  • fun video. I'm not even fixing a hdd but i enjoyed it lol

  • Hi, I've been getting ready to try this for soooo long, but when I spun up the drive after removing the card my computer just shut off. Do you think the surge is knocking out the power supply or is it probably a short in the drive? :(

  • You have an excellent taste in music.

  • this is why seagate harddrives are considered crap are cause of problems they have always had

  • Thank you for this. I was able to fix my Seagate 1 TB Barracuda drive with this. I ordered a CA-42 cable online and mine had 6 wires.

    Here's the 6 wire CA-42 cable:

    RX-Green

    TX-White

    GND-Orange

  • Thanks a million, I just send you 5 bucks for some coffee! Your Great!

  • @mikevanstaveren Thank you kindly :) The coffee was excellent! Cheers.

  • THANK YOU, THANK YOU THANK YOU !!!!!

I have a Maxtor DiamondMax 22, STM3500320AS, and it had bricked 18 months ago. I tried several times but no success. Finally i got it to work. Difference is that i placed a card under SATA power contacts (advice from another tutorial). Also i had to restart HyperTerminal after SATA power unplug / 10s wait / plugin part. After that it worked just like on video. I have copied the entire disk, and now i have all my files back.

    Thank you again,

    many kisses

    Neb

  • Hi Nitrohelix1 i am following the procedure that you have illustrated in your video and i have no problem till i remove the paper and mount the PCB. after that when i type U the hard drive starts emitting a clicking sound but nevertheless the spin up is complete. However, when i type N1 the clicking sound will happen and this message appears: (unable to load diag overlay) and i cannot continue.

do i have to replace the ROM in my new PCB with the old one? any suggestions are much appreciated

  • it worked for awhile ~ after that bios doesnt seems to detect my hdd again.

i only managed to copy/ backup 50% of my things..

    can anyone help ?

i tried to fix it by going thru all the step again. But at the last step where i key in m0,2,2,0,0,0,0,22 (hyperterminal)

no results were shown even after 30 min.

  • Hi there!

My segate freeagent go 1tb Is not recognized on any computer, I can heard it runs and it appear on the screen but I cannot access to it. There appear a message that says something about an error I/O. Can you help me please? I need my files back I'm scared :(

  • is a beeping sound on seagate drive a bsy error? and is there no way for me to use hyperterminal in windows 7, i saw a website where they have it now 30 days free trial . do you know if its same as XP.. thanks in advance

  • What a nice show. Good work!

  • it worked :D i´m so happy!!!!! yeaaaaaaaaah thanks alot, great work!!!!!!!!!!

i wait so long for a tutorial like this and after 2 years i fix my disk!

    thanks man

  • On Second Thought Someone Leaked samsung 175Terrabyte of Storage space on a website & Article has some evidence with E-Vault I-365 Goodbye screen!

  • Seagate Takes Three Years To Realize It's Using The Wrong Branding! According to Techreportpowerup! Maybe they mean the wong branding & and using Samsung Alliance! Means Seagate out of Tech!

  • thanks, great work

  • OMG IT WORKED. I carnt tell you how happy i was to get all my stuff back.

I kept getting LED:000000CC FAddr:0025bf67 msg. It was due to me not using captial Z.

use must use caps hyper terminal in order for this to work.

    THANK YOU <3

  • the driver doesnt work on my win7, any other help?

  • @aznlilboiz the drivers are too old for win7. Best to find a pc with winXP on it.

  • Thank you so much, this was very easy with this tutorial ! my hd is working again!

  • @bm300 Congrats!

  • I made your way, but now I can only install windows on the disk. Why can not install other OS, like an ubuntu ?

    Thank you for answer

  • @nitrohelix1

Hi, I'm experiencing an issue with my Seagate (1TB 7200.11 ST31000333AS),

it's undetected by BIOS and makes weird sounds (spin-up, then clicks, then spin down), over and over again. Sounds exactly like in this vid :

    /watch?v=3zUmdd4PewA

Do you think it's related to the BSY error? Have any idea what I should do?

    Thanks!

