Second, the comments at the end about government intervention were way off. I'm sorry but the libertarian "Market will fix all" ideas are a religion in their own right. Government is very capable of doing some things much better than anyone else. Look at the healthcare debate. We rank 37th in the world behind every other industrialized nation that has government health care. Government intervention in science has resulted in some of our most profound discoveries and achievements.
You were specific in your claims of government intervening in the current recession. Well, look at someplace like Germany. They had WAY more government intervention and the worldwide recession hit them much less severely. You need to take what you say about religion and apply that to your own free market beliefs.
@jrdworak so true... i live in germany but they want to copy more american capitalism now, so we have more crime and more poverty in this phase. but this party which is in the parliament now and is the most pro american capitalism would have (if there were votes) only 2% of the votes because people see that this isnt working and it isnt.. thats why your country wont be a world dominating power anymore but china.. i love usa but what they are doing with the country is just shit..
@jrdworak we have to thank your president Franklin D. Roosevelt for our country, he has build. his ideas took germany from a destroyed country to a very stabil economy and high growth economy because of his social movements in germany. R. I. P. he died way to early because he could have changed usa for a better and stronger economy, not corrupt and thats the problem. in your country, there are way to much greedy people who dont produce anything useful for society and live on the society cost
A few things stood out in this video for me. First, as a high school math teacher, critical thinking is an important skill that should be stressed. I try to get kids to question assumptions and data whenever possible. One example off the top of my head, it never fails I'll catch a kid writing numbers out in their notebook. "A teacher offered to give you an A if you write from 1 to 1,000,000 right?" I'll ask. It gives me a good place to go over just how big 1M is and how long it will take them.
jay leno also asked who lives at 1600 pennsylvania ave and people didn't know and then he he asked them who lives in a pineapple under the sea and they responded with glee sponge bob!
My mom's room mate recently picked me up at my boyfriend's house, and she saw him for the first time, but even after I hugged him goodbye she asked "who's that?" and when I said "that's my BF" she said "oh, I always pictured him as a white guy!"
We are talking about America, critical thinking is not an American value.
Critical thinking will never again be important in American public schools. If you want your kid to not be a drooling idiot, i suggest you homeschool him and keep all the religious and jingoistic bullshit out.
@TheDeistAngle So...you want drooling idiots to teach their own children? Think about it. Everyone cannot provide a quality education for their children. I would not even suggest homeschooling unless you are a teacher yourself. Hey...why don't you let your mom perform your next brain surgery? That's the kind of logic you are using here. Today...teachers are required to teach to the test. If you want change, complaining to the teachers or schools will not work. Go higher up.
Maybe I'm just cynical, but it seems to me that teaching critical thinking is antithetical to the goals of the educational system. Grades K-12 are more akin to obedience school than anything else. The purpose of schools isn't to teach kids how to think, it's to keep them from being able to think.
Critical thinking while important may set you up to be mediocre, strategic and holistic thinking is much better and well do students much more justice, Google search think-strategically-now there is a good ebook i recommend
I think people completely misrepresent schools... really? All they teach you in kindergarten is how to share? I'm sorry... come to the school where I work... these kids are being taught WAY more than that.
It's funny. I went to media school, and we had a lot of classes devoted solely to critical thinking. Now I go to law school and they tell us to never criticize or question the law (they literally said "you're going to be brainwashed by the end of your last year"). Maybe it depends on your job how much critical thinking you should use. Of course a judge can't critisize the law. that would be terrible
Humanism: about, or concerned with, the practice of human value and concerns. This includes, but is not limited to: human rights, reason, ethics, and justice.
How us Humanism bad but teaching small children that they are worthless little sinners not worthy of forgiveness better?
What alternative to Humanism do you suggest? Perhaps social contract theory should be replaced with Ancient Despotic Authoritarian Rule 101.
There is no proof for Humanism, it's a subjective philosophy.
Who said wheat grass isn't healthy for the human body? All he said is that it's nutrient poor. If you compare it to common vegetables it's about average but you need to drink it, which then reduces the value of the nutrients you're consuming. Not as much will be used making the actual nutrient value low.
