@aaddri Listening to this recording of D Fischer-Dieskau I "hear" Bryn Terfel! Bryn must have been listening a lot to Dietrich during his studying years.
The chorus reaches a climax with this: ...Dem Herren, dem mein Lied ertönt "the Lord to Whom my song goes up!" The salvation of pardon is granted the penitent, in days to come he will walk in the peace of the blessed! Vor Höll' und Tod ist ihm nicht bang; drum preis ich Gott mein Lebenlang. "Hell and death do not appal him, therefore will I praise God my life long. Hallelujah in Eternity."
Not having found Tannhäuser among the pilgrims, Elisabeth says:
Er kehret nicht zurück.
"He is not coming back."
But, of course, he does and tells Wolfram in the Rome Narrative (Romerzählung) what happened. The Pope told him he was eternally damned (for spending time in the Venusberg = mons Veneris!) and that just as the staff in the Pope's hand would never bloom again, so he would never find salvation from hellfire.
You will have to look up the Young Pilgrims' Chorus to learn the end.
I believe that although this is a very moving piece that I'll post a video response with much less gravitas : ) for the enjoyment of general audiences : )
uhhhhh is this in German and is there a translated version lol but otherwise this is verygood and my band is joining with our school chorus to preform it but our director only chose the like the top 5 ppl to play and since im second french horn out of two I'm still very good =]
Hahhh I was probably having a few drinks when I wrote that, LOL. I think I missread your comment and got all tense. I hardly remember writing it. Have fun in your chorus, nice that you guys are having an opportunity to perform it.
I can't find any adequate words--this is one of the most beautiful choruses I have ever heard--the kind that leaves me speechless and so very happy and grateful to be alive!
Halleluja in Ewigkeit
I saw the LA opera production of this, very XXX for the old ladies in the row in front of me, lol. I got a nice view of the naked dancers from the 3rd row. Anyway, they did a nice job with it. Wagner rocks and I LOVE this chorus and how the motif goes on and on and on throughout the opera.
restores and elevates my mind, my soul, my faith, my hope, my focus to a brighter plane of gratitude, solace, and courage each time i hear it--even though i don't understand the language. thank you, Eurekaaaaa, Wagner, the musicians, and the voices for this gift you bestowed to transform lives and hearts...

oh, and the starlight choral from the album or cassette of the same name, which i own.most are from operas such as verdi's 'humming chorus from madame butterfly, soldiers chorus from 'Faust'[actIV]Wedding march from 'Lohengrin'(act111),and of course "anvil chorus act 111.and thats just side 2.and this, March and chorus from "Tannauser" (act111.and anvil chorus from "il Trovatore".excelent listening.thanks
My father had a record, years ago with a lot of wagner conducting the hollywood bowl choral, with this on it as well as a few from the operas, relesed on AXIS records by your one and all time fave roger wagner conducting the hollywood bowl symphony orchestra back in '56,cassette TC-AX-1125.if you care to find it youself but i doubt it.
Halleluja in Ewigkeit! Halleluja in Ewigkeit!
Wonderful! Wagner's choral writing is out of this world (it's what we miss in The Ring!) Beaten, for me, only by the entry of the Grail Knights in Parsifal - which is absolutely peak Wager!
The search for a better self, for a genuine balance with life, doesn't matter wich is your god, or if you have any god at all, just simply believe that mankind can reach greater meaning for its own existance, that was Wagners point! There is no greater genious, this guy was musicians DaVinci, more complete and larger than all mankind.
I agree that this picture alone is all that's needed to do the piece justice. I listen to this every day. The effect it has on me is beyond description.
This one has always been, by far, my favorite rendition. The chorus is so powerful and booming. God, it's amazing! And, to me, it's practically flawless.
I saw the performance of it at the San Francisco War Memorial opera last month, and the lyrics and the performance of it I felt only improved the power of the music. Really glad I went.
This is wonderful. Whether it was intentional or not, the way you combine this perfect music with a video of ... one picture of Wagner, is perfect. No video can portray this music's depth and as is so often the case with Wagner the music is far better than anything we can visually add through acting. I'd love to know how Wagner perceived his own music since it was composed for Opera. I prefer to listen rather than see the performance.
By eliminating the visual element of opera you miss a huge part of the experience - one that Wagner specifically wanted to be a total art/music/drama expression. I agree the music is sublime on its own but nothing beats experiencing the opera as it was meant to be.
Solti, Paris version, in the beginning you're hearing Victor Braun and Helga Dernesch

You are righr frknGeraniaceae! Wrong post. This is Bryn Terfel. I don't know how I got it so wrong.

Is this the Dresden version or the Paris version???? Gotta get an recording like this one!
frknGeraniaceae 1 year ago
This is the "Chor und Orchester der Staatsoper Berlin" conducted by Franz Konwitschny (You don't know him).
We recognize the voices of Elisabeth Grümmer and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau.
Recorded 1961 I believe.
The Wall was still there.

The older pilgrims returning from Rome are singing this (This first part sung offstage and repeated later):
Beglückt darf nun dich, o Heimat, ich schauen
und grüssen froh deine lieblichen Auen;
nun lass ich ruhn den Wanderstab,
weil Gott getreu ich gepilgert hab!
"Blest, I may now look on thee, oh, my native land,
and gladly greet thy pleasant pastures;
now I lay my pilgrim's staff aside to rest,
because, faithful to God, I have completed my pilgrimage! "

Elisabeth and Wolfram are looking for Tannhäuser among them (he left with them in Act II):
Elisabeth:
Dies ist ihr Sang! Sie sind's! Sie kehren heim!
Ihr Heil'gen, zeigt mir jetzt mein Amt,
dass ich mit Würde es erfülle!
"That is their song! It is they! They are returning home!
You saints in heaven, show me now my task,
that I may fulfil it worthily!"
NosHabebitHumus 2 years ago 6
Wolfram:
"It is the pilgrims. - It is the pious lay
that tells of the salvation of pardon received!
Oh heaven, strengthen now her heart
to meet the crucial moment of her life!"
NosHabebitHumus 2 years ago 5
Finally, the pilgrims all come on stage and sing this (first part):
Durch Sühn' und Buss' hab' ich versöhnt
den Herren, dem mein Herze fröhnt,
der meine Reu' mit Segen krönt,
den Herren, dem mein Lied ertönt!
"Through penance and repentance I have propitiated
the Lord, Whom my heart serves,
Who crowns my repentance with blessing,"