  • @aryerosenberg It sounds like a hardware issue, whereas BSY is a firmware problem. Might have to get the drive fixed professionally.

  • sukses

  • Btw I used the female pins from an old dell Dimension that go onto its Mobo PWR, RST, etc Pins. I popped 3 of them out of the housing and i spliced each cable onto the 3 jumper pins individually. I WAS SCARED ABOUT THE METAL TOUCHING each other so i wrapped each in tape just thin enough to get each onto the Seagate Drive jumper pins without being too tight. In the end it worked!! Thanks . If anyone wants my CA-42 cable send me a message on my page.

  • I attempted to install the CA-42 Drivers on Windows 7 x64. Unrecognized! Instead used a Friend's Windows XP. I installed the drivers for the cable first. REBOOTED. The Cable was recognized in Device manager under 'PORTS...' and used 'COM3'. When I plugged in the HDD i heard the chime. But it didnt show in Device Manager. I Tried COM1 in HyperTerminal. press Cntrl+Z. No response. Tried COM3, And the device began responding. I proceeded as the Tutorial and ALL is WELL!!!!!! THANKS SO MUCH!!!!

  • Okay I ordered this NOKIA data cable ... It had no text inside it!... the thing is I cannot type anything in my hyper terminal! :S + I cannot install the software.. How do you install it??? I have Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit.

  • @NasserHamedi the drivers are for windows XP because its a pretty old cable. it isn't compatible for win 7.

  • @nitrohelix1 Ok another thing is that my cable doesn't recognize my device... I have tried to change the place of the cables but yeah .. I cannot even install it.

  • @NasserHamedi Are you using a winXP pc?

  • @nitrohelix1 Yes WIN XP .. I cannot install the driver on the CD... It says that device couldn't be found..

  • @NasserHamedi I have provided links to drivers in the video's "more info" section. Try those. You will need to extract them to a folder on your desktop and then when you plug in the cable and it asks for the drivers, browse to that folder and it should install.

  • @nitrohelix1 maybe you can make a step by step vid of what you did so he can see if you made mistakes??

  • Does this work with Seagate Internal Hard drive Barracuda Green 2TB (Cache 64 MB / 5900RPM / Sata 6Gb/s) ST2000DL003???

I cannot find mine in BIOS, DISK MANAGEMENT, MY COMPUTER or anywhere else. It has POWER and starts to spin so it cannot be DEAD?... I have all data in it please help!

  • Sadly when mine broke I took it into the back garden and smashed it with a hammer. I then proceeded to put it in the bin. I know for next time, lol.

  • do i have to put that jumper back (2:47)?

  • @ktzdanigga some older motherboards won't recognize a 1tb hard drive without the jumper. If you put yours back and it doesnt read it then yes, put the jumper back on.

  • Is it normal the drive keeps spinning once every second for multiple minutes? LIke spin-stop-spin-stop-spin-stop for multi minutes?

  • @wimnaessens is this when you first plug it in or when you type the spin down command? It's supposed to not do anything when you spin it down (Z)

  • I needed this I thought I was going to lose all my porn thanks man

  • 1:53 "CRAP!" 2:02 "Son of a..." XD

  • Thanks for creating this vid.. lol Loved that classic video game feel to it and I was dying without my desktop lately since my seagate pooped out.

  • Thank you so much you saved 1500 miles of driving and taking pictures again for us. :)

  • i love the zelda music

  • What I think I love most about this is the Hyrule music done to sound like some sort of classical. How lovely... :)

  • Awesome awesome awesome. I think i ran into every possible hitch along the way but i got it working. If you are on Windows 7 x64, set up a Win XP virtual machine with VMWare or similar. Solves hunting down x64 drivers and finding an alternative for hyper terminal. If you are running a virtual XP and you are getting an error that VMWare can not connect USB devices through the host, uninstall your usb devices and let windows add default ones. you may need to also uninstall sony usb drivers

  • Thanks for the tutorial. I'm doing this right now and have been trying to get the ctrl+z to work with no luck in the past hour. Someone here commented it took him 4 hours to get it to work so I guess I shouldn't give up yet. I've done the switching of RX and TX many times and am sure the pins are making good contact. I'll keep trying. :(

  • nice fix

  • Will there be any other way?. I tried changing the sata port, most often able to recover the partitions and now update the firmware of my ST3500410AS 500.1 GB, I change the order of the power cords trying to be direct connection seems to be working well so far. Will continue to test.