Cattle (not cows) are not supposed to eat corn. They are grazing animals and corn makes them sick. They do eat "wheatgrass" if it's available. It's just the stalks and blades of wheat. They're not picky when it comes to the grassy comestibles. However, since most "wheatgrass" is being used to grow the grain and not the grassy portion, most cattle won't GET to eat it.
Cattle is (colloquially for cows) and yes they are fed corn depite it not being "good" for them. Pasture fed cows are more rare than corn fed in the USA.
@MsLadyCleopatra I actually know the beef industry inside and out. I was raised on a farm-fed beef farm.
Most cattle are grass fed for at least 2 years prior to being "fed out" at feed lots. It only takes a few weeks of a pure corn diet to fatten them up for butchering. However, it only takes about a week of a pure corn diet to make a cow sick.....so they pump them full of antibiotics and steroids to counteract the effect of their poor diet.
A Government of the Gaps argument is not completely workable because there are situations and scenarios where government Does solve problems. There's no such thing as a panacea, but a God of the Gaps argument is useless, because of the no God to fill in any Gaps. There's certainly a government to provide roads, fire dept and police.
Og God! People who love atheism love the sin! That is the whole story! Don't waste your "intelligence" any more. If God does not exist why are you so militant against Him? I wonder... Just a rhetorical question. why should I bother?
@aalexmary Here the Challenge, Learn the top 20 logical fallacies, Learn understand and know what confirmation bias is... ( Big One) Learn and study paradolia, understand basic brain function. Learn about the bicammeral mind and the evolution of consciousness.
Then unfortunately for you, you will be well equiped to see right through all religous fraud. Many of us don't believe in God, because honestly... we havn't seen a shred of evidence for one, and you won't even say what it is?
@MyITRcom What are you talking about, man? Human brain is designed to believe in a supreme being Remove God and replace Him with what? Whit emptiness? I am sick and tired of your brain washing. Don't worry, man. Communist atheist regime tried to brainwash the people but they did not succeed. Faith is those countries in stronger than ever. Many Jews and even nonbelievers converted to Christ in those dreadful atheist prisons and camp. The atheism in a low ceiling for human thinking
@aalexmary No brainwashing is required actually.. Only rational thinking. You might want to destroy your computer as it is a product of knowing our reality accurately, it is not a gift from god, but from men who use their minds and know how to think, not told what to think.
What makes you dangerous is you don't need evidence against others to deny them equality, you run people through your religious kangaroo kourt and find them guilty of "sin" without evidence, making you immoral.
@MyITRcom Why did they stop from their evolution? I don't believe unless I see. And based on your "I don't believe unless I see” you don't believe anything in history. Alex the Great, Ramses, Napoleon. Maybe they are all invented. You did not see your parent having sex, but you believe that you are their child. And if someone tells you a rude gossip, my friend, you believe it. And you did not see that event. You fail in your thinking. I don’t belong to your movement I am not brainwashes.
@aalexmary I believe because I understand something and can think and conceptually get a complex concept, that goes way beyond just looking at something. You say alot, but it really dosn't apply, probably just propaganda your Church told you to think one day... Have you ever had an original idea about anything? You have been infected by the God Virus unfortunately, but there is a cure... Knowledge, science, Reason, Critical thinking.
@MyITRcom Your words will perish like the smoke in the wind. Lord Jesus' words are eternal. People remember His words after 2000 years. Who will remember yours in a week? Oh, by the day I opened your comment a minute ago. I ignored it for 3 months and I already forgot his content. No substance in your message. Not at all.
@aalexmary Sorry, but your Jesus will find his rightful place along with Zues, and all the other past primitive Gods, the reason it his word has lasted 2000 years is because it is such a diabolical and deep mind insipid mind infection and has nothing to do with truth. Religion is nothing but a pack of lies designed to keep your mind enslaved by those who seek to control you and keep you a slave.
@aalexmary Sorry, but your Jesus will find his rightful place along with Zues, and all the other past primitive Gods, the reason it his word has lasted 2000 years is because it is such a diabolical and deep mind infection and has nothing to do with truth. @MyITRcom What is your story? The big bang? When? 15 billion years ago? Wow! How precise! Like a Swiss watch! Did you see the big bang! I know that you don't believe useless you see. So, all the Universe and all the diversity around us has a common tiny ancestor, like one tiny particle?Where did it came from? If you are derived from ape, I don't contradict you. Be my guest. As far as I am concerned Lord Jesus created me. It is a greater honour than being cousin with the "mother" of Tarzan.
