jimi hendrix played a guitar with a reverse headstock.

  • i'm pretty sure that rob thomas' guitarist is a lefty... john probably just popped by and jammed lol and thats definitely a left handed guitar.

and i always thought jimi hendrix was too poor to afford a lefty guitar so he just strung it the other way around and flipped the guitar? i might be wrong...

  • dude, Mayer and Rob Thomas! holy crap

  • What kind crowd is this?!?! Such an awesome performance and they are acting like its NOTHING!

  • why would you not be watching them jam...?????

  • Bullshit audience...

  • That's awesome. Rob's regular guitar player is left handed but learned to play with the little strings on top and big strings on bottom so John was able to pick it up (very highly) and play it regular. A lot of lefty guitar players learn to play that way, it's crazy to me but pretty awesome!

  • yeah he plays a reverse headstock as one of his "signatures" but actually to emulate the hendrix sound. obvs not needed in this instance but yeah

  • hes playing a regular guitar its not upside down just a reverse headstock

  • does anybody remember that john meyer also sings i mean they could have shared the song , it seems like such a waste to have john there and not have him sing anybody can play the guitar.

  • i dont think certian people with arthritis can play the guitar

  • Look smart guy, you know exactly what i meant.

"I DON'T THINK CERTAIN PEOPLE WITH ARTHRITIS CAN PLAY GUITAR"

    well niether can a ....

    one handed person

    or....

I can't think of anything else but you get my point.

    YOUR COMMENT WAS COMPLETLY REDUNDANT.

  • haah yeah i know just wanted to get across that playing the guitar isnt as simple as picking it up :)

also redundant would imply that what ever i typed didnt add to what was said

what i said wasnt redundant it was more ...unduly literal

  • You're right playing the guitar isn't as simple as picking it up but.. it's a start.

.. Unduly literal?? Never heard that one before

Great job webster u just proved me wrong

  • agreed

and my vocab is very odd i know alot of words and i forget them in an instant

    and thnk you

atleast it was a civil conversation which i enjoy much more than others

  • you are ignorant

  • how am I ignorant? Do you even know the meaning of the word? It doesn't apply here moron.

  • Check out the Rob Thomas covers on ZipZapTV

  • bravo!

  • Mayer and Thomas should play some more together

  • mayer plays guitar on rob thomas's streetcorner symphony song

  • ROB IS GOD

  • that is abit to much!! hahah but ya rob thomas is the best!!

  • this is so cool! i like john mayer but i LOOOVE rob thomas, and this is a great cover ( how could it not be with those two?)

  • very cool sounds awesome

  • I just can't understand why people are surprised he plays the left guitar. ITS STRINGS ARE IN THE RIGHT WAY. It's just like he's playing a normal guitar. It makes no diference for any player

  • no its not, i think he said something about the left guitar before the song

  • john mayer has major talent, i don't see why people hate on him so much.

  • i dont think they can comprehend it. they see it one tiny slice at a time, and feel they can validate a "artistic judgement call" lets call it lmao. but you put everything together and its a pretty damn big picture. impressive talent. not everyone can face that and still feel secure with themselves i guess.

  • i personally think it's jealous, i mean:

    1) the guy's wealthy

    2) he's an amazing guitar player

    3) he's played with major blues greats and has their respect

    4) he dated jessica simpson

    5) all the girls find him good looking

    6) he's popular

    seriously, who wouldn't be jealous?

  • lol thats totally it man. they cant face all that at once and "let it slide". to me i just know i like him, and all of the incidental bonuses in life that he gets to enjoy are just proofs that he's gotta be onto something. the very person they are getting schooled by at life...and they skip class lol

  • 2 of my favorite Artists..EVER!!!!!!!!!!! Together... (man i lov ethis..) i dont like the song that they are singing, but i am still excited to see them together singing. I guess im so excited because im picturing in my mind the capabilities of these two guys if they sang a really good song. MY GOD!! I CANT EVEN FATHOM IT.. (now if i can get john mayer to work with jason mraz., that will be heaven on earth) JOHN AND JASON..FOR 2010..WOO HOOO!!

  • well although he didnt sing on it, he played guitar on robs last album on street corner symphony.

  • my father plays guitar that way

  • what a combo!

  • Two amazing musicians. Rob Thomas is the only man I would ever make love to. He warms my heart.

  • you'd be one lonely woman

  • Comment removed

  • best video of these two is the making of come on over, streetcorner symphony. I can't find it now. Great stuff

  • I cant find the video of them making streetcorner symphony either. Its a shame because thats genius at work in that studio.

  • Two amazing musicians on that stage right there. Nice!

  • Man I love it. I love to hear/see Rob sing old stuff. Never seen the two together before thats awesome.

  • wow this was great. two of my favorite artists together again! john is such a talented guitar player.

  • Nice!

  • yea thats a righty guitar

  • oh my god !!!!!!!!

  • i wish john would have sang too...

  • haha wowie! great to see john's still alive

  • It looks like a left handed guitar, but I think it's a left handed guitar body but the strings are wound for a righty. But that is from my perspective of the video and the author says it was a left-handed guitar. Thanks for the great recording!

  • Yeah it was strung right handed. John himself said on the radio show that it was a left handed guitar strung right handed...

  • someone should of told that beast thing to sit down...

  • I love this video

  • Two of my fav's together for a good cause---gotta love them!!!!

  • Love to see the "big guys" still doing small benefit concerts. Merry Christmas Rob & John.