  • Thanks for this vid, this helped me a lot with my scenario , the most useful Youtube vid ever. This evening one of my other hard drives started giving the same issue, so back to your vid . Thanks!

  • Just repaired my friends segate SD15 by your method!

    works like charm!

Had a problem with typing I was typing "." (coma) instead "," (period)

    Thanks again for your tutorial!

  • Just wanted to take a moment to say thanks again for the work you did on my drive this past week. I got it back today and all my files were available. You saved me days if not weeks of recreating stuff that I had done/changed since my last backup. You have no idea how much I appreciate it.

  • ok where can I send mine to get it fixed? I was going to try this but I don't trust my McGuyver skills.

  • @trencher7 I'll send you info in your inbox :)

  • So it seems that I found a possible way out of my misery. I'm going to try that, and hope that it'll work.

Seriously? I say fuck Seagate. I'll never buy anything from them again.

  • mine decided to break just a week ago (Had it since 2009). After watching this over and over again, finally got the courage to repair it myself. And thanks for the video seriously, I managed to fix this. Took one try (a few tries trying to get Ctrl Z working). Have updated to firmware and all. Hopefully it's all good now :D :D.

  • Well, it took some doing and some shoddy workmanship but this worked for me! Ran into a couple of issues:

    -Needed a driver for CA-42 cable for Win7 x64

--go to cooldrives . com; there you'll find the vista and win7 x64 driver. only vista driver worked for some reason (wividrforprc.html)

-During the process when I tried the spin up "U" after removing the business card, I got an error. You have to ensure you tighten ALL screws!

Now have Mirrored backups in place. THANKS!

  • @rlong007 I think that middle screw (next to the little peg) makes all the difference. Think thats why some pp are having a tough time. Thanks for the tip!

  • thank you very very much!!!

My old HDD is now working, and ive got my pics for 10 years now again :D

    godd bless ya!!!

  • Thank you ever so much for this encouraging tutorial, thanks to you I could recover all data from my ST3500320AS with BSY error, with a CA-42 made in Thailand.

Cable colors: Red, Yellow, Blue, Black, White.

    - Connect Red + / Yellow - to a 3.3V battery

    - Black = GND

    - White = TX

    - Blue = RX

I got a few freezing problems while removing the card from the PCB, but at the 4th try it worked flawlessly. Good luck to everyone!

  • Nitro you are a legend. Just a quick reminder to you all. Make sure you update your firmware straight after, if it happened once it could happen again. Get them from the seagate website.

Once again Nitro you have saved 100s of hours of work and game time :)

  • this is sending me crazy!

i am onto my 2nd ca-42 cable. this one is exactly the same as one i have known to work for other people. chinese cable with the blue, green and white wires.

i install the driver no problems, connect to hyperterminal and try the ctrl z and get no response. have fiddled with all the connections, swapped the tx rx but still the same.

i have successfully done a loopback test ( connect the gnd and join together the tx and rx, open hyperterminal and i can see what i type)

  • @78shaney Sorry to hear about the trouble! Make sure the drive is on and you hear it wind down before going into hyperterminal; Check your pins to see if they are making GOOD contact with the drive's pins and that the wires are not accidentally touching other wires. Those are some things that I run into when I do it. Hopefully it helps you.

  • @78shaney I used toothpicks to hold the pins in place and the separate the pins from making contact. I also had the same problem not getting the prompt. the first time I hit Ctrl + Z, I just kept getting these arrows being printed on my screen. I saved the hyperterminal profile, exited hyperterminal. restarted hyperterminal, opened the profile, and then out of superstition I hit Ctrl + Z with the left Ctrl key this time and I got the prompt. None of this made sense but I just thought I'd share.