@MyITRcom The reason of the atheism is that some people love sin. If you deny God that does not mean that He does not exist. It is your subjective truth Well, all the atheist political regimes collapsed in less than 100 years. Rather quickly for your truth. Atheism. No, thank you. I don't look down in the dust. I look up in the skies. God is the ultimate frontier for human thinking. The supreme ruler. Say hello to Stalin and Pol Pot. We will see how many victims they produced! Sayonara.
@MyITRcom Epic fail. Yes. In your narrow thinking. Yes. I agree with you. Maybe you are more related to the pigs. From biological point of view humans are more compatible with the pigs. There are liver and skin transplants from the animals. And yes, the bee and seal and the elephant have a a common ancestor. And they "leap" from species to species. I would be ashamed to declared such thing. Show me a monkey presenting signs for becoming a human.
@MyITRcom Dangerous? You judge people. Yes, your movement is dangerous. The atheist political regimes established prisons for army, intellectuals and clergy. What is your moral standard? You shall not kill! Do you believe in this? It is a divine law. By contradicting the divine law you establish anarchy. No, thank you. I don't want a remake of that "horror movie'
@aalexmary You philosophy is not only corrupt, but extremely dangerous, your morality is rooted in an undefined floating abstraction. Mine is rooted in the US. Constitution" with liberty and justice for all, that Man has a right to his life.
I am sure you would rather remake the Inquistion, crusades and witch trials? Or the current witch trials agaisnt gays, who just happen to be different.
Atheism is simply not a belief in God, it has no dogma or tenents.
@MyITRcom "Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always preserves."
-- 1 Corinthians 13:4-7. Thai is the essence of the faith in Christ.
(Saint Paul, the Apostle of Nations)
P.S. It is your choice. The emptiness of atheism or the love of God.
@aalexmary What would really be empty for me is knowing that I am living a lie and delusion created by bronze age men, while at the same time reaping the benefits of modern rational thought and science. For me to hold your views and be philosophical consistent would mean for me to not accept any products of science, no modern medicine or any other tangible values that came from overcoming the absurdity of religious lies. What would be empty is living in your delusionary world.
It would be very difficult to teach Critical thinking in school. Because you wouldn't be able to use the examples of religion without enough parents getting pissed and forcing your class to end.
wow, here's the irony in the video, these guys are always bad but here is a really smelly spot. These guys are insinuating that knowing the word CRANIUM means that they are adept thinkers. That just demostates how mentally defeicient they are. They pride themselves. These are shit tools. There is no crime in haveing them killed. They should all be killed.
That liberal there has no critical thinking skills. i didn't say, Don't listen to him because he's Irish. i said, this is the situation. Logic and Religion was taught for 100's of years, IT wasn't untill they REMOVED logic from the schools that the non critical thinkers came out of the woodwork with their illogical beliefs. I'm religious therofore disqualify my statements. I'm a troll, therefore disqualify my statements. That is what evil is, that is what hypocrisy is.
"The workers are using broken tools to do their work, if the tools were repaired they would accomplish 10 times the output whcih would replace the tools in just 1 of the 100 days they been assigned to their job.You are stupid for not repairing the tools."
You are a dogmatic retard because you disqualified my statement because i used the word Stupid in a proper instance yet you disregard it's usage, AND EVERYTHING ELSE I SAID. Should be killed for that.
critical thinking and the bible used to be taught to all students. what they did was remove both and sell communism, which is a corruption of logic and terms that have no basis in reality. It's like a magicians trick, you 're all too stupid to realize.
Critical thinking could be taught "with" everything else. It doesn't require a specific class, nor does it have to take away from other classes as all, because it can be taught simply by pushing people to think and giving them some of the tools in order to cultivate critical thinking within themselves.
I went to 7 schools. They all have limited funds to provide a limited lesson plan in the hope that you or I will fit into 1 of the area's they teach. However 90% of the time in the education system is spent doing lessons you don't want or don't need. It is a production line to find the brains that can make the most money and that is it.
My first course in formal logic was so straight forward and so helpful that I left class everyday with a deep conviction that the subject ought be taught in elementary schools. Teach children to make good judgments and everything else comes easier.
Once one know what the critical thinking process is and the elements, one then wonders what the heck they used to do before! Just make sure to tame your critical thinking skills around family and friends, one risks being labeled a pompous bastard.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
This is a false premise. True critical thinking cannot be taught. It's every bit a gift as someone who is gifted musically. You can aid in growth to those that have it. But, if the synapses aint connecting u ain't gonna teach it.