  • Would love something similar for Western Digital harddrives, or would this work there aswell? Would any USB cable do or does it have to be a CA-42 cable?

    Regards

  • @razxorx Only CA-42 and it seems the problem is limited to just Seagate drives

  • 2 hiccups that I ran into. First one is that in my Windows XP, the Device Manager did not have a Modem category. The device was listed under Ports (COM & LPT), and it told me what COM port the USB modem was using. The second hiccup was that when I did "U" to spin up the drive, it failed after about 30 seconds. I read that it is because I forgot to tighten the screws after taking the paper out. I tightened the screws did "U" again and it worked.

  • @Lucidmike78 Yes, the only reason it detected as Modem for me is that i had a similar driver that (somehow) worked for this cable. I believe it was a motorola driver I had installed for a previous program.

  • I managed to do this with a x64 machine running a x86 virtual machine through vmware. I just wanted to report that because of this youtube video, i got my drive back with a lifetime worth of pictures. All for $10. The beauty of this video is that it makes it look simple and simplifies a lot of steps. I believe I did run into Gradius' page before, but it looked too complicated. Thank you for spending the time to make this video. The Link music is very fitting because you are a hero to many.

  • @Lucidmike78 Thanks for the kind words! I'm glad it worked out for you and for others as well :)

  • Sorry thanks to Cod7th for providing the correct order of cables :)

  • Scrap those last 2 comments! I am now up and running :). I now have 100s of hours of game play back again!! A big thankyou to the fine young lady who posted this vid and a big thankyou to Bigboylies for confirming my cable order as he must have had the same 42 cable as me. A message to all: keep on trying read all the posts for clues and dont give up. Oh and screw u seagate ;) hehe

  • hi. please help. my cable from china has red, white, black and green cables inside. i dont know which go where. im using an xp laptop and have installed the drivers when prompted. please help

  • Hi. Im having real trouble getting hyperterminal to recognize my drive. I have a cable from china but it has black red white and green in it. I'm using an old xp laptop to do it. Will USB 1.1 make a difference? Please please help me

  • Hi everyone! this video is great and i managed to save my data :).. I would like to know if there is a way to put HDD to the state before its fixed, and how?? Thnx..

  • Don't rush to buy a MiniTorx! A .050 allen wrench is a perfect fit if you have a allen wrench set. Fits like a glove. You might save yourself $10 and a week of waiting. For people with x64 systems, from my experience, a x86 guest VM on a vmware workstation running on a x64 host has never failed to get the x86 only device to work through the V M. You will have to flash through the VM. I have not tried this yet, but my CA-42 cable should be arriving in about a week. I'll let you know if it works!

  • even my segate hard disk 1TB external i not getting detected....the company say that will be not able to get my data back/.. :'( ....i hate segate for this...

  • Are you still actively providing services to fix these drives? Would I be able to send you my drive? Approximately how many drives have you un-bricked already?

  • I was wondering, about powering the drive. Does it matter if the SATA interface is hooked up as well. I have an SATA USB cable thing, and its single plug will connect to both the power slot and the interface slot. Is this dangerous while trying to restore the firmware?

  • Esto lo puede hacer alguien que no tenga temor de perder sus datos. En mi caso, envie el disco a un laboratorio español de nombre OnRetrieval. Recuperaron todo por 350 € y tengo mi info. nuevamente.

  • are there any drivers for a 64 bit windows 7? the data cd that came with my cable from china turned out to be either blank or unreadable to my computer. Leaving negative feedback on ebay.....

  • CONFIRMED - Working 100%

  • This may be a stupid question, but my Seagate ST31000340AS is bricked. (It spins up, sounds fine, but won't be recognized by any bios). Will this little operation that you perform fix a bricked HDD?

I look forward to trying this if it is able to fix a bricked drive.

    Cheers'

  • thank you good sir, i now have all of my data back

  • So under your brief tutorial you mention your CA-42 drivers will only work on 32 bit systems.... I have a 64 bit system. Which drivers should I use? Your help would be much appreciated and the tutorial you offer is excellent!