"True critical thinking cannot be taught. It's every bit a gift as someone who is gifted musically."
I don't believe that to be true at all - as so many skeptics have become so from a position of various kinds and degrees of woo-woo beliefs through having encountered skeptics and skeptical writings which teach the basics of critical thinking.
I don't think that teaching critical thinking instantaneously makes one reject claims of supernatural, but they are an essential tool that makes it...
...difficult for claims based on flimsy evidence or just anecdotes to achieve a prominent role in the worldview of the person.
There may be people who are "too far gone" in their support of some pseudoscientific claim or the other, too emotionally invested, to be wiling to apply critical thought to that subject, even if they are taught the skill, but most young people are not that entrenched, and learning the skills early may prevent them from becoming so.
Critical thinking is a set of skills that empower us to analyze the evidence and arrive at a logical conclusion. And skills can be learnt and honed. The difference is how good your critical thinking skills are compared to the guy next to you.
@nVei06 If you had critical thinking skills you would realize your erroneousness in engaging in an ad An Ad Hominem is a general category of fallacies in which a claim or argument is rejected on the basis of some irrelevant fact about the author of or the person presenting the claim or argument. FYI, my I.Q. is tested at about 150+ I am a very successful inventor, but none of that plays into why religion is more like a legal drug, then an accurate way to know reality.
@MyITRcom wow, wait, i do have critical thinking skills. probobly one of the top people on this comment board and probobly one of the most critical thinkers you've even seen. YOu're so lacking in critical thinking, you can not realize that when i call you stupid, i describing you. You're so dogmatic, you come out with Ad Hominon Attacks as reply and it's even hypocrisy. This is the type of shit tool we have to have killed.
@nVei06 I totally standfor the immediate death and removeable of MyITRcom. He should be killed. Find out where he is, keep him on a list. Guy like that needs to be killed. his 150 IQ, lol, So far we know he's an idiot. but if it's a 150, i bet it's 150 out og 300 which makes him very special. very very special. a soggy sack of beans.
@MyITRcom Let's add government, our society...and so on and so forth. You just end up completely pessimistic. I mean really---if a kid really sat there critically thinking Santa Claus----big business would go bankrupt. ^_^
@MedusaNegrita You end up pessimistic when you live in a world full of mystics, we should have hotels on the Moon and in space by now, flying cars, high speed transport throughout the entire US. What makes me pessimisitic is knowing full well that our Government has been bought out and paid for by large corporations and the people no longer have a voice at all. This is in large part because people are lazy minded and choose religion over thinking rationally.
Automatically assumed that teacher is a male. A non sexist would have asked or said "he or she".
A small scale thing really.
Till now, during my net anonymity, everyone has gotten my sex wrong but I don't mind. It's not like assuming someone's physical gender is other than they really are is not an insult. Unless you or the other person is a male/female chauvinist.
Don't know about statistics either. Out of math teachers it was about 50/50.
Not knowing a language does not make you a racist. Unless you refuse to learn it because you don't like Finns ;D
I don't know about that online people though, seems a little off the top. However the majority of my viewers (registered youtube users) seem to be male (61%). Age groups from 13-65, biggest demographic being between 30-50. And I'm most popular in USA.
I said nothing about not knowing a language = racism. :P
You said many people got your sex wrong when they had to base their guess on solely your (internet)name. Guessing some-ones race is just as hard (well harder).
If you look at a map of internet usage, you can clearly see the western world light up the most.
Most of the people in the western world are white. And men usually use the computer (and internet) more frequent and longer than women. At least... so far I know.
Statistics are usually portraying only a small part of a certain group so I don't rely too much on them. Neither do I make count on the people in my life. Not that statistics couldn't point some direction, depending on the source.
We live in different countries, which might account for some differences too...
At the Uni I attend, I haven't really count coz I don't care, but we have several lecturers and teachers for almost every course and there are plenty of both sexes.
Majority of new scholars were women though, outnumbering men quite noticeably.
True, if you use statistics correctly, they can paint a picture that is useful. And if not... then it's just decoration.
Yes you life in Finland (the one with the weird language amongst the Scandinavian, right? :P). I know, certainly, Sweden has a good system against sexism. The Netherlands isn't doing very bad, but there's always room for improvement.
I think more women graduate from the uni than men, but I'm not sure. :P
In Finland we have this retarded system that every employer needs to take a certain percentage of women. It sucks because instead of choosing the person because s/he qualifies the best, they choose them to fill the male/female ratio dictated by law. Women are still shunned in some respects a bit in working life though, but still it's not equal to give one group such an "advantage".
Yeah, discrimination (positive or negative) isn't they way to go. :S
But I do think it's a good idea to give man and woman an equal opportunity, in e.g. raising the kids. Give them just as much time off, not the mother more because she's a woman.
this was a very interesting talk. I am glad I subscribed to this channel. I am still in school and we are not really taught critical thinking, teachers will just say something is right and none of the students will question it because obviously the teacher knows what he/she is talking about and is right. they tell you to just accept what is given and often don't encourage real outside the square thinking. thanks for uploading this.
You really should question some things in school. I did and the reception varied but many teachers were supportive and liked to talk with me about biology, for example. I even pointed out mistakes from the books sometimes and criticized the history books for being a bit biased.
Some months ago a few friends of mine would drink it and when I asked them what benefits does it have? they would just say "I don't know but everyone else drinks it"......
I agree that the government of the gaps fallacy is surely worth mentioning. So is the worship of the voids enshrined in excessively laissez faire governance. "Pure" capitalism, democracy, and anarchism fail because thinking that the invisible hand of the markets, the voice of the masses, or the unfettered will of rugged individualists can solve ALL problems is asinine.
"Why People Believe Weird Things" is another example of propaganda. The author does not make any reasonable case, and the only connection between the issues discussed is that the author thinks they are strange. He does not even explain why.
Shermer's book asks the question, with specific examples:
Why do people believe A rather than B, when A is fantastic, magical, and highly improbable - and B is a hum-drum, everyday (and very likely) explanation of the same thing.
And goes on to ask, "Is this a good thing? What is skepticism and how is it useful?" etc.
So you obviously didn't read the book with your eyes open.
There's more reason to believe in Bigfoot than God, because the former does not violate any natural laws. Why is one more or less wierd?
Also, he attempts to draw parallels between paranormal events and things like Bigfoot and UFO. Unless he is speaking of belief in general, then he's basically including scientific research with things that are based on faith or second-hand accounts.
Too true... knowing facts and having critical thinking skills aren't related at all - except that it's best to acquire the former before applying the latter.
Superb points and I agree 100% that children should be taught about critical thinking and to question everything, especially one's own judgement.
However responsibility should always be maintained. Parents should always be consulted, otherwise you could break apart healthy relationships and even cause some members to fall into depression (I talk from my own perspective here).
That point alone is probably a show stopper, but with cooperation you could move closer to the end goal.
lol, penn and teller, did a potition on their show bullshit to have dihydrogen monoxyde banned, and they got a lot of people to sign with out thinking about it.
The best critical thinking/scientific mindset lesson I learned was in high school physics class when the teacher asked which should we trust more, the date that we produced from an experiment or the textbook if they conflict. (not that our physics text books are particularly unreliable in Finland :)
this reminds me of a hilarious answer someone gave to a question they were asked randomly on the street: what should people in glass houses not do? their answer: "walk around naked."
"Government of the gaps," interesting idea, as I think a lot of people tend to think that way. Which is no surprise given how government is portrayed in our government-run public schools.
"Politicians don't want people thinking for themselves, and they fund govt schools, and try to control them."
They only want good little drones who get their ideas from whatever the TV tells them and stay quiet while voting the party line. Whatever party that may be (Democrat, Republican, it doesn't really matter).
We had a history teacher my Senior year in High School that taught critical thinking. At the end of the year, he opened things up to questions about him, and one of the prep kids asked, "Are you a communist?"
"That 'certain political bent', that trusts a little too much in the government, is Liberalism.....Like religion, liberalism warps the mind."
I think classical liberals like Thomas Jefferson would disagree with that notion. But then again, 'liberalism' just doesn't mean what it used to mean (hence the term 'classical liberalism').
But at it's core, what the word is supposed to mean is the idea of personal liberty, which is far removed from the big government ideas of neo-liberals.
I was very lucky to get Philosophy at my school. I am so grateful for the critical thinking course which i apply to my life everyday! It really is something that needs to be emphasized in schools. Society needs it desperately.
This is a particularly good clip, but I like them all.