  • @TheUbermensch Hi! I think because the cable is old, it will not work on a 64-bit system, see if you can find a 32bit pc to try out this fix. Good luck, I hope it works out for you!

  • Mad skills. I salute you sir.

  • Does this recovery technique change anything on the drive to prevent future problems of it messing up again? and is the driver you provided a link to cable specific or could it possibly work with other cables? Also I am assuming this works for the 500 GB seagate hard drive, I was reading on a forum that the hard drive I have can get BYS error. Also this fixes the hard drive so it can be places back in the case correct? I don't want to have a weird external external hook up like that be permanent

  • @00zian00 Backup anything important and update firmware to prevent future lockup. Driver works with only Ca-42 Nokia cable. Works with 500gb and yes you can put it back in the enclosure.

  • fixed my hard drive using your tutorial!

thanks so much for taking the time to make this. saved hours worth of important audio projects.

  • I have connected it all up, drivers installed and hyperterminal can see the port, but the control Z command does nothing, it seems completely unresponsive

does anyone know how to solve this?

  • So where exactly are you supposed to shim if you have the rectangular type PCB? The very site you're referencing shims the motor drive connection rather than the one you're shimming...I'm confused.

Also, how do I know if my problem is firmware issues?

  • You did not need to use a battery for the CA42 Cable? Other video's say I have to use to 1,5volt batteries, or is power just being drawn from the usb bus on your computer/laptop? thanks! :)

  • @mikevanstaveren no battery is needed for the CA-42. They were probably using it to power the hard drive?

  • [stands and applauds]

  • Yeah I was like double WTF?! because my computer didn't boot up.

  • Simple the best. Very tks

  • Sir, please email me @ jdayao@europacific.ph for fast conversation.. thank you

  • nitrohelix1 saved my life - well - at least all my data and the hard drive. Be good to yourself Seagate sufferers, and let nitrohelix1 fix the hard drive. She has the knowledge, the tools, the software and my thanks. Thanks V.

    Franko

  • Is there an easy way to identify the proper CA-42 cable to purchase? I purchased one (from a US seller, maybe the mistake?) and it is impossible to remove the casing from the USB end without likely damaging the cable. Is it a simple "order from seller in China/Hong Kong" deal, or something else to make it easy to identify? Thanks!

  • @endcontra You don't have to order from China to get the cable. Did you ask the seller beforehand where the cable was made?

  • @nitrohelix1 Didnt catch that part before I bought one, but have sense asked a handful of them and gotten little response. Is it simply "made in China" = win?

  • I can't seem to get mine to work. I can't get windows to use the drivers you provided.

Using the nokia drivers, when I start the power to the HDD I just get "RxT 0x10M" in hyper terminal. And can't really do anything else. I've tried switching them, but don't get anything.

  • What operating system are you using? XP, 7?

  • @nitrohelix1 xp

  • I get to the step where I power off for 10 secs then power back on but hypertermal does not respond even when I press Ctrl+z I can;t ad the m0..... etc command after that. Any ideas?

  • Moreover, has the hdd to be connected to sata power cable? If I connect it before pressing CTRL+Z i don't get any symbol, the cursor stands still.

  • @nitrohelix1 I can't manage to access to the hard disk in any way, I bought an USB to TTL adapter on eBay but after I plug the pins and start HyperTerminal I got a big stressed O trying to press CTRL+Z and after trying again I get the right arrows. I even tried to tighten the pins without success.

  • can this be done making an USB cable from a USB male connector and wires? or it has to be that especific nokia cable with that little board? please help me with that doubt.

  • @Phan77om I'd say it's easier just to buy the cable because all other cables don't seem to work and they all have RX/TX wires. It's just that this particular cable works successfully with this fix.

  • @nitrohelix1 plus you would need drivers and some really good programming skills but hey, if you are able to make one that's more power to you :D

  • 3. If you connected & the hyperterminal spurts out strange characters eventho you didnt touch the keyboard, chances are your cable is in the right order, but it is abit loose/ TX RX cable are touching each other

tips : try and try again...dont give up easily, ive done mine for almost 4 hours before finally connected thru hyperterminal.

good luck to people who are trying!!