Now I go to law school and they tell us to never criticize or question the law (they literally said "you're going to be brainwashed by the end of your last year"). Maybe it depends on your job how much critical thinking you should use. Of course a judge can't critisize the law. that would be terrible

Dont people realize that the religion of humanism is being taught in schools?
Look at a text book sometime and there is nothing logical to support the information.
Things will change soon.
They should be teaching all options because there will never be solid physical proof of any side.
brandisify 1 year ago
@brandisify Pray tell, what is this "religion of humanism" you speak of?
And what "options" are you aiming for?
Do be specific. Vague desires and unformed wishes do not help.
ciaochowbella 1 year ago
@brandisify

Saying WHEATGRASS isn't healthy for the human body is like saying ALL GREEN plant foods aren't healthy for us.
Your WAY OFF THERE my friend!
Humans have been surviving off of plants forever and wheatgrass is a plant that just happens to more dense in nutrients than other plants.
Cows dont eat wheat grass you nut. Most of them are corn fed but the ones that are pasture fed are eating grass which isnt the same as wheatgrass.
MsLadyCleopatra 1 year ago
@MsLadyCleopatra
Who said wheat grass isn't healthy for the human body? All he said is that it's nutrient poor. If you compare it to common vegetables it's about average but you need to drink it, which then reduces the value of the nutrients you're consuming. Not as much will be used making the actual nutrient value low.
dookiecheez 1 year ago
@MsLadyCleopatra Just so ya know.......
Cattle (not cows) are not supposed to eat corn. They are grazing animals and corn makes them sick. They do eat "wheatgrass" if it's available. It's just the stalks and blades of wheat. They're not picky when it comes to the grassy comestibles. However, since most "wheatgrass" is being used to grow the grain and not the grassy portion, most cattle won't GET to eat it.
ciaochowbella 1 year ago
@ciaochowbella
Cattle is (colloquially for cows) and yes they are fed corn depite it not being "good" for them. Pasture fed cows are more rare than corn fed in the USA.
Thanks
MsLadyCleopatra 1 year ago
@MsLadyCleopatra I actually know the beef industry inside and out. I was raised on a farm-fed beef farm.
Most cattle are grass fed for at least 2 years prior to being "fed out" at feed lots. It only takes a few weeks of a pure corn diet to fatten them up for butchering. However, it only takes about a week of a pure corn diet to make a cow sick.....so they pump them full of antibiotics and steroids to counteract the effect of their poor diet.

Critical thinking could be taught "with" everything else. It doesn't require a specific class, nor does it have to take away from other classes as all, because it can be taught simply by pushing people to think and giving them some of the tools in order to cultivate critical thinking within themselves.

Stegocephalian 2 years ago 5
...difficult for claims based on flimsy evidence or just anecdotes to achieve a prominent role in the worldview of the person.
There may be people who are "too far gone" in their support of some pseudoscientific claim or the other, too emotionally invested, to be wiling to apply critical thought to that subject, even if they are taught the skill, but most young people are not that entrenched, and learning the skills early may prevent them from becoming so.
Stegocephalian 2 years ago
Critical thinking is a set of skills that empower us to analyze the evidence and arrive at a logical conclusion. And skills can be learnt and honed. The difference is how good your critical thinking skills are compared to the guy next to you.

A small scale thing really.

But it was the implicit thing in his mind that made him take it for granted.
I can't guess your 'race' either, by looking at your name. That doesn't make me a racist, I hope.
I don't see it as racism or sexism, maybe it's a faulty use of statistics? Aren't most teachers (certainly in chemistry) male?
Most people online are white males too, at least, I think.
daddyleon 2 years ago
I had one (out of 4) man as a chemistry teacher.
And I'm most popular in USA.
pienipaha 2 years ago
At my 'middle' school, there was only one teacher in chemistry, and that was a 'she'.
But at the other schools (at least most of them) males.
At 'higher' school (sorta like university), we had no women at all in that area. :P
That are my statistics. ;)
But humans aren't all that well at statistics, done in your mind.
daddyleon 2 years ago
I said nothing about not knowing a language = racism. :P
You said many people got your sex wrong when they had to base their guess on solely your (internet)name. Guessing some-ones race is just as hard (well harder).
If you look at a map of internet usage, you can clearly see the western world light up the most.
Most of the people in the western world are white. And men usually use the computer (and internet) more frequent and longer than women. At least... so far I know.
daddyleon 2 years ago
"I said nothing about not knowing a language = racism. :P"
Neither did I. It was meant as a lame joke.
And I don't think most of them based it on my name either, you can't tell one way or another really from that even if you understood what it means ;D

Some perhaps fell for the stereotypical view after reading my channel info (changed now coz my channel was hacked twice)

pienipaha 2 years ago
Statistics are usually portraying only a small part of a certain group so I don't rely too much on them. Neither do I make count on the people in my life. Not that statistics couldn't point some direction, depending on the source.
We live in different countries, which might account for some differences too...

daddyleon 2 years ago
I know there are still more men teaching, but at the 1st school you go to, age 4 to 12 (roughly), the most are women.
But yeah, different countries different things happening. xD
daddyleon 2 years ago
In Finland we have this retarded system that every employer needs to take a certain percentage of women. It sucks because instead of choosing the person because s/he qualifies the best, they choose them to fill the male/female ratio dictated by law. Women are still shunned in some respects a bit in working life though, but still it's not equal to give one group such an "advantage".
pienipaha 2 years ago
Yeah, discrimination (positive or negative) isn't they way to go. :S
But I do think it's a good idea to give man and woman an equal opportunity, in e.g. raising the kids. Give them just as much time off, not the mother more because she's a woman.
Anyway, I think we agree. :P

He does not even explain why.

poorkinghaggard:
Shermer's book asks the question, with specific examples:
Why do people believe A rather than B, when A is fantastic, magical, and highly improbable - and B is a hum-drum, everyday (and very likely) explanation of the same thing.
And goes on to ask, "Is this a good thing? What is skepticism and how is it useful?" etc.
So you obviously didn't read the book with your eyes open.

I think he made an over simplification.

I wholeheartedly agree that sound critical thinking and common sense need to become a bigger part of learning in schools.
And I say that as a practicing Muslim.

Not knowing the word "cranium" isn't a sign of being dumb. Maybe those people are not very educated, that's all. Not the same as unintelligent.
Laughing about people like that is really dumb, though.

Too true... knowing facts and having critical thinking skills aren't related at all - except that it's best to acquire the former before applying the latter.

In Sweden, we are taught to use critical thinking in all situations. Atleast in my school.

The government schools do not teach critical thinking for a few reasons:
1) They suck, because they are a semi-monopoly and don't have to do a good job.
2) They are dominated by collectivists and thinking for yourself tends to make people pursue their own ends instead of collective ones.
3) Politicians don't want people thinking for themselves, and they fund govt schools, and try to control them.
4) Bad teachers don't like being questioned.
By the way, I'm a HS math teacher.

"Politicians don't want people thinking for themselves, and they fund govt schools, and try to control them."
They only want good little drones who get their ideas from whatever the TV tells them and stay quiet while voting the party line. Whatever party that may be (Democrat, Republican, it doesn't really matter).

When it comes to the grass drink there talking about in the video, an old saying comes to mind. "A fool and his/hur money are quickly parted."

We had a history teacher my Senior year in High School that taught critical thinking. At the end of the year, he opened things up to questions about him, and one of the prep kids asked, "Are you a communist?"

it's wierd/sad/interesting that critical thinking is the kind of thing that needs to be taught.

That "certain political bent", that trusts a little too much in the government, is Liberalism.....Like religion, liberalism warps the mind.

Wikipedia "Liberalism" sometime. I do not think that word means what you think it means.