  • @BigBoyLies Thats a great tip, I always tell people who msg me to keep trying, its not as easy as it seems, but its very well worth it in the end. Congrats!

  • 1st off...thanx for the video tutorial...it works for my ST3500320AS SD15

im using windows 7 home premium, took the hyperterminal from windows xp, n using ca-42 cable made in thailand (abit different from the video.i used black = GND, white =TX, blue = RX , red as +3V and yellow as -3V)

here's what i experienced during my 'reviving' process

    1. windows 7 already has the driver needed for the connector

    2. If you got arrow instead of F3 when u press ctrl z, swap the position of TX and RX

  • @BigBoyLies when you read pinouts on cables to there respective connections, you always switch them.

cable rx is receiving data, peripheral tx is transmitting data and vice versa.

  • Thank you very much for the Video! You've saved my photos and work docs! :-)

Next time, when I'm in Korat (Seagate factory Thailand) I will fart on the nose of the Seagate managers.

Thanks for your tutorial Video :-) 100% works again! :-D

  • will this fix work for BSY errors of seagate barracuda 7200.12 line of hard disks???

  • what are the symptoms of a LBA0 error?

  • @mtktm It will show as LBA = 0 when you enter the BIOS hardware screen

  • My other suggestion for connecting to the drives pins is using the wires found in any old tower to connect the power switch, leds, reset button, pc speaker, etc to avoid having to use tape or paper to prevent the pins from touching eachother when you insert them onto the jumper pins on the drive.

  • I fixed my ST310000340AS drive with all the info found on youtube on and googling. In my case I used an old CDROM audio cable for the pins and a programming cable for a two-way radio (USB>Serial>TTL) and it worked great. Had to use Ubuntu and GTKTerm because none of my windows machines wanted to work with the programming cable (Prolific PL-2303 chipset). I also just loosened the pc board enough to slide a piece of paper to prevent motor leads to touch pcb where 3 pin connector to motor drive was

  • Will a Nokia CA-53 cable work?

  • @No1l3ft2C i tried with my ca-53, & failed.seems you need ca-42 to do the job, since ca53 doesnt hav the 'communicating board'

  • Nice

  • I did this 15 minutes ago... My disk and all of my data stored on it are saved...

I'm puking rainbows and craping coloured stars!!! You, sir, are my hero!!!

My nerd happiness is over 9000!!!!

  • @Zitzaki Thanks and congrats, I'm a girl but thank you all the same lol

  • You my friend have enabled me to rescue a whole year's worth of experimental data for the University where I work. I have no idea why they didn't back it up somewhere, but for their sake I can't thank you enough ;-)

  • @davemckiernan Congrats! I'm happy to hear the great news, my hard drive had several years worth of music and films I edited so I know how relieving it feels. I appreciate the thanks :D of course there's a donate button ;) goes towards the fees for getting my A+ certification so I can do this for a living lol

  • 3 minutes ago I came back to live 480Gb of very precious info for me thanks to this post. Thank you very much.

  • what about a 7200.11 firmware HP24 st3500620AS the instructions should be similar if not the same right?

  • When do you take out the card?

  • @smoth7 @ 0:49?

  • Hello Nitrohelix1 ,

    after i tried :

    F3 1>N1

I got allways the same words:

    LED:000000CC FAddr:00243FCF

Is there any hope for me and my seagate-hdd

  • Hello nitrohelix1 and other (maybe TheGiorgigno79),

    When I type "N1":

    i allways get "LED:000000CC FAddr:00243FCF LED:000000CC FAddr:00243FCF

Can someone help me?? Many Thanks

    Jamesblond70

  • U've got my big thanks, man. My 1TB was dusting deep inside my closet when i found this, just did this and... it WORKED. Saved thousands of priceless photos of my cats, my travels... speechless. Thx.

  • @Tasior27pl lol cat pics are def. priceless :) glad to hear, congrats!

  • @Tasior27pl stupid asshole! she is a girl not man!

  • First of all, thanks!!! solved mine ST3500320AS SD15, fantastic tutorial, easy to understand.

Btw, for ppl out there to refer also, here is my list of hard n soft when i did this :

    Win 7 Ultimate

Hyper Terminal (extracted from Win XP)

    That f**cked up ST3500320AS HDD

Nokia CA-42 (Made in China) its kinda different from the tutotiral - Green (plug to RX on HDD), White (TX on HDD), Black (Ground on HDD), Red (Not Needed)

Prolific USB-Serial Driver (For Nokia CA-42 USB)

    Tools (Screwdriver T6, etc)

  • Anyone know if this will work on a Maxtor DiamondMax 22 500Gb (STM3500320AS) - Firmaware MX15???

  • detected by bios they will not flash new firmware and you have to pay for data recovery total BS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • had the 750gb model woke up one morning powered on pc harddrive was not seen returned drive to seagate drive arrive at seagate Feb 22 got email saying was shipped on 26 Feb drive never shipped contacted seagate was told drive had shipped when they said looked at tracking info and ups said drive shipped on March 03 received drive on March 05 no data was recovered rma drive was a blank drive seagate says that they donot offer free data recovery only firmware flash but if you drive is not det

  • when you plug in the nokia cable to the hdd

wut else do you plug in, both sata adapters or just the usb cable

cuz i want to run this as an external hard drive so i need to know wut gets plugged in

  • i have questions

    1. Where do i leave the hard drive after plugging it in with the cable? outside?

    2. Can i use one of those hard drive docks (like the one u have) to power (or else how do u power it)?

  • Data loss makes me sad...

    :'(

  • Can I use my SATA to USB adaptor that I already have that is used to hook internal hard drives up to USB or do I need this Nokia cable

  • Could I just use the SATA to USB device I have from Apricorn... It's the kind that allows you to hook up a SATA or IDE hard drive up to your computer and use it as an external or do I have to go through all the hassle with the Nokia cable and running wires all over the place

  • Please! I must have that Zelda track! I've searched high and low but haven't found that beautiful strings only version! I looked at the info you posted to no result and checked all the zelda music sites... I've never heard that one until now!

ps. Thank you for the tutorial (although recovery of my HDD is now of secondary importance to the music!)

  • @kip0r I've updated the link to a direct download :D You're welcome. Enjoy!

  • @nitrohelix1 Amazing! Thank you so much! :D

  • HI!! I followed every step until "N1"... I got this error: "Init SMART Fail"... endlessly.

    Do you have any idea???

  • @kingvienna I'm not an expert on HDs but so far the forums are saying something wrong with the heads on the platter in which case this method cannot be used. Sorry about that! ):

  • I purchased the CA-42 cable but I am having trouble installing the drivers. In device manager it sits under Unknown Device under the Usb section and when I go into the device to update the device it does not recognize it. Please help :

  • @lovenamese What OS are you using? It will not work on Win 7 only XP.

  • @nitrohelix1

Hi I have a XP machine. But I got it to work! When I plugged in the connectors they were touching and shorting and windows kept saying it was an unknown device. I used some black electrical tape on the connectors and windows asked for drivers after i plugged in the usb device. Thanks for your help!!!

  • @nitrohelix1 How about on virtual Win XP in Win 7?

  • The path to hell is paved with seagate hard drives...

  • bossing, where could i find this "RS232 Female Crimp pins" I've been looking in every mall, at ace hardware but still no luck in finding such, i'm from manila by the way, and i need to fix my seagate badly since my all company projects are in there.

    Please help'

  • @kordapiosabaytonjr usually you can find them at computer part stores not really in hardware or electronic stores. Online on eBay is also a good way to find them

  • Yes I got the nor mal prompt when hitting Ctrl-Z and /2 but when I hit "Z" I got errors and no spin down. I later opened the drive and the platters seem stuck and will not turn at all. They use to turn when I used spinrite software, but for some reason it doesn't spin anymore. Any suggestions?

  • @me20003 Opening it up is not a very good idea since you don't have what they call a "clean room" I think it's a professionals problem now if you can't get it unstuck,
